iPad pro not suspending when case is closed - battery always dead. Any tips?

Hi, I've recently updated from an ipad air 3 to a 4th Gen pro, but every time I pick it up after a day or so the battery's dead :'(
I didn't have the same issue with the Air and regardless of what I was working on and how many apps were open, if I closed the case and left it, I could pretty much pick it up a few days later and it would carry on where it left off with pretty much the same battery life left.
On the new Pro it seems if I have any apps active it just drains the battery when not in use. Is there something I could be missing? There's an audible click as I close the case, so the OS has picked up (via magnets?) that the case is closed, but it's like it's not actually suspending stuff and properly going to sleep.
Any hints or suggestions gratefully received,
cheers,
James

  • Do I understand right that you want to hear a sound if the iPad is locked when you close your case?? If yes, try this option

Check in Settings > Battery. There's a graph there that tells you which apps are using battery over time. You should be able to identify which app(s) are continuing to suck battery over time. Maybe there's something like a mail program or other program that is set to background refresh and is keeping things alive.

I don't know if you've tried a full power-off and back on, but that should also stop any apps that have gone rogue. iOS does have the potential to leave ghost processes of audio apps running, even after the app has been force-quitted. You might want to try that after you've tied to identify the culprit with the battery usage graph. Better to know the cause so that you can avoid it in the future.

  • Definitely some apps working in the background. I know on my 2018 iPad Pro I have to quit out of apeMatrix once I'm done for the day because if I don't when I wake up in the morning my battery has gone down 60%.

Yes, and if you tap on an hour in the Battery bar graph, it will list the apps active in that hour. Tap on the list to switch from power percentage to time. Useful to see what's running when the device is sleeping.

See if you've enabled push notifications for something. I found that TestFlight was burning some time with that.

  • Excellent, thanks all, I'll keep an eye on it and check the battery graphs in the settings. It seems DrumComputer is the most recent cause over the past week. I'll keep an eye on things now I know how to. Of course, now I've complained about it, it behaved perfectly well last night after a Drambo session and woke up with 80% battery remaining
