Atom, Xequence, Nanostudio

I'm considering getting NS2 again and wondering about your thoughts on this type of sequencing workflow used with AUM/ApeMatrix/Drambo etc.
How do these three sequencers compare personally these days in terms of workflow smoothness and the extent of musical stuff you can do?

NanoStudio is smoothest sequencer IMO. The workflow in NS2 is well thought out and makes it easy to get started and get something going. It is also the most stable music production app in the App Store. It’s a must buy.

Xequence would be amazing as an AUV3... Could you imagine one instance of Xequence controlling multiple AUV3 instruments? I know that kind of defeats the purpose of AUV3, but I dream of a MIDI AUV3 that can output MIDI to multiple plugins in one instance. That would be a true MIDI sequencing experience.

Atom 2 is fantastic! Truly a modular sequencer that is only limited by your imagination. @blueveek is one the best developers, values user feedback, and consistently updates Atom. It’s a must buy.

If your music involves meter or tempo changes, only NS2 handles those (among the apps you listed)

  • Atom 2 doesn’t do tempo change?

Atom2 follows the host’s tempo, and adjusts for tempo changes in real time.

    Here’s a quick example...

  • Just to clarify, (both the original question but then also replies). Are you folks using NS2 to sequence other apps (in AUM or wherever?). I love NS2, probably my favorite all around top to bottom app on iOS but to me it’s basically a DAW. I’ll use AUV3 within NS2 but nothing modular going on - now wondering if I’m missing something?

PS, I’ll give the obligatory “NS2 needs audio track capabilities and it would be the perfect DAW on iOS, hopefully NS3 arrives soonish or they finally implement audio”. 😎

  • I use NS2 as a host, but haven’t used it with AUM yet.

Yeah, more I thought about it, pretty sure wow were all saying same thing, I don’t know why I got the impression you guys were referring to it with AUM

Atom follows the host tempo. It doesn’t have embedded tempo change (that is really a host function). So, it needs a host that provides tempo change if tempo change is integral to the workflow.

Very few hosts on iOS provide tempo change and/or meter changes.

  • NS2 works inside Audiobus.

But Atom2 does have a tempo multiplier so with different patterns in a sequence you can achieve time signature changes. Without needing the host to provide tempo change.

LK and Beathawk are midi auv3 that can output midi to multiple plugins in one instance 😊

    Good point, thank you!

Thank you all! I'm sticking to Atom for now. But wouldn't it be amazing if Atom would take some cues from the smooth NS2 scroll handle editing experience at some point... The tempo change is good to have but not detrimental yet, though I do hope for an app that can mess with the midi clock in interesting ways.
