Little Drambo Experiment with Flexi Sampler

I did a little experimentation today with the Flexi Sampler inside Drambo. My goal was to make a kind of grain effect like in the apps SpaceCraft and Tarigrain.
I'm nowhere in terms of quality like the mentioned apps, but i do like the effect i made with the sampler. Its a bit harsh and glitchy.
The position in the sample is controlled by an LFO (Unipolair) with sawtooth (Saw Up), and the "grains" are controlled with an oscillator in square wave mode (Haven't figured out a speed controlled unipolar pulse). With every "pulse" of the oscillator, the "slice" is triggered at the position pointer of the sample. Then I use a AMP envelope to control the output of the sampler. This is triggered by a midi note.
By tweaking the Oscillator, LFO, Speed/Pitch and Envelope release, you can alter the character of the sound and also pitch.
You can set the LFO sync to "Beats" to follow the song tempo, or you can set the LFO to a very low frequency (like 0.01 Hz) to make a (rhythmic) drone sound.

  • That's a very cool technique... it almost makes me want to start digging into Drambo but
I'm too busy buying more apps right now.

  • @Identor Cool, great sound with minimal effort! 👍🏼

    @McD 😅

Nice sound. I have been thinking about doing some granular synth in Drambo. Good kickstarter 😉

  • These experiments are fun!

Very cool experiment, and I like your grooves.
I have been thinking (not doing) of making some kind of drambo effect that would allow playing a loop with varying speed, but still synch-ed.
So you could speed up or slow dow parts of the bar, but still keep the whole “1 bar”.
Basically forcing a swing into a loop, by modulating the playhead’s speed, but keep it synchronized.
Your video might provide some clues...

  • When Drambo came out and they said you can do anything in it, I heard "You can do beep-beep boop-boops". Then I started to hear strings and guitar stomp boxes and sample playback and granular sounds and ambient oceans and so much more than your basic beat box workshop.

With effort to educate yourself on synthesis and music processing (MIDI, sequencing, automations) Drambo could be all. Colleges should build a 2 year course around it
    in the "Music Engineering" department.

But it returns based on what you invest. Most of the good apps are that way.

  • @bcrichards Thanks for pointing me to your patch. Looking to your video, i actually made a rudimentary version of your patch. You made a well worked out version of "granular" synthesis. Due to the lack of understanding how to intergrade components the right way, i was not able to do such sophistication, like you did :)
