iOS 14.4.2 Even mid-AUM session I get the dreaded ‘no audio units installed message’

I wish I hadn’t updated to iOS 14. I’m currently on 14.4.2, ie the latest iOS

I continue to have almost daily problems of needing to restart my device. Even in the middle of AUM sessions i sometimes get the dreaded message below. Is there currently any better way to fix this than restarting? This is really bullshit.

  • I've had this just a handful of times since I installed iPadOS14 (iPad Air 2) way back when it was released...
...iPadOS14.5 is around the corner, don't know if it adds any fixes for this 'thing' though.

I honestly suspect it's got something to do with iOS/iPadOS memory management and that the 'AUv3 Cache' gets wiped out.
There's no errors at system level when this happens. The 'AUv3 Cache' is rebuilt when rebooting the device...

Don't know if developers can manually trigger re-scan of installed plug-ins.

Which iPad do you own? Model/year.

It might be worth doing some pruning and offloading apps/AU you don't use. Some people never experience this -- and al the people that have reported it happening regularly seem to have fairly large app/plug-in libraries. It would be interesting to see if doing some pruning improves things. Also daily shutdowns.

  • I've got 340 apps in total installed at the moment, not fully done with my cleanup yet...
...could probably get down to ~300 or so without missing anything.

I don’t want to prune really, Ed. I am doing daily shutdowns because I get this problem almost daily lol

Have you investigated the logs to see if there are any obvious events in the interval between when AUv3 worked and when it failed? Especially jetsam events. I've only had this twice, and both events seemed to follow a jetsam that killed the pkd daemon (and coincidentally, AppStore was using 30000 pages each time). I'd love to work with a chronic case like yours, to see if there really is a pattern.

Certainly, daily restarts seem like a way to avoid the nuisance, since it seems to take a while to build up, but obviously it can reach the breaking point quickly sometimes.

Sure. I understand that you don’t want to. But wouldn’t you like to not run into this? No guarantee that pruning will solve it, but it seems that there is a reasonable chance that it would have an impact. And there seems 0% chance it will go away on its own.

    Hi Gavinski -

may I ask how your situation with the missing AUV3 problem has evolved?

I am still on 13.7 and hesitating to make the IOS14 step ... but with all this Moog-Update and Cubasis-Performance Issues - I am also getting the feeling IOS 14 might be solving some other issues for me -

Have you found a satisfying workaround or is the issue still unpredictable and annoying?

  • No, I don’t want to offload apps, this problem happened to me three times the other day....yup, 3 times in one day. Even mid sesssion in AUM it happened, no joke. If it is related to number of apps, as Ed seemed to think, you may want to assess your risk factor. I definitely regret updating. Happily I got a marketing email from Apple today asking for my thoughts on iOS 14, and I gave them a piece of my mind 😛

    Care to share? ;)

iPadOS15 will decide wether I get a new iPad or not. I mean I'm still annoyed by the lack of 3.5mm jack and multiple ports...
...sure my iPad Air 2 is not a speed-monster but it still serves me very well :)

Imagine an iPad with 2 USB-C ports, 3,5mm jack and a slot for SD-Cards...
...now that would be a 'Pro' iPad for video-editors and other content creators and even performers...

Oh well, we'll see where things go but I'm for the most part happy with iPadOS14 on my iPad Air 2 and iPhone 8.

    Cheers!

Same here Gavin ... always happens when I'm at the peak of my musical madness too! Have I enabled some hidden Siri-critic?
I've also noticed that it's giving Firefox a hard time - especially image rendering... jams up and stops.

Haven't got much else on the ipad to test but folks with some graphic gobbling apps installed might want to check how they're doing.

In the meantime don't press that update button till you have to. They're toying with powerful arcane forces at present - optimised streaming seems the target.

We're all beta testers now. Especially app developers I reckon ... must feel like riding a tiger.

