Reason Compact vs Ampify Groovebox - What are your thoughts on them?

These are two “Groovebox” based applications I use a lot, especially on the go. In this video, I discuss my likes, dislikes, and comparisons between the apps.

What are your thoughts on the apps? Also, I added 2 iOS shortcuts (in the description) that I use to help with transferring audio stems from these apps.

    Nicely done.

    Agreed.
Whether it's Android or Apple, both can make
music and they can be great tools for creatives.

    Well said.

  • I'm sure I'm in the minority, but I'm not a fan of freemium apps. Both of these apps have just been getting maintenance updates for quite some time now, too.

Both Propellerhead/Reason Studios and Novation/Ampify have been rather wishy-washy on the iOS platform. Personally, I'd be fine if the big names in music making software abandoned the platform and left it to the smaller shops and indie devs.

  • If I could have all the features/functionality of Groovebox with the sounds of Reason merged into one app I’d be using it a lot more than I use either one separately.

    Amen.

Agreed as well. I like both apps, although it would be awesome if their synths were combined natively. Ableton Link and Audiobus sorta helps with that.
@telecharge I get where you’re coming from. Independent apps are usually the more “daring”, and risk taking apps. That said, there’s also the other side where we’d miss out on real gems like Mixbus, Gadget 2, among others. I’m a fan of both, although I tend to choose the apps that I mainly need.

@Gravitas Thanks. Yeah, I’m finding quite a few interesting apps on Android. Not to the extent of iOS , but still really cool.

Fair play, and I will give IK and Korg credit for being fairly consistent, But unfortunately, they are the exception when it comes to the majors. In addition to Reason and Ampify, Native Instruments, Arturia, and Akai are three more examples demonstrating lack of commitment. Generally speaking, a lot of them just seem interested in selling sound banks and sample packs on iOS.

I think there are higher expectations when it comes to the majors, and I often see comments here from people feeling let down or left in limbo.

  • @Propellerhead/Reason - NOT happy with you! Don’t talk to me until you bring back support for Thor and/or a new Thor AUv3.

@Novation/Focusrite/Ampify - I have the Ampify “Trio” of apps (Groovebox, Launchpad, and Blocs Wave) and they’re neat and everything, but I really have no interest in purchasing anyone else’s loops, from their little in-app store fronts. I DID however purchase the “Pro features” in each app to allow creations of my own to be used. That is the only way these apps will be used here.

  • Groovebox is great though of course it has its shortcomings. Reason Compact always struck me as a cheap knockoff with FAR less features. But if you only produce on desktop and are living under a rock with zero awareness of iOS offerings and you get an email about reason compact, I could understand getting excited about “laying down ideas on the go”

  • For me there’s no comparison, Groovebox is better, Reason Compact is a 3 track. Groovebox doesn’t have everything, but I like what it does have, great sounding easy to program synths, and Ableton export. I can easily get inspired buy the sounds and then send it right into Ableton to finish, which is pretty much how I use it.
I only use the drum module for ideas and replace them in Ableton, but the other modules are great to keep.
Anyway I really shouldn’t say Groovebox is better, it’s all up to the user , and in my case I easily prefer it over Reason Compact.

As a midi nerd has anyone got any views on comparative ableton synths when exporting the midi of groovebox to Abelton live. I can't find any that sound anywhere near as good as the ones in groovebox, but I only have Live lite. I guess I should just get it how I want in groovebox and use the audio.

Operator, Analog and Wavetable should get you very close - at least if you're ready to do some synth tweaking.
Edit: OK, with Live lite you'd rather use a few free desktop synths...

Thanks for the response. I'll keep in mind if I upgrade to the full version.

I’m not sure about Live Lite tbh, I have Ableton Live Suite ver 11 and it comes with a ton of stuff, like 70 gigs worth, and I have some 3rd stuff , but in the right hands I’m sure you can get really close to the sounds in Groovebox. In my case I usually just export export audio clips and add new tracks in Ableton. Ableton Note is pretty cool too with room for improvement, I’ve been exporting audio clips from Groovebox into the drum racks inside of Ableton Notes, then adding tracks in Ableton Notes, then exporting to Live, I’m having a ball.

  • Definitely Groovebox.

if you have any vst of your own, there are free ones on Mac. a huge load on PC, you are in good shape. paid ones, Serum or something else, well…
only holdup for me is the track #? but there are the oldschool workarounds.

    my vote, Ampify…

  • Is it that difficult to make these apps Auv3?

I requested many times. Nothing yet. 😆 I just export the audio and use the wav’s in FLSM. 😎👍🏼

  • Groovebox may be simple but it sounds better than a lot of apps on iOS …it’s delicious at times
