Are you buying less apps these days?

Just wondering - there seems to have been fewer releases recently - but aside from that I have found myself thinking twice now before spending money on buying another new app. (despite the still relatively inexpensive outlay). This will obviously be aimed at those who have been at it for a few years.
I think I might have previously been purchasing without fully working out whether or not I really wanted the app, just to have it in the arsenal. But I have bought a fair few apps recently where I have had next to no no use out of them at all.
I think I may have been going along with the ‘instabuy!’ this app is amazing!’ hype and diving in too quickly at times. Also anything up to (just less 🤔 than) a tenner seemed to not require a second thought - I don’t do this near as much these days even though it still thankfully wouldn’t be a hit on my finances.
When it comes down to it I have a hardcore of about a dozen go to apps that are enhanced by the occasional use of about a dozen others - and that seldom changes.
Maybe I am too impatient with learning the full functionality and potential of some of them.
For some reason I have an inbuilt reluctance to buying an app and requesting a refund if I don’t like it.
I’m all for supporting the developers as well when possible.. but there has to be some sort of limit to this I suppose.
Maybe I am just getting more miserable as I get older - that could be it 🤨
Maybe I should get Drambo ....... and maybe I shouldn’t have said that 😃

At the same time.... there are a few around the corner that I know I will definitely be buying as soon as they come out 😛

  • @Lady_App_titude shared her "best practice" to limit excess purchasing. She can only buy a new app after she produces a project with the one purchased most recently.

She makes highly quality works and this really slows her spend down. She also uses tools she purchased a decade ago because she invested so much effort into mastering them.

So, she also doesn't waste too much time here getting inundated with the "new toy" chatter.
Lately, she's contributed a lot of visual art for our entertainment. But we could all do well
to take her advice on how many apps to buy and what to do when you do get one.

What a very sensible app roach! But, sadly, I must decline. Buying apps keeps my GAS at bay. :D

  • This year I'm currently at 620SEK(9 APPS, 3 IAPS) which at current exchange rate is around $70 USD.
I've become a lot more picky and avoid 'impulse purchases' and check if I already have something in the same ball-park.

So to answer the the topic, YES a LOT less than what I used to do!

  • Yea definitely, I‘m thinking twice before I buy anything. Main reason being that I kind of have everything at this point.

Can’t help myself with some devs though. Somehow each new Bleass app brings something totally new on the table

Is that your admin work or there is an easy way to check, compare annually? Possibly without iTunes/desktop.

On topic: yes, I think I’m covered. It’s rare that something original comes up...

Ditto, BLEASS gets me every time! 😂

Oh, and Bram Bos, Toneboosters, and Eventide too... I almost feel obligated because their apps are so good.

I save all the iTunes receipts in my mailbox in an Apple folder.
So it's relatively easy to go thru the mails for this year and sum up the bills.
The remaining store-credits (~$150) should be good until end of August or something like that.

I'm still on an iPad Air 2 and depending on what happens at WWDC'21 I'll probably get a new one when iPadOS15 launches later this year. I want my 3.5mm so either the current iPad 8 with 128GB will have to do or a new 'iPad 9' if still it has the jack...

So yeah, it's a bit of 'admin work' but it's good to keep an eye on the expenses...

  • I’m not buying less apps but through experience I’ve grown a “taste” and I’m more picky.

For example I would have bought yet another Eventide app because of all the praising and hype. But I’ve realized I just don’t like the sound. To me they sound like my 90’s budget zoom multi effects pedal.
I’ve also almost stopped buying synths. I have too many and I’m not versed enough to take advantage of them. I’ll rethink that if I ever get IVCS3 to output a G note when I play a G.

  • Definitely. Starting to buying according to a goal, which I have in my creations. "Sounds nice" is not enough :)

Yeah, there's a "flavor of the month" bandwagon thing that happens here we all need to be wary of.

Also anything up to (just less 🤔 than) a tenner seemed to not require a second thought...

I'm a cheapskate clinging on to the early days of iOS music apps, so my threshold is a fiver. 😛

But to answer your question, yes, I've been buying less apps for years now due to reasons like: already having a lot of them. prices going up, cheaper desktop plugins, expensive iPad storage, no discounted iTunes gift cards, etc.

That said, there are a number of apps on sale at the moment which are quite attractive. o:) GAS is real. >:)

I’m over the Eventides. I feel like they should’ve combined them all into one app.
Most of them do reverb, delay, modulations etc.
They all need a Randomizer button.
Also, they clutter the AuV3 list, because they take double the space since they got midi input versions and the only midi control they gave us is for the ribbon 😠

  • I didn’t think I would buy another synth app but when the sales happen or Black Friday, it’s a bit difficult to resist. I love what a lot of devs do and don’t feel bad with buying there apps if I use them or not. I cant resist a novel sequencer!

Universal apps used to get me to buy without thinking due to the devs effort but I’m not buying everything universal anymore.

I know this is controversial but I kind of understand the subscription model. I don’t have any subs apps and subs apps make me triple think a purchase but I’m slowly coming round to the idea. My reason would be good apps that are indispensable will be rewarded.

