Waverley XL by Rob Jackson

Description:

Please note: Waverley XL has been designed as an AUv3 (Audio Unit v3) instrument and does not run as a standalone app. It needs to be used inside an AUv3 compatible host such as Apple’s GarageBand or AUM shown in the screenshots.

What is Waverley XL?

Waverley XL is a sample-based instrument, or “ROMPLER”. It is not a synthesiser that allows you to create your own instruments. Instead, the instruments have already been created. You also have some additional sound-shaping options accessible via 10 parameters.

Where did the sounds come from?

The instruments have been sampled from some of my favourite hardware synthesisers with additional effects applied. I designed all the sounds from scratch, specifically for Waverley XL.

Is this the same as MU Waverley in moodunits?

Not exactly. Waverley XL uses similar sampling technology under the hood but has been developed in response to requests and suggestions from moodunits customers. The main difference is really the instruments themselves. Instruments for moodunits are designed to take up as little space and memory as possible and be relatively light on CPU. Waverley XL is “Xtra Large” in both name and nature! While this means Waverley XL takes up considerably more storage space, it also means that instruments can be more complex, evolving and also more interesting to play.

A big design goal for XL was that the playing experience should “feel” and sound more like real instruments when played with a velocity sensitive keyboard and sustain pedal.

Instruments

There are currently 30 different instruments, each with 4 sets of parameter presets giving 120 patches in total. Instruments are categorised as “sustained”, “keyed” or “lead”. Sustained instruments will sustain until you release a key, whereas keyed instruments have a natural, more piano-like decay. Lead sounds are monophonic with a little legato glide and have less dynamic range.

Parameters

Waverley XL has ten parameters that can be used for additional sound-shaping. The AMP envelope and FILTER in particular can be used to significantly change the character of an instrument. If you’re familiar with traditional synthesisers, these parameters should be immediately recognisable.

Technical specifications

• 30 individual high quality multi-sampled instruments designed specifically for Waverley XL
• 16 note polyphony (except lead sounds which are monophonic)
• Note range C0 - C6 (Apple standard C3 = middle C)
• Velocity-sensitive timbre changes with 30dB dynamic range (15dB for lead sounds)
• Pitch bend range +/- two semitones (a whole note)
• Modulation wheel is mapped to filter cut-off (note this will override filter envelope and vice versa)
• Lead sounds have a fixed 100ms glide accessible via legato playing

  • Are the parameters exposed to be modulated? That was the only thing keeping me from reaching for the lovely sounds of regular-strength moodunits.

  • Great work. Don’t know if I need another synth but maybe later I will give this a spin.

  • Is there an option for existing MU supporters to migrate? Just asking ;-). Thanks.

  • Will this have iap sounds as well

@thesoundtestroom is doing a really nice livestream on YouTube about it.

  • Happy to get this. Love your stuff @moodscaper

Or will there be a bundle MU XL for existing MU user?

  • The app is only $6.99, I don't think it's fair to expect a discount. Just think of it as a new IAP for Waverley.

    Agreed.

  • Just took a spin through the presets and it's magnificent. Like Moodunits with the lushness knob on 11.

  • Bought without even reading the description. Agree with @richardyot, the new sounds are going to be worth it alone.

    Where is the lushness knob?

What do the ‘ABCD’ buttons do?

  • Hey guys - thanks so much for the interest. Sorry to say, parameters aren't exposed, much like MU Waverley, they're designed to be set it / forget it being a sample-based instrument rather than a synth. As discussed in other threads, realtime parameter modulation comes at a cost and is complicated. It is not something you just switch on or off - if only that were true

So while I'm trying to keep moodunits instruments fairly lightweight, I wanted to do something where I could "stretch out" a bit in terms of designing sample-based instruments. That's basically Waverley XL. I will continue to develop (hopefully) good value $0.99 IAPs for moodunits, but the idea is Waverley XL will grow - new instruments and free updates. If there are significant updates, the price will go up, but the update will be free. I'm currently working on the next batch of XL instruments.

Download size for XL is around 750MB. No way I'd trust that as an IAP download

  • @CracklePot - the ABCD buttons are basically parameter "snapshots" - essentially parameter settings that I like with that particular instrument. So you have 30 individual instruments, x 4 parameter "presets".

Coming in v2.0  Not really. You have to add your own. I recommend pretty much anything by Eventide.

  • Looks interesting, but with my current limited storage capacity this app at 747 MB I just can’t. Maybe after the new iPad Pro comes out.

  • It’s $5.99 in the states

Good Choices. Maybe some Alteza or Velvet Machine as well...

    Time to make some space

There is definitely always “room” for instantly playable, great sounding instruments for folks who don’t want or need to fiddle endlessly with options.

I meant that figuratively. XL sounds extra rich and spacious. If you like Moodunits, you'll like this, too.

Yeah, although the XL instruments have a lot of space and sustain already.

  • The developer, Rob needs to put a demo video up for the App Store. Examples always get customer attention. :)

  • Bummer, no love for iPhone. :'(

  • Can we make our own instrument by accessing the included sample pool to layer and jam on?

Anyway this looks great! Love the ui not being just sliders but the knob style

  • @Gavinski how about one of your amazing vids?

Same, little too much for me. Will buy it anyway, I love the regular Waverly, an XL version can only be better. Just so that Rob can make more releases :D

  • I'm watching the SoundTestRoom demo damn that does sound good. @moodscaper great job, I love your patches.

Sadly not I'm afraid. The original patches on the synths have been created using multiple layers or "voices", often with modulation and morphing effects, but the underlying samples in the app are pre-mixed as it were. Having the layers separate and mixable in the app would be nice for sure, but it would use up significantly more RAM, i.e. two layers = twice as much memory and so on. Having said that, I've done some virtual layering by simply adding another XL instance controlled via the same MIDI source and some of the instruments do sound nice together especially if you transpose one of them up or down an octave.

@FloRi89 said: I'm watching the SoundTestRoom demo damn that does sound good. @moodscaper great job, I love your patches.

Much appreciated - thank you! That's where most of the development time was spent to be honest - sound design of the patches themselves, recording them and then lots of sample editing!

For those put off by the size of XL, in case you don't know, the moodunits ATMOSPADZ IAP includes "lite" versions of five of the XL instruments - they're not quite as detailed (fewer samples and shorter in duration) or as responsive to playing dynamics as on XL, but they were from the same synth. That's really how the idea for XL came about as I was spending quite a bit of time compromising instruments trying to reduce storage and RAM requirements. Because it's iOS, I can't go totally crazy like you can with say KONTAKT on desktop, but with XL I can worry less about that stuff.

@moodscaper Here we are nearing a year later and I wonder if anyone has asked the question: Have you considered bringing your terrific plugins to macOS? I love using MU Waverly on my iPad Pro, but ultimately have to replace the sounds with something else since I do the heavy lifting for the final mix on desktop. Any move in this direction to make these plugins multi-platform would be fantastic.
