Audiobus Battle One -Voting Thread, winner @WMWM!

Cheers everyone and welcome to the Audiobus Battle voting thread! Congratulations on an excellent battle, the first of many I hope. A big thank you to Doug for being a good sport, and really for every episode ever of the Sound Test Room.

So, the rules of voting are simple. Every Audiobus forum member, regardless of if they created an entry, gets one vote. Please give all tracks a fair listen and pick your favorite song keeping in mind the rules of the battle. Please leave a reply to this thread with your vote and we'll tally the winner when we're complete. Voting is finished at the end of the day Friday, May 9, US west coast. Thank you for participating!

  • Yay, I really enjoyed making my track (SoundTestRoom)! I'll definitely participate again in the next battle. The restrictions made me learn to find my way more around Audioshare, Samplr and Cubasis, as well as how to rip audio from Youtube using Anytune. Educational and fun, thanks for organising the competition!

  • My pleasure @Michael_R_Grant! Really enjoyed your tune, I'll try to leave comments for every track a little later. Don't forget to vote!

I found the process very worth while as I learned a deeper level of Auria and bouncing. I wanted to create something I thought Doug might enjoy. I would like to see more collaboration within the ios music scene, there's a special connection and learning when working with others that is lost in a one person environment. AudioBus is the product of collaboration.

I vote @thesoundtestroom because he made this frontier all fun and stuff. If it weren't for his skill/demeanor the newer half of members (me included) wouldn't know. Technically he did have an entry...all of them.

  • Alright, so that's one vote for Doug! I updated the original post into a playlist for easier listening and less chance of a browser crash. Lots of time left!

  • somebody actually liked my stuff...sweet!

  • ḯ ℣ǿɫḝ ʄǿ℞ ϻɫყ∆ṣ

  • I can't decide, so I'll say the same as @WMWM.
I vote for @thesoundtestroom for the same reasons.

Otherwise, great job guys, been listening to them all in loop, at least 3 times now. Each one is quite different, and that's the fun. (I would have a slight personal preference for @supadom and @WMWM track, but they're all great)

long live the contest, and thanks @CSwinn for MC'ing it

  • Cheers dude, much appreciated. I think Doug is the winner anyhow ;-)

  • Would Doug want to host the next battle? The torch passes onto the winner, I just hope whoever gets the most votes actually cares to participate.

So rude that my track can't be seen on the playlist without scrolling down. I have so few plays in comparison to the rest! Cries :D

  • Dr Om by @supadom sounds the most profesional and impressive to my ears.

  • edited May 2014

Humble thanks @Mtyas, I don't think I heard an entry I didn't actually enjoy in some way. I am impressed with them all, for the production and the effort. To the community, please cast your vote, let your opinions be heard.

@Cswinn, a poll works well. Would you mind implementing that?

  • edited May 2014

I went ahead and added a poll. I thought about doing it earlier but I wanted people to comment to create a dialogue and bump the thread to the top. I also thought it would help in honest voting. I am a little disappointed more members haven't weighed in, but oh well.

If you've already voted, please add your choice to the poll. I have not added Doug as I don't think it'd be fair to him to pick him as host if he's given no indication he'd like to participate. Also still waiting for a few participants to cast their votes too!

  • edited May 2014

Wow. Very impressive. The whole lot were fantastic. I had to pick one and @supadom got my vote. I haven't even read the other thread completely where you detailed the rules for the competition, but I felt like his track was the best representation of what the spirit of the songs were about. I reserve the right to go read that thread and come back and heavily edit this post. Just a little disclaimer there. ;-). But that being said, I listened to @WMWM's a few times. That's just damn good music right there. But again, every.song on the list was fabulous. Can't say enough how impressive that is. Kudos to all.

Ah, just read the rules over the. Happy with my vote. My favorite section of the rules was "Use your machine like an old Tascam 4 track." Love that. "Commit!"

  • Ace I so want to be a part of the next one.

  • will get my vote in tomorrow. like colin i thought there woulda been more participation. oh well it gave me incentive and thats what i need!

  • edited May 2014

@boone51 , thanks, took a lot of effort, under 5 at a time in Auria is exactly what I did.

