iPad 6th Generation + LATEST iOS?

I am on 12.4.1 but realize I need the latest to get Beat Cutter.

Do I have any concerns or issues before updating the iPad that anyone can warn me about?

I have made the update plunge years prior to be heartbroken after due to unintended consequences.

Thanks y'all.

  • My iPad 6 is on the current iPadOS 14.4.2. I have two known problems:

    • Sometimes all installed AUv3 disappear. A power-off restart is required to bring them back. I've only seen this twice, but it's a regular annoyance for some users. I restart fairly often (at least weekly), so that may be protecting me. Apple should fix that sometime.
    • When StreamByter is used as AUv3, the special MIDI SysEx message it uses to report changes on its GUI control panel no longer works. This is pretty arcane, and requires an update by the dev.

To summarize, it works fine. You'll have a few new experiences coming from iOS 12, since you skipped iPadOS 13.

  • @RUST( i )K I strongly suggest staying on 12. My Air2 is worse in 13 and on 14 (which I avoid) there is stiil a problem with AU icons
If you plan to update , you could try at least saving some heavy seasons ,pushing your ipad to the limits and then try the same seasons on 14.

I never thought about this before but I shutdown my iPad every night going to bed. Maybe that why I have less problems then others. 🧐

Uh oh....which apps do you use? What host? Any particular set up with hardware/midi controllers?

AB3, AUM mostly AU synths/FX and IAA apps such as Soft/Funk drummer ,iBassist ,ElasticDrums/FX
Nothing special on hardware side ...
Best way to test performance is finding someone on iOS 14 with the same ipad and share a season with the same buffer size

  • Fwiw, Auria pro doesn't work with Audiobus in iOS 14 and StreamByter's internal sysex for slider/knob interactions doesn't work correctly in iOS 14.

What is the usefulness of using Auria with Audiobus?

Many. One is piping multiout AUs from AUM into Audiobus since Auria doesn't handle multibus AU. Another is using IAA apps that support Audiobus state-saving.

  • There are other scenarios,too.

  • I’m on iPad 6, 14.4 haven’t gone to the new one yet 14.4.2 I think it is, but I’ve been fine with everything, everything has worked and been good for me. Only minor thing is sometimes when you download a new Au app, you just have to restart the device. Sometimes, for some reason, after a download nothing shows up in AUM, that could have been fixed in newest update not sure. Other then that though things have been quite smooth.

As that been a stable solution? Pipping audio thru so many app seems like a good way to chew thru your system ressource and get strange problem.

Yes. It has been stable and doesn't chew through system resources. The Audiobus/AUM workflow is quite efficient and flexible and well-behaved when working with well-implemented apps.

Have you used AB remote? You can control various apps with a second device. Triggering notes, Fx, or various other parameters or midi events.

Patterning Elastic Drums and Loopy are several apps that have it.

Game changer......even if it is old and many people don't know about it.

I recommend getting MIDI DESGINER PRO if you have time.

You can build anything you like.

Another thing to learn. Man !! I just want to make music 😭😭

That’s why I stay away from all things modular, mozaic or Drambo. I have enough of learning to mix/master to keep me busy for a pretty long time.
