AUDynamicsProcessor question: attack/release time when used as gate

Well this is novel, but I have an end-user-ish question for you guys 😃

I've wrapped the built-in AUDynamicsProcessor plugin in Loopy Pro:

...which is all well and good, but I can't for the life of me actually figure out why the attack and release time seems to only apply to its compression threshold, and not its expansion threshold. The result is that when it's used as a gate/expander, there's no control to be had over attack and release, and I think it feels a bit fast.

Is there a consensus on AUDynamicsProcessor and its usefulness? I know very little about audio production, and perhaps the default expansion attack and release are perfectly adequate, but if it's considered sub-par, I might chuck it out and write my own audio processing code (using the same UI on top).

This is just like finding out there are Covid variants that are not impacted by the vaccines.
There goes 2021 waiting... and no assurance for 2022 relief either.

    Coders gonna' code.

  • I always keep the attack and release values at their minimum values to avoid clicks for compression/limiting and instant gating and adjust the levels to match.

What I like is that the AUDynamics calculates the compression ratios automatically.
Ie. I can set the threshold and by how much the signal is allowed to go over it so it will never clip no matter how much gain is applied.

    Same with the expansion/gating.

I find it a very handy tool to process voice and keep the levels constant.

The level visualisation in the macOS UI makes it easy to set the levels (red indication when it’s over or under the set levels,

The expander is very efficient on cutting out background noises...

Btw. The UI looks yummy, good enough to eat :D

  • The double-digit threshold levels are tricky to adjust accurately unless typing in the values...

Haha. I didn't mean straight away!

  • Nice. Thanks @Samu! Sounds like we're a go with AUDynamicsProcessor then (thank god). We'll see how Loopy's UI fares, hopefully it'll suffice. When you get your hands on the beta, when it's time (soon), let me know.

  • @Michael I've only used the AUDynamicsProcessor in expansion mode and it has done its job quite well so far, regardless of its limited control. Since the reason for using it is to avoid hard gate mode, the ratio I'm using is rather moderate so the attack/release times aren't that critical anyway. I've even used Drambo's Graphic Shaper for immediate expansion without attack or release and it works better than expected within limits.

    Good to know.
