usb as storage
Hello - My name is Franz. I just joined your nice website and forum. I'm new to all of this ios music and I'm trying to learn everything. I do have a question that I hope you can answer. How can I get all my samples and loops onto my ipad?
Comments
Before answering: what model of iPad? Does it have a Lightning connector? Or a USB-C connector?
From the title I assume your samples are on a USB drive of some sort? If not, what do you need to transfer the samples from?
Hmmm, weird, I was just about to start a thread asking for recommends on specific iOS friendly USB sticks. Uhhh, I suppose I shouldn’t hijack the thread with my specifics so will wait for OP first.
For me this just does not work. None of the audio apps I know except auditor can easily preview samples from a USB drive. And really no app can work directly with the files on a USB drive. You always have to import the files first. If your iPad has only 32 GB then you a have hard life. Probably the best option is to have the samples on a cloud storage or your own network storage aka fileshare. Then you can at least preview easily with the app Documents by Readle.
All in all it’s a nightmare. The iPadOS filesystem is the biggest pain point with music production. Read this wiki article: https://wiki.audiob.us/doku.php?id=file_storage
If you plan to use a lot of samples then better buy an iPad with a lot of storage
I’m using one of these Samsung 128gb drives in conjunction with a USB-C hub

The USB hub is really the important part IMO. Pretty much any USB thumb drive, SD card, etc will work.
It’s about the Files app. Just drag n drop.
I suppose if one wants to avoid dealing with attached media, then paying for iCloud storage might be another option. Personally, I’d rather have something like a Samsung T5 2TB SSD external hard drive attachment for fast backups.

I’ve read that the Samsung T7 is not a good choice for iPads and this was confirmed to me by someone who works at an Apple Store.
Ahh crap, serious? i just recommended that as a potential option to my dad.
Unfortunately, yes. The T7 looks faster in the specs, but it doesn’t perform better with an iPad. I’ll try to find the information on this... it may have been in several of the reviews on Amazon.
UPDATE: Found it. It’s that the T7 gets extremely hot. See the reviews in this link... https://www.amazon.com/SAMSUNG-Portable-SSD-2TB-MU-PC2T0H/dp/B0874Y5XFG/ref=sr_1_3?crid=V1LJG722X0BZ&dchild=1&keywords=samsung+t7+ssd+2tb&qid=1618090626&sprefix=samsung+t7+ssd,aps,238&sr=8-3&th=1
If it’s not one thing, it’s another! I’d stick with the T5.
It would also be used for a desktop though. In the end as long as it works and is reliable that is the priority.
The T7 gets very hot, which could be a problem as far as longevity and reliability go. There are no reports of heat issues with the T5.
Ahh ok, great that is good to know.
I have network attached storage (Synology) which means I can share files across all my devices in the house and it also takes care of backups. This gives me the ability to access files without dongles in the house anyway.
There are unfortunately still very few apps which make use of external storage, Pure Synth Platinum being one notable exception.
Speaking of samples... I love loopcloud as they provide a desktop AU that plays the loop in sync with your song and matches tempo and key. Unfortunately they do not offer an iOS AU. So, I’m using Ableton live lite on the laptop synced via Ableton Link with AUM to browse loops.
Would be so great to have something like that on the iPad.
A sample and MIDI loop browser would be very welcome. I bought the Groove Monkee full MIDI pack and I think there were over 36k MIDI files in there so it has been sitting on my network drive waiting for a better browsing solution to come along. The Sweet MIDI app comes close but I would like to see as well as hear the MIDI as in a lot of cases the pattern makes it obvious whether the file is likely to be the one I am looking for.
Just checked it out and of course at first thought ‘damn, they record all these outside?’. Looks like a sweet collection, may just have to bite for a bit!
