Took the plunge-iPad Air 4 Dummy! Solved!!

Upgrading from 1st gen 9.7 pro to iPad Air 4 256. Got the AppleCare+, free shipping/no tax and a $10 off coupon, seemed like a really good deal. Gift to myself for my birthday and for landing a job after being laid off for a year due to COVID. Did I need it? No. Will the added ram, faster chip and extra screen real estate be nice? Yes! Hope I made the right decision, not one to indulge myself and I can already feel the buyers remorse nipping at the edges of my mind.

  • Sounds like the right decision/reward/ birthday gift. You deserve the pleasure of it. Congrats on all three.🥳🥳🥳

  • I’m very very happy with my Air4 also 256, I’ve had it for a couple of months now. My only reservation was no button - but I wouldn’t want one back now. Well done 😃

@king_picadillo Im still on the 1st gen 9.7 pro and been looking at the Air 4 256. How you finding the upgrade with running bigger app sessions before the CPU chokes. Is it worth the upgrade?

Any issues with the 48Khz fixed sample rates?

Did you get a headset dongle to go with it ?

  • Good job buying apple care. I get the freezing screen on a 2nd ipad air 3. Same time. Bought in May. Bad by April. Made me wonder if its a conspiracy so you upgrade the apple care at last moment and or if apple care cost more than it costs apple to produce an ipad but it might be something else. Loads of midi control sending commands. Not sure if it would be an app as I reset and deleted all apps.

  • @Jumpercollins it’s in the mail so haven’t received it yet. I ordered 2 Apple brand dongles for my cans and when I’m in my “studio” I have a Shure portable interface with a headphone jack I’ll be using. Still pondering the Scarlett Solo interface for studio work, but don’t know if I’ll need it yet. I’ll report back once it’s in hand and i’ve tinkered with it a bit. @sigma79 Applecare seemed like a no brainer as it only $69 for the air ($129 I think for Pro so almost double). I figure $69 to get a replacement if shit gets goofy is nice piece of mind. The reviews on this and other forums for the Air specifically for production are really good so I’m encouraged.

Thats cool mate. Didnt mean to neg on your ipad. Just saying the apple care were good. You got a good ipad Id say.

  • Just did the same upgrade and couldn’t be happier. Enjoy!

  • I’ve got the Air4/256gb too. It’s nice to only have app problems instead of iPad problems. Mine can handle anything I throw at it. 48khz is no problem for me, I just make sure my daws are set for it and go.

@king_picadillo Thanks for the update looking fwd to hearing how it all goes.

  • No buyer’s remorse needed. Consider the alternative of not buying it . You’d only be staving off the inevitable . Look ahead two years from now ... Would NOT making the purchase seem feasible then? NO... It’s only a matter of time till you would have bought it .. Now vs later .. That hole in your bank account would have taken place regardless. The buyer’s remorse will be gone in a month. Besides if you didn’t buy it now, you’d be thinking about it every day whereas you won’t be thinking about it now, not for long, anyway. Relax. You did the right thing,, made the right move .

  • @sigma79 didn’t take it as a neg at all, in fact it made me feel better about getting the AppleCare because I was starting to think it might be a waste of $70.

It’s good to hear that other folks have made the same plunge and are stoked about it.

If I have this thing, should I get the Scarlett Solo or not necessary?:

I’m inclined to say not ‘necessary’ but i guess it depends, what are you recording into it?

  • Hadn’t really used it, because I’ve been using my usb mic to record vocals directly into the cck. I’ve gotten good results. I did record the homie playing electric guitar through it and it sounded good. I degrade my samples anyway so there’s that. Just thought maybe the Scarlett would allow for more control of input volume and such.

  • No tax, nice! Wish that was option here. Eyeing a similar upgrade may be next year.

  • Good news: Got my Air 4
    Bad news: I’m a dummy

Don’t ask me how, I think it was because I was looking at iPad 8’s and reading a bunch late at night and somehow came to think the Air had a lightning connector. I was stoked in that even though usb c is better, universal, whatever, everything I have is connected via cck so I figured I wouldn’t have to buy anything additional. My powered usb hub, my microphone is usb, I have a lightning to usb 3.5 mm for my cans, etc. So frustrated and feel stupid for missing such a glaring detail.

Anyway, is there a solution? USB C to usb dongle that I can use to bridge, does a certified one exist that also charges, is my powered usb hub going to kill my iPad like I’ve read here due to some chip in iPads not being able to handle the current...? Please explain like I’m a 5 year old dummy because that’s how I feel.

  • No answers for you @king_picadillo .... just a warm welcome to the dummy brigade. You’ll work it out... or return it and get a used 512 Pro2 with that comforting lightning jack that makes us dummies feel safe.

Best solution out there in my opinion. Very useful and plenty of connections

  • Follow up: My Air 4 is now fully connected via Apple multiport adapter (eBay is the plug for $25 instead of $60) Focusrite Scarlet Solo interface solving the headphone jack issue (Offer-up is the plug for 1/2 off). Got the 3.5 mm to usb c dongle for when I’m couching it. Air 4 works brilliantly, no issues with sample rate, much faster than my gen 1 pro, handles higher workload flawlessly. Unless you’ll be putting people on an exoplanet and need the M1 Pro, this one will do nicely for a quarter of the price. At least for my needs.
