ipad
I'm considering getting an ipad but i don't want to spend over $1000 but i want one that is capable. What would you suggest?

The standard iPad, whatever they call it in 2021. My 2018 iPad is still quite capable, plus it works with the Apple Pencil, which is great for writing with goodnotes or any other app like that. I don’t use it as the center of my music making, but I haven’t run into anything that has caused it to seize up.
Also can I get by with a 4 or do I need a 5? i'm going to buy refurnished
would i be happy with a mini?
Depends on how good your eyes are. I would love a mini for the size, but my eyes are too old.
The mini and the pro are both due for a refresh soon. I'm beginning to suspect it may not happen before June (WWDC is early June). But the rumors say that at least the Pro is this month. Even if you don't want to buy a new model, the release of new models will push down the price of refurbs and the sale of older models from the big retailers.
Every iPad out today and the last generation is much more powerful than the one I develop and test on. They are all capable. I think the current Airs hit a good performance/feature/cost balance for audio work. They are kinda the sweet spot right now.
If you can get to an Apple store, check out the Mini in person. It might be perfect for you. It might feel really cramped and too small to see.
Regular iPad 128GB doesn't have so high price tag. It can be less than half thousand dollars (up to the local taxes). And it's powerful and fresh. Mini can be an secondary device, not the first and main.
doing some looking around I see their is the 3,4,5, and 6 like the 3 and 4 both have dual processors but once you step up to the 5 that is where the quad processor comes into play so I wonder how much difference their would be. I do know when it comes to buying apps, certain apps will only allow certain ios software and if they stop supporting the 3/4 then I will not be able to update which may not measure up the the app developers requirements. So that is a concern. was thinking the ipay mini or would the mini be too small. Is it possible to hook up wired headphones to these devices, lik a work around of a sort?
Also what audio interface do you guys use? now I have a PC which i use my novation ipad will i be able to use this with the same way like for instance I can use it to launch clips and I can also use it to play like a keyboard/midi controller, can i use it the same way without any limitations?
The ipad4 is too old for a purchase.
@jdolecek49 What's your budget? This is a starting point to the discussion.
Also, wait a couple of weeks, there’s new ones about to be announced and when that happens they often drop the price on the older models.
I picked up 128gb 2020 iPad for $350 dollars in October with a deal through my credit card. There are some pretty good deals out there.
yea man I will totally check it out thats a good budget price...at this point im not sure what apps to get...right now i have been playing with beathawk i dig the sounds but not sure if its the one for me...for recording do you prefer betmaker type workflow or like a full fledged daw like auria?
What about the Air4? They can do pretty much anything.

Competely agree. Air4 256GB, $749.
Meets both criteria: less than 1k bucks, and this is the most capable ipad for music production in the current lineup.
I mostly use AUM for putting things together and then record into Cubasis 3. BeatMaker 3 workflow for me always has me manual reading, but only because it’s a pretty deep app.