  • I'm a sucker for updates but I'll hold out on iOS 13.7 - mostly because of all those problems with AUv3. It's so disheartening to read about it. At the same time, I feel like missing out on some great new apps. I was going to upgrade to Mela 2 but it is iOS 14 only.

I love my iPad, I love the creative apps available on the app store ... Apple as a company on the other hand ...

  • I wonder if there’s a common denominator for people having these problems. I have a 2019 iPad on iOS 14.4.2 and I don’t have any of these issues at all. Strange. 🤔

People have tried to find a common denominator and there are people with the same models and iOS versions where one has the issue and the other doesn't. One suspicion has been that it is related to the number of AUv3s installed though it hasn't been confirmed.

  • It's only happened for me once so far, on installing 14.4.1. I was expecting to see it a bit more often.
I currently have 905 apps installed and approx 170 are AUv3, I think counting AUs is going to be helpful.

I would share, but strangely it is not a shareable link, it was embedded in an email but somehow when I long press I don't get any copy link etc option

Mela 2 was the reason I upgraded. Its great but not worth this

  • It’s happened to me maybe 10-15 times total since I went to iOS 14, which I did pretty early on. Never during a session though. Every-time it happened, I had recently downloaded a music app. I’m still on 14.2 though.

  • @Samu , I definitely miss my Air 2 / iOs 13.7 / 3.5 jack SO MUCH ! 😭
Since I've been offered my iPad Pro 11" 512 / iPadOS 14, with the loss of Auria Pro, I've totally lost my everyday "easily take my guitar and play/record" setup 😭😩... Now I'm struggling with problems and clearly have lost a lot of fun using an iPad to make music 🙈😥.

  • I am on the same ios with ipad pro 11 and have no issue whatsoever @Gavinski

  • I’ve had it about 5 or 6 times total and I’ve been on iOS 14 since release. Yesterday I got it mid NS2 session for the first time. I can’t map it to having recently downloaded a new AUv3 as I have always recently downloaded a new AUv3.

iPad Pro 11” latest gen, 250GB available storage, 511 apps installed of which, at a guess, 250 to 300 are music apps.

IPad Air 2018, IPad OS 14.4.2, got a huge number of apps on it, nearly all music and wavs (256 gb iPad currently less than 1gb left), get this once or twice a week during AUM sessions. It’s a PITA, but since I’m only a ‘hobbyist’ and not an ‘artist’ (hat tip to @LinearLineman :) ) it doesn’t really matter, I suppose.

It does make me approach each OS update with fear and trepidation though. All of this could be avoided if Apple permitted proper local backups and roll backs, and would be worth the grief if ‘pro’ did indeed mean earphone socket, 2 usb Cs and and SD slot as per @Samu ’s excellent conception. Love the apps, love the IPad. Hate Apple’s tone deaf attitude.

As is, I think my next platform upgrade might be a Surface Pro. This guy makes a compelling argument for it:

  • @Svetlovska
1GB free space? Have you considered freeing up at least 10-20GB for ‘whatever the os needs’ in the background? Frankly I wouldn’t expect stable operation under those conditions...

  • edited April 2021

@0tolerance4silence : Sigh. Yes. This is a recurrent issue, as I generate a lot of wavs on iPad, daily, and periodically have to do a huge dump off of loops and textures and incomplete sessions for future use, or Ableton experiments. Trouble is, such backup takes ages by any method I’ve found, and I also have an increasing number of ‘zombie’ apps which I love but which have vanished from the store and therefore, because of Apples’ @#!!ing stupid, vicious and pointless removal of the old option to do local backups, means any given IPad I own gradually turns into a haunted museum of ghost apps.

  • edited April 2021

Stupid question alert... And apologies if this has been asked before.

@Gavinski - I'm guessing when you get that dreaded "no Audio Unit effects installed" message, you're also not seeing AU fx in other hosts, GarageBand for example?

  • I got this the other day. It was right after seeing this thread. A reboot fixed it but, clearly, I caught it from here.

Good question Rob, I don't really use any other hosts and don't have garageband installed, but yeah I should check on apematrix maybe
