Also their molten drum app is $0.99/€0.89
Is Arctic Keys of any use if I already got the ProSynth?
I grabbed Molten and Arctic Keys. The presets are much different than ProSynth and the app is universal. For 99 cents sure, but I didn't want it for 5.
Molten I don't even understand right now. How do I change sounds!? Haha.
This is a strange move. So arctic keys app's price drops to 99c and they release arctic keys pro which looks to me like an update to the original synth rather than a new synth. What's going on red dog? With impc pro coming out I have a feeling this is gonna become a new trend to maximize profit. I just hope that in a few years time we won't be going: 'remember those times when ios apps were dirt cheap?' I hope not. Saying that at least red dog had enough decency to keep the introductory prices low.
Arctic Pro is not new and this isn't an introductory price. It came out over half a year ago. And impc is not the first to do the new app instead of update thing. Arctic Pro and Galileo (Organ+) come to mind. But it seems reasonable to me. Free updates for life seems a bit unreasonable of a demand. IAP for new stuff in an old app also seems reasonable. I skipped Arctic Pro when it came out, but for $2 I'll check it out for the vocoder.
I listened to some of the preset sounds for Arctic Keys. While the price is tempting, these are not the droids I am looking for.
According to PalmSounds, those prices are for today only to celebrate the 8th birthday of his site.
@Zymos - Thanks! Glad that I saw the tip off on this sale last night then!
@MrNezumi - Yep, all of that is right. If you do a search on these forums, you'll find a number of threads talking about it (and people confusing it with Arctic Keys back then as well). Arctic ProSynth is iPad only, and it's a redesigned app, though it shares visual similarities with Arctic Keys. Both of them, however, are sufficiently updated to support AudioBus, Virtual MIDI (I think), and most of the baseline functionality that the legit synths of the last year-and-a-half tend to have.
Sales like this are why I haven't bought apps like Magellan or DrumPerfect yet, even though I'd probably get more enjoyment out of those than many of the cheaper apps I have. I bought Arctic ProSynth at $9.99, and I can't call it disappointing, but I did have a "why did you do that?" feeling a little after playing around with it. I can't say there's anything specifically wrong with it, it's just that it feels a lot like Sunrizer to me except with a lot less hype and about 1/8 the amount of user-generated preset banks. I don't get the sense that a ton of people own it or talk about it, if for no other reason that it feels superseded a bit by some similarly-priced competitors that are excellent.
But for less than $5 total to own ProSynth, Keys, and Molten Drum Machine? That's a great value.
^ I know that "why did you do that?" app regret feeling!
£1.49 in the UK for Arctic ProSynth. Purchased. Already had and dismissed Arctic Keys and Molten.
The good thing about having both is that there's 2 synths instead of 1. Doh! Anyway, the synth sounds good even if comparison with sunrizer definitely is right. Keen to try the vocoder even though I already have one and don't use it that much. Only pity it doesn't show in the fx slot to vocodize drums etc. Don't get me wrong @MrNezumi I'm very happy with my purchase at this price but had I bought it at the full price I'd be expecting a few updates over the yars which I just checked was the case with arctic so I'll shut up. This can't unfortunately be said about impc though.
Correction. I've tried arctic original and have to say that despite all the updates it still is a click fest when used in arp and seq mode. Filter closed, even with amp attack slightly raised, click, click, click. I also withdraw the comparison with Sunrizer which is very respectable in every way. By the way arctic pro doesn't have the clicking which in fact makes it the update that never was.
Does Arctic Keys work with virtual MIDI? It looks like it should,but following the same steps that work with other apps and with background audio on, no go.
Come to think of it - I had trouble with Arctic ProSynth on iPad with Virtual MIDI also. I follow all the same steps I would do with Magellan, Sunrizer, Cassini, whatever...but I can't recall if I ever got it to work with MIDI controllers, like Chord PolyPad or Synthecaster.
Has anyone else?
There's a graphical bug in Arctic Keys. If you choose a present from X-Y screen, when loaded the screen is not centered and you can see a half column of buttons on the left side.
Minor issue since it comes back to normality chosen another screen.
Just played with arctic keys for a while on my lunch break. Pretty happy with the sounds. Very gruff, very thick. Maybe too thick for a mix but we'll see. The sequencer is very cool though I don't fully get it yet and had trouble getting a track to control amp release. Can be used for notes but I'm more thinking of it like the iSEM sequencer - a way to vary sounds over time. Some of the controls layout choices seem weird to me at this point (osc mix should be on the osc page, right?).
Want to play this weekend with Xynthesizer->iSem synced to MIDISequencer->arctic keys and see what happens (other than my iPad 3 telling me to fuck off every 10 minutes).
That sound like a wicked idea @Syrupcore (not that part where your machine swears at ya)
@syrupcore - LOL'ed at the iPad3 telling you to eff off comment. As I sit across the table from my iPad2 still smoking after 45 minutes of intense virtual MIDI action. (Kidding, sort of).
@supadom not sure if you know but adding the asterisks around a username to bold it prevents notifications for some reason.
No reduction in price showing in the Aussie store!
Back to normal price today @mach5
Experiencing no sound problems with arctic not-so-pro synth. I tried changing preset, initializing, eventually got the sound back by reinstalling. Unfortunately this has happen again. Here's the screenshot, see the preset window
@supadom
I'm getting this too, intermittently. Mostly in and around attempts to run it in IAA. I have been successful using it in AB...
I've never tried it with iaa but had it with AB which makes ASP the culprit.
@supadom & @Littlewoodg - that happened to me too! There was no way to correct it. I was not on IAA but possibly on AB. It's a very glitchy app.
My IAA troubles are in MTS. IAA is cool in BM2. AB is cool in both. The midi set up wants to be "Input: any port" then clock from host app...
I finally found a way to slave xynthesizr and the rest or them synths clock to bm2. Both clock out and midi out need to be on and then just virtual out. Once you get other apps to listen to virtual ports it's all done, like a clockwork. It feels unreal to have several apps starting and stopping together like that. Of course bm2 needs to be at the beginning of a bar otherwise it will sound off.
It seems counterintuitive, when you see ports named for the specific apps you are trying control, to have to select the generic virtual one, but that does seem to be the only way to get certain apps to communicate.
@Zymos
Yes weird. It's a truism that iOS midi across apps is whack. Some of it is workable with extra apps active but that's a bummer too, AB plus MidiBridge, Fre Ewi, then whatever you are actually producing with, fx, synth, DAW. Device gets busy and I'm all fiddly. I have/had given up on a few synths for this very reason, pretty good ones too including this one. Glad that I tried again and found a route into MTS along with BM2. The sale got me interested in reinstalling what I'd bought at full price a while ago. I don't mind having paid full, it's cool, and different enough from others.
