It’s been 40 years since the release of the second best British gangster film ever

... and almost as long since someone did this storming vintage-synth cover of it’s theme:

What was the best British gangster movie? (and theme)

Need you ask?

  • I would have said “The Ladykillers”, but these are good too.

  • Sexy Beast?

Two classic films, two brilliant theme tunes & soundtracks...they don’t make em like that any more.

I’d have to say The Ladykillers isn’t exactly a gangster film, more darkly comic Ealing example!(still a bit of a classic)

  • Another superb British gangster film with Michael Caine is Mona Lisa, also starring the amazing Bob Hoskins. It’s from 1986 so I thought that’s the one you meant. Isn’t Get Carter from 50 years ago?

@JeffChasteen : Number 3, obvs. :) And yes @Wrlds2ndBstGeoshredr , The Ladykillers is pretty damn good too. Then there’s The Hit, with Terence Stamp, John Hurt and Tim Roth. And somewhere in the Top 10, Gangster No. 1. Though not above Villain, with Richard Burton as a gay gangster. Or Performance with Mick Jagger starring, as, er, gender fluid, inventing Nick Cave’s current look, and doing Memo From Turner, With Ray Cooder on slide guitar, no less.

Though none of the above are especially noted for their theme tunes as well as their stories, as I recall.

@JoyceRoadStudios: Get Carter was released in 1971. And it will be a long, cold day in Hell before anything tops it, it’s dark, dark story, and it’s fantastic score. The real Gangster No. 1.

    Goodnight, Eric! :)

    The Long Good Friday

    Stormy Monday

More Mike Hodges: The Croupier, I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead (a kind of Get Carter redux)

    i’ll second that

  • Performance would be my choice for best, though even I’ll admit the seventies psychedelic bit seems much these days

Can't beat the Human League's version of Get Carter, off the Dare album. All done on a Casio VL-tone!

  • Would I come after you with my fingers?

  • Excellent!

By the way, I reviewed The Long Good Friday last december (like and subscribe, if you want):

  • Lock Stock and 2 Loaded Barrels.

  • Snatch would be my #1 “ya tick lump”