@nic_b_nice , trap, nice, that's hard to compete with, I like it a lot

@Mtyas, that is a very fluid beat, like the liquid feeling and "flow"

@duck_waddle, that synth stutter was awesome, very lounge

@supadom, nice sample manipulation, bass hit as well

@Michael_R_Grant, l like the driving sequence, liked the creeping synth

I casted my vote for @Mtyas for reasons in the list.

  • Alright looks like this battle is closed! According to our poll the winner is @WMWM with "Tadpole Angel (Peekays Dub)", congratulations!

Take some time thinking up a few rules and then we can start battle two if everyone's interested. To all voters and especially participants, thank you for battling! I thought all the entries were excellent, great first run!

  • My bad i forgot to vote. Congrats to the winner. I had lots of fun and it was a great challenge. Thanks colin

  • So have I. Well done mate. Now's your turn to device the next one? According to the rules? ;)

  • edited May 2014

@CSwinn, so whats the plan? are you going to start a new thread (in the creations section)? I will post the proposed competition in that thread; I've got a good one in mind. Could we label it "Challenge" instead of "Battle"?(not essential but sounds kinder) KVR has a great monthly competition going that is much fun to participate in, am sure this community is every bit as talented and a bit more ambitious (imho). Thanks for hosting @CSwinn. and Thanks to @Xprmntr for the thread from which this idea sprang.

  • edited May 2014

Well done, @WMWM! I'm looking forward to the next competition!

  • bravo @WMWM and to everyone who participated, it's always fun these "challenges" and I totally agree with @WMWM about the interest of having such a contest in this community. (I love the KVR one, won it once I think, but long ago :) )

I was thinking about the rules.
It seems a shame to make rules with specific synths, (unless they are free) knowing that it can rule some users out. If we base the rules over a technical concept, or an idea (like "sounds from your kitchen", or "reversed sounds", or "no more than 3 sounds, synths...).
And maybe ask the contestant to give us a cheat sheet for his creations (synths / fx / techniques / apps used)
All this is just ideas, I thought I should share, as I really think this is a good idea, and even if we are only a few to start, I'm sure it will be fun at all times.

Looking forward to the new challenge too :)

  • I was thinking the winner would just take the hosting reigns entirely. You would post the new rules, gather the entires for a voting thread, cheerlead etc. My commitments are done and I hope that this can become a self sustaining event each month.

@mytas, I like your idea for conceptual rules rather than app specific ones. When drawing up ideas for this I wanted to keep 'must use apps' to one per battle. I still like the idea of everyone working from the same source and hearing the differences, it also might allow people to challenge themselves with apps they wouldn't normally use. Still, there are tons of free apps out there, app specific rules could be just with those.

Really, I think it'll have to be up to the host each time around to try new rules or ideas and see how this evolves. We're off to a great start, can't wait to hear what you come up with @WMWM!

Sounds like there is no changing your mind @CSwinn? I thought you made an excellent host. A single host creates a sense of regularity. If there are any takers who would like to this honor of being the moderator for future competition, and it is OK with the community, please chime in.

I will assume the responsibility for this next one until/if we have decided on a "Master of Ceremonies".

@CSwinn I also liked your entry a lot, I liked the way you used the samples of Doug in layers with time manipulation, dream sounding, Fabfilter timeless?, nice breakdown at 1:58. Good work.

I will be starting a new thread shortly. Good idea's from @Mytas and @CSwinn. If there are any others please chime in.

  • edited May 2014

Thanks @WMWM, fabfilter fiddling all the way! I think it was timeless on Doug, saturn on the drums, volcano on the bass, with pro C, Q, L, and MB all making cameos while I goofed off.

As for hosting, unfortunately I would not be interested in taking charge of this each month. I'm not really sure what would need to be done by just one person. Currently I participate in ohpeewon.coms battles and they're up to number 22 by just letting each winner start a new thread with some rules and deadlines. The community aspect of a just for fun battle is what brings people to participate and I think it will keep it sustaining too. I personally would vote for just seeing how it goes and have you host this month with the winner taking the reigns. Maybe you and I could keep winning every other month and this will be moot! ;)
