How is MIDI on iOS14? - April 2021
I'm super interested in the Atom2 with Launchpad functionality, but believe this will require iOS 14.
I rely heavily on my MIDI apps for music and have resisted the switch to 14 with reports of MIDI issues for this iOS.
How are things at this point. (April 2021)?
My main MIDI apps are MIDIFire MIDI Designer2 along with all the usual & favourite sequencers, Xequence2, Poly2, Fugue Machine etc.
Thanks in advance for any insight, cheers.

Like what issues .. ?
I'm not having/using the mentioned apps but so far so good.
Actually I don't see what could go wrong with MIDI, there maybe software limitation/bugs, but AFAIK, not in relation with iOS 14, now I don't have iOS 13 anymore on any of my devices, so it would be hard for me to test something.
Atom and Launchpad work on iOS 13, btw. You just need to run a Mozaic script at the start of your session . It sets the Launchpad to the needed mode.
I’d look into whether or not those older apps the you “heavily rely on” have been updated for iOS 14?
I’ve experienced no issues with the iOS update so far, but you should check with each of your app developers first.
I have had zero issues with the upgrade to 14, and can’t ever think of an upgrade that had an impact on MIDI
Just to mention, iOS 14 changes the way MIDI events are queued, possibly in anticipation of support for MIDI 2.0. This was discussed back in October after iOS 14 came out, and some devs of sequencers, etc. needed to revise their apps for compatibility. So it is a realistic concern, though you'd think any current apps would be updated by now, if necessary.
Thanks for all the feedback guys.
Especially @uncledave for clarification on the potential issue.
And @espiegel123 for mentioning the Mozaic script. Are you able to point me in the right direction to read more on that?
Cheers

@SpookyZoo - the main remaining annoyance with iOS 14 is the infamous "Disappearing AUv3 Apps". For many people, at seemingly random times, some database of AUv3 apps gets corrupted and it appears as if all your AUv3 apps have disappeared. A reboot of the device is needed to get them back. Some people see it more often than others. As far as I know, Apple hasn't indicated wether a fix is on the way or when.
Other than that, I haven't heard of people reporting any MIDI issues or remaining apps that aren't working with iOS 14.
I'm holding off as I see no reason whatever to update until they fix the AUv3 apps issue, but will update at that point to stay current.
One MIDI issue not yet fixed is the special SysEx message the StreamByter Controls GUI panel sends to tell the script that a change has occurred. This message fails to arrive, making the Controls marginally useless. It works perfectly on my iPad Air running iOS 12.5.2, but not on iPad 6 with iPadOS 14.4.2. This is just one example of an app attempting to queue a MIDI message and failing.
good to know. That's all new information for me. Up until now I was unaware of any MIDI issues at all.
Yikes. That's a biggie for me. Thanks for the heads up!
Thanks also, @espiegel123 & @wim
Found the prior discussion on MIDI that I mentioned: https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/42366/calling-developers-anyone-else-notice-some-fundamental-core-midi-changes-in-ios-14
It's kind of written in devspeak, but it does indicate there are some new complications for apps that create MIDI events. I'd guess that currently maintained apps are updated by now; not so sure about older ones though.
Looks an interesting read. Cheers!
Right. I guess I was napping when reading your list. Of course MIDIFire and StreamByter are joined at the hip. So you could be impacted there. You should query Nic on his forum, https://audeonic.boards.net/. I don't know if it's a new system limitation, or just needs some dev effort...
Your example I imagine would be limited to StreamByter AUv3 if the issue is isolated to the GUI sysex.
I do most of my work with MIDIFire, that doesn't use that GUI, but I often like to see if that translates over to a modular setup in AUM. So I wouldn't be keen to not have that option.
Think I'll be looking into the iOS 13 workaround that Ed posted first.
Thanks again for the heads up.
