How to record live, a RCA numeric recorder ? (iZotope Spire)
Hello,
I'm looking for a digital recorder, what I'm after is something simple like this:
https://www.thomann.de/intl/denon_dn_300r_mkii.htm
or this (but seems poorly designed...)
https://www.thomann.de/intl/monacor_img_dpr_10_power_supply_set.htm
I'd like to have the same thing (ideally with an usb stick) in a compact format !
All other recorder includes some mics, and I don't need that.
I'd like a descent RCA compact recorder...
What would you advise ?
Thanks

And if someone else has the iZotope Spire ???
I'm thinking of getting the first gen to record the output of a mixer (so RCA to jack or XLR into the Spire)
I've asked to the iZotope support but no answer yet...
Does it record in stereo on both inputs ? Do I need a stereo jack on input 1 to get a stereo signal ?
It could be used outdoor, but mainly as a direct recorder.
Never done this, just used both inputs at once as two microphones (the internal and aonther one plugged in) to record myself playing acoustic guitar and sing at the same time or plug in the electric and sing. What I often do is import pre-recorded (in the daw) backing tracks or beats to play or sing over those. But I think it should be possible.
What annoys me the most at the moment is the new subscription model for a few additional effects, which costs either € 5.49 per month or € 53 per year. Far too much for the little that is offered and not particularly convincing. I've booked a couple of times for a month each. But I only use the Spire two or three times a month these days. So not worth it. iZotope seems to become a pretty greedy bunch anyway. The new Spire is about $150 more than the old one with not much additional value. I don't think I'll replace mine if it reaches the end of its life span.
@crony I sold my Spire a few years ago.
@mistercharlie so not a good experience with it ?
@cabo may I ask if you have a way to test that ?...I mean from a RCA or mini-jack stereo to a pair of 6.35 jack or XLR to record a song from Spotify or YouTube ? Like this I could compare...Hope I'm not asking too much...
On videos I've seen on YouTube, a bassline took on the line input was going stereo (but I think it's a software trick, bass must be mono...)
After thinking a bit more, it must be mono...
Just wonder how it reacts as a simple recorder...I guess quite well...
@cabo and if I may...Could you record with a soundcheck one of this song ? (for instance)

Ok, crony, here's what I did: I connected the Spire with the iPad through the headphone jack output of the iPad with two jacks into the Spire recorder, played two of the Prince songs and recorded a part of each (not the whole song) and it worked and sounds absolutely fine to me.
You can't use the app at the same time (at least in my case) as Spotify or any other internet source as both need a WiFi connection, so you (I) can just use one these. But the Spire hardware thing itself can record just fine and doesn't need the app to do that. Using the app for recording has other advantages and gives you more options, including effects and mixing. I hope this helps. Should be ok for your use case example.
(interesting experiment for me too as I hadn't done something like this before)
.. oh, if you need the recordings to be sure let me know, but to me they sounded as good / the same as the source material
@cabo Don't bother sending the file, it's already super cool from you ! Thanks a lot ! (and you picked Prince's tracks so you're someone with good taste so I believe you )
pleasure, i took Dorothy Parker and the new one
Zoom h5 or h6 if you want portable- you can remove the mics if you want. At the church where I work we have a rascal rack unit that records to usb stick that works fine, but it only does 16 bit. But my h6 works well when I need a portable recording solution.
@mrufino1 thanks, I think I've persuaded myself that I like and need this versatility with the iZotope...
Ah, gotcha. The spire doesn’t work with a computer, only iOS, so I feel like the product life is limited. Also, I’m not digging where izotope is headed with their new subscriptions. But, different tools for different people for sure.
Seems a bit more open now with Android support, but also got the feeling this gear won't last 20 years...
