KB-1 as a midi effect in Cubasis and GarageBand

When I try to use the KB-1 keyboard in Cubasis, the sound from the synth is muted. Playing either the synth keyboard (which was working fine before I added the KB-1) or the KB-1 itself produces no sound. Also, I can’t work out how to access KB-1 at all in GarageBand.

Probably me - what am I doing wrong?

  • You need to enable the"midi thru" button.

Yes, something strange is happening when I first tested KB-1 in Cubasis 3, I used Klevgrand Baervaag I was able to use KB-1 to trigger Baervaag. So I was going to tell you it worked then I tried another AU just to make sure and no sound was triggered, from KB-1 or built in keyboard then I tried other AU's and could not get any sound. Tired my iPad Pro same thing insert KB-1 no sound same with using built in keyboard. So I deleted Cubasis on the phone and re installed. Same issue still occurred, then I discovered a work around.

If you insert another midi device in the "midi effect" slot I used Cycle, Fugue also worked press play then go back and replace it with KB-1and it should now work. Also removing KB-1 will allow the built in keyboard to trigger. So in conclusion something is phucked up.

I don't know much about Garageband but I don't see a way to use or insert AU midi effects.

Thanks - I got it working in Cubasis by hitting play. If I change the keyboard layout in KB-1, it stops working again, until I hit play again, then it starts working again...didn’t need to substitute another midi device.

EDIT: hmm, it’s only working like this intermittently.
EDIT 2: also Cubasis will not record anything played on the KB-1

To record midi from KB-1 press the button named "Rec to Track" above the KB-1keyboard.

  • Ah, of course thx

  • Yes it seems to be acting weird in Cubasis. I had the same issue where it worked when I first tried it, then tried again yesterday and no output. I tried use Xequence Keys to see if it was something I was doing wrong in the setup however that worked perfectly. Has anyone contacted the dev about this? Is he/she on the forum?

It would probably be best to contact the dev directly rather than via the forum. While Kai sometimes visits here, he isnt very active here and might miss reports posted here.

Thanks @espiegel123 will do. Just seeing if anyone else had, or if it had been dealt with on the forum previously.

Yeah it's still completely broken in Cubasis. Rec to Track and MIDI Thru don't help. Only way to get it working is by hitting play in Cubasis but you don't always want that. Works fine in AUM and other AU keyboards (Velocity and Xequence) work fine in Cubasis. I'll contact the developer but it's been over three years. Has it been abandoned?

I did contact Kai in regards to Harmonicer, which has the same problem, and also mentioned KB1. He said he was going to look into it but haven’t heard anything back. Sadly it makes these great plugins virtually unusable in Cubasis :(

Still, the more people that put in a request, the better I reckon.

Right - thanks for the info. Doesn't sound too promising but I'll get in touch with Kai as you suggest.

Good work. I think it all hurts. Whilst not a dev, I’m sure this would be a doable fix seeing as most/all other midi fix I have work as expected in Cubasis.

I’m surprised more Cubasis users here haven’t mentioned this?

I gave up on KB-1 long-time ago when it kept on crashing when charging scales and have not looked back since...

Fair enough Samu. Do you use anything else in its place?

Most of the time the DAWs on-screen keyboard & pads are good enough to get the job done.
Over the years I've also learned to play most scales in without having to think too much which definitely helps.

I've reported it to the Dev and have given a clear description of the issue. The built in keyboards in Cubasis are OK @Samu but I'm a Linnstrument player (Linnstrumentalist?) so really want to be use a perfect fourths isomorphic keyboard. I'm using a combination of Xequence Pads and Velocity Keyboard instead for now @Cambler but would like to be able to use KB1 as well.

  • Kai got back to me straight away @Cambler. He thinks he has a fix for both apps. A Beta versions of Harmonicer is being tested now and if this is OK KB1 will be next.

Yes I just saw the email as well. Yay! Will try it today. Thanks so much for making contact as well and kudos to Kai for looking at it.

Just tried the Harmonicer beta fix on both iPhone and iPad and it works! So happy :)

  • For me, KB-1 is the best MPE classic keyboard on the platform, hands down. With pencil pressure even surpassing Velocity Keyboard. The only bug that has been bothering me lately but has a weird, charming effect are those imprinted circles. 🫣

I think I agree about it being the best overall MPE keyboard. There are some really good options including Velocity Keyboard and Xequence AU but I've been evaluating all of them recently and for flexibility, configurability and playability I think KB-1 is probably the pick of the bunch.

Just need it working in Cubasis so we can actually use it for making music🙂