I’m thinking of of Kymatica, Audiobus, beepstreet, Elliot garage, brambos. Surely these guys deserve to be able to give up there day jobs!

Cats and pigeons, I promise I’m not intending to troll and apologies if I am :#

  • It doesn’t matter how good an app is. The day it goes subscription is the day it stops getting updated on my iPad. Never subscription, under any circumstance.

  • Buying a lot less apps myself these days too. A combination of a lot less coming out lately, getting pickier about that kinds of apps I want to use, and just generally being very pleased with the few apps I do use a lot.

  • I’m definitely buying less, because A. I have everything I need and everything I want atm. B.There hasn’t been anything new that’s doing something I can’t pretty already do. And C. I’m still on 13.7 with no plans on updating to 14 anytime soon and if an app requires 14 then I can’t buy it. Also I’m doing more on my MacBook Pro and less on my IPad and buying more hardware.

  • I’ve been buying apps from the developers who hang out here, but outside of that it’s been kinda a slower year for synths, which is my true addiction 😎 however i have picked up most of the new ones.
Hoping to see some great tools and instruments this year.

  • I have also stopped buying apps.

    Oops!!!
    Just bought ShockWave.

  • I spent about 12$ the past six months on iOS since getting Maschine. My music hobby spending is pretty much nothing now.

  • edited April 2021

If there is Max/Msp or its equivalent on iOS, having it would stop me from buying new audio effects for a very long time.

  • edited April 2021

when I looked at my arsenal and realized NanoStudio 2, Beatmaker 3, and Drambo had yet to be really fully explored, I figured it was time to hit pause on purchases. IAPs for already purchased stuff is ok. Just got the NS2 full collection of sounds. Spent the past year or so jamming with synths into blocs wave and recording performances straight to AudioShare and finally wanted more editing power, realized I had all I needed for that already. Blocs Wave is just too fun

I’m in line with your second sentence.

  • Since I can’t go to the pub I just ask myself if I deserve a pint, or 2 or 3, or 7 (drum computer). The answer is pretty much always yes, no regrets and no hangover.

  • edited April 2021

Since Drambo and Atom 2, seems that we have everything we need.

    Aum + Drambo + Atom 2 + HQ synths + HQ effects.

Audulus and MiRack on other screen

    We don't need more.

  • I have no qualms buying apps from dev I want to support, even if I will never use the app.
Most of my app purchases are ones that have more hardware integration and have midi feedback - you know..the bane of hardware/midi implementation on iOS.

I probably should just learn mozaic/streambyter for most of that, but like building controllers, I end up spending more time doing that that making tunes.

Theres even a couple ideas I have to build apps that I know are an immediate use or need for the community, but I dread actually making and releasing them. I see how with bug reports, feature requests that usually go outside of the scope of the devs vision, user end support, etc gives me cold feet. This becomes even worse if its hardware/DIY builds of stuff. I just don't have the coding skills to support them properly past personal usage.

So to that I give you devs props. The endless support that follows birthing an app into the world. It doesnt end when the app is done. Recently I tried to give a developer of another site a "thank you" in his tip jar for a tool I use on a daily basis and was refused. Classy but annoying (harumph). But you all do it with a smile.

So no, I don't really stop buying apps if I want that dev to keep going.
I also have all my devices in an MDM, so I use apples VPP program for app purchases, so most of my apps are purchased 5 times. (yeah....bundles like toneboosters, , eventide, etc got expensive.......)

    <\rant>

  • The only thing I'd really purchase anymore are Beathawk IAPs, Toneboosters apps, a Melodyne styled app, and audio tracks IAP for Nanostudio 2. I no longer have GAS like I used to back in 2015/2016.

  • It’s definitely easier to spend money on gear/apps than to spend time and effort to become better musicians/producers. I’d risk saying that most of us have more than enough tools already. Perhaps it’s iOS music making modularity that pushes us to get that one app that is the missing piece in our workflow. And another one... These days I focus on guitar practice and spend less time overthinking and optimising my setup. With that said I’m waiting for Loopy Pro :D

I buy whatever apps strike my fancy, they’re like popcorn I keep munching on if it suits my taste. Not concerned about using all of the apps I’ve purchased. That being said, it’s more difficult to buy new apps if they don’t seem to offer significant new functionality. My threshold for what qualifies as significant is often low.

    App Acquisition Saturation Zones
    1. DAWs
    2. Traditional instruments (e.g. violins, trumpets, saxophones)
    3. Electric Pianos
    4. Guitar effects
    5. Reverbs
    6. Loopers except Michael’s forth coming looper app.
    7. Synths
    8. Vocoders
    9. Custom MIDI controller construction
    10. Drums
    11. Trackers
    12. Basic Effects EQ, compressor, flanger, phaser, tremolo, distortion, bit crusher

There are several new apps in the pipeline that I will be buying.

Take My Money Old App to New App
    1. AU BitWiz
    2. AU Sector
    3. AU Wilsonic with MIDI output
    4. AU nanoloop
    5. AU Caustic
    6. AU Earhoof
    7. AU ChordMaps
    8. AU Pepp
    9. AU Monovista
