Which AU master bus comp/limiter for live music... TB Barricade, FAC Maxima, DDMF NoLimits, or?
I'm currently running my live show through AUM... It's a very simple setup with backing tracks, guitar, and a microphone. I'm using TB Equalizer on the master bus, and am thinking of adding a comp/limiter at the end of the chain to smooth out the volume. Looking for a small footprint AU.
The best options I've found so far seem to be:
TB Barricade
FAC Maxima
Blue Mangoo Multiband Compressor
DDMF NoLimits
DDMF MagicDeathEye
Barkfilter's tripleband
I may be missing some. Currently leaning towards TB Barricade since I'm already familiar with how great their equalizer is. FAC Maxima doesn't seem to be a comp/limiter in the traditional sense, but brings some interesting other saturation and gain features to the table. Which is the best choice for my application?
Comments
Definitely Barricade. Just watch out for latency if it’s a live performance.
For live:
TB Barricade 👍
Clipper, compressor and clean limiter.
Barkfilter's tripleband 👍
Multi band compressor with limiter.
Thanks - this is what I ended up going with... I played around with different combinations with TB Compressor too, but liked Barkfilter's tripleband a bit more. Right now my chain looks like this:
TB ReelBus (studio tape saturation) --> Barkfilter's tripleband --> TB Equalizer set to general EQ with 70s/80s Pop AI --> TB Barricade (I went with one of the -3dB settings, don't remember which)
@Coloobar Hi, as I perform live with my band with AUM as synths hosts, I've actually never thought about the possibility of adding a limiter/compressor to the main out.
Would you mind elaborate a bit more on your configuration and the way you use AUM? Why do you think you need a limiter?
Thanks,
Alessandro
I'm using a limiter to avoid going into the reds
I’m liking Barricade. Sounds good and easy to use.
One instance per synth/channel or only on the master?
As others have said, Barricade is excellent. I don’t do live music but I do use it on every track I produce.
I do also use Maxima but not on the master. I use it to beef up my kicks. I’ve heard from others that there are some issues trying to use it live as the look ahead is lacking and can cause issues with delayed response.
Hi Alessandro. I run a radio station in my spare time, and we use signal processing to normalize volume so the audio has an approximate constant volume. Virtually every FM radio station uses it. In it's simplest form there's an automatic gain control circuit with "look ahead" that raises and lowers the gain automatically. There's a multi-band compressor in the chain which is the bread/butter combo with the AGC, and a limiter at the end to avoid clipping. There's often also an EQ in the chain to boost the bass. Bark Filter seems to accomplish all three of these things at once... AGC/multi-band compressor, and bass boost. I'm just applying these same concept to my live sound as well.
Thanks for the explanation!
I find the fab filter limiter to be more cpu friendly and more precise with graphics. More expensive but not more resource hungry.
I made the mistake of testing out the plugins at a lower volume level... When I turned it up to performance level, I was getting too large an amount of background noise that sounds like white noise. I cut it down to just TB EQ, Bark Filter's tripleband, and Barricade set to -2dB and it's sounding quite good to me right now. TB's ReelBus is particularily noisy, even with the "noise" setting all the way down... I find the Master Record app to be better in this regard.
