Time for a new iPad (replacing 2017 10.5 inch Pro)?

Well, I’m thinking it’s necessary to make an upgrade. I had to make this thread on the phone because the iPad is barely registering any of my touches. I’ve tried the trick of simply turning Touch Accomodations on, and it worked in the past, but no more. My 1st gen Apple Pencil still registers as connected but does not work at all. The battery is obviously going out and is very wonky (it gets stuck forever on certain percentages like 54%, 39% then will all of a sudden die. Sometimes rebooting it it will gain 20% or more battery).

Frankly, it just sounds like the end of the line considering the heavy use it gets. In addition to the music, it’s basically my laptop/portal to the internet.

Will the new Pro models work with a headphone adapter and my Apogee One Lightning interface and/or the Lightning Apple Camera Kit for USB MIDI simultaneously, or am I gonna have to buy a new interface as well?

I appreciate those of you who know/who’ve been through this doing some of this legwork for me. It’s all gotten so complicated.

If the rumours are true the new base model sounds like a great deal...

    https://www.macrumors.com/roundup/ipad/

Compared to the 2017 10.5 pro it would have the same ram, better cpu, same screen (minus the 120hz refresh) but probably still cap at 128gig storage like previous base models.

That link isn't to rumors, seems to be describing the current base iPad, which came out in September 2020. Performance of 8th gen iPad is very good. The screen is fine, but it's not just the refresh rate that's different on the display. The display in the base iPad isn't laminated like the display in the more expensive models, so there's a noticeable air-gap between the touch surface and the screen pixels. This article describes differences between current iPad Air and the base 8th gen iPad: https://camsecore.com/powermoves/ipad/

One difference is that the iPad 8th gen still uses 1st gen Apple Pencil, which sounds like it's actually a plus for OP.

  • I guess it depends on your budget and your feeling about refurbished units. I imagine the upcoming pro will be a leap ahead and weigh in over $1000 with 258-512 gi. The 1T... maybe $1500?

The economy of a refurbished model probably gives you a hp jack as well. Unless you spend the biggest bucks you’re still only gonna get 4 go RAM.

Interesting. I am in the same boat as regards a dying swan of a unit. Does anyone know if the iPad 8th Gen's the 'best of the rest' as regards older refurbs that still have a headphone jack/work with the 1st pencil etc.

  • edited March 2021

From what I understand the 8th gen is comparable to the Air 3 (RAM and CPU), minus the display. I'm sort of in the same boat, not a dying unit but had to give mine to my son since his was older and screen cracked.

Trying to decide between Air 4 and 8th gen, but also kind of doing nothing cause it seems like maybe sooner than later there will be a newer tier low model? Maybe. I don't know...

Oh but ive gotta get a Pro. Might as well get the fastest available because I’m gonna use it til it dies.

Was really wondering about if theres a lighting to usb c adapter for my interface, and if theres a dongle that will alow me to plug in headphones to use along with MIDI (this also using a lightning to USB C dongle, unless theres a new CCK).

I know I could go cheap, but for some reason my brain won’t allow me, even though this way is gonna be more complicated.

  • @oat_phipps new iPad means new interfaces if you're going to go pro. You can get adapters, but I don't think the older Apogee interfaces will work with the new pros. I'd check with Apogee, but I have a feeling you're not going to be able to drag it along with you.

Damn, thanks, this was what I needed to know and had hoped to avoid. Oh well, I guess I’ve got an excuse to get a stereo interface now.

Looks like a full day of shopping and major credit card bill to pay off next month. Better ask the cannery for some overtime.

    That link does have rumours.

They always put the current spec at the top and rumours at the bottom. It clearly states...

    “What's Next for the iPad
Apple is working on a ninth-generation low-cost iPad with a 10.5-inch display and an A13 chip, which is set to be released in spring 2021. The tablet is also rumored to include 4GB RAM and it is said to feature a thinner, lighter design with a Touch ID Home button and Lightning port.

Mac Otakara believes the upcoming ninth-generation iPad will be similar in design to the third-generation iPad Air released in 2019. The display size is expected to remain the same at 10.2 inches, but it will be "significantly thinner" at 6.3mm. The current eighth-generation iPad is 7.5mm thick, so a 6.3mm chassis would mark a significant design change. It is also expected to be lighter at 460 grams vs. the current 490 gram weight.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman believes that Apple plans to refresh the entry-level iPad "with a thinner and lighter design later this year."

  • I went from an Air2 to Air4 last year and it changed my whole game. I finally could concentrate just on what I was making and not thinking about overworking things and freeze ups etc. no complaints

Thanks. I read way down that page, but didn't get down to the "What's Next" part.

Welp, bought a 12.9 Pro, new pencil, case, new interface, and for good measure, a korg opsix, and a fresh new pair of 7506s. Why the hell not.

    Glad I’m not married.

I've been married (twice) and single, and in general married is better. But nothing is worse than being married to the wrong person.

  • @oat_phipps, congrats, you’ll be a happy man. Curious, tho, why you didn’t want to wait for the new release?

Amazing. Completely off-topic, but showing real life. There's no better forum in the (internet)world!

  • @oat_phipps i hope that iPad does not disappoint, like some mail order brides tend to do. My last one kept freezing up.

My old one was literally unusable. Touchscreen would only register like 1 out of every 10 tap. Pencil no longer worked at all. Plus, the battery was awful.

Can't be waitin when it's honestly something essential to me.

  • I still own the 2019 10.5 iPad Pro it has a bit of a hiccup in the screen, sometimes it’s hard to press other times it shoots across the screen. I have worked it dawn to dusk never turning it off and still works. I have a few audio kit units like the synth one, D1, Digitalism, and more. But I needed the better graphics card and bit more ram so got the new iPad Pro 11in. I’ve had it for a few months and using the same units mentioned and hasn’t given me one problem at all. Except for the new usb c connection, I had to get a new hub. It’s hard to hear y’all are having issue with their products and sure they are working on any issues you’ve brought up diligently. it’s not only their commitments to music and their products but to the kids and people that get help form the sales that drive them to do what they do.I’m not a professional in anyway but I do know quality, not just products but people as well and these people give it their all and then some. Sorry to ramble on, this was my 2 cents on the issue.

  • I’ve still got a 10.5 pro that’s still working perfectly well with no reason to replace it any time soon.

However, I was gifted an iPad mini 5 recently... it’s being used as a drone display, but I’ve loaded up a few audio/video/graphic apps on it too.

I’ve been surprised how well it holds its own against the 10.5 pro, and if you compare specs... it’s not a huge difference. Headphone port and home button too.

I prefer the larger 10.5 screen, but generally the performance seems comparable. Surprisingly so.

  • The current Air is killer, apart from the lack of FaceID, which I love when the iPad is “docked.”

But I wouldn’t be buying any iPad right now. Not with new models being announced any time now. And FWIW, my 2018 Pro is still more than capable. I use it for everything — photos, music, work, watching movies. Any new Pro would have to be seriously good to prompt an update.

Yeah that’s the thing. Plus I can’t stand living with someone else. Just can’t do it. I do lament not being able to care for/and have someone care for me when I get older, but who’s to say it’d work out til then.

  • @oat_phipps rumora say announcement soon, but they also say no ipad pro until later in the year. i’d give it until the end of april to be sure, but if you already got one, it’s still great!

  • Yeah I said f it. I like it. It's big, though.
