Hey glad I could help and equally glad it worked for you! If you don’t have Koala or Dawnbeat yet I can’t recommend those enough for chopping up these drones and getting weird with them haha.
I haven’t used Wotja nearly enough to properly answer but I use Ephemeral much like I do Autopad where I’ll have quick access to a drone to run through effects or into a sampler. I guess the benefit is the simplicity. And it has some unique sounding drones compared to similar apps. Very cinematic.
I do have Koala actually, hadn’t thought of chopping up drones in there yet. Can’t wait to get started down that rabbit hole!
Anyone know - does Ephemeral City allow you to have a completely dry mix so you can bypass the internal fx when applying your own?
Cheers!
Great stuff. Thanks!
I'll look for the Drone FX link again.
It's just nice to play as I work at my desk, I find!
Drone FX https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/drone-fx/id499500746
Unfortunately not but it’s only reverb. It starts playing automatically as soon as it’s launched and there are 2 parameters to adjust.
That’s the one! It’s old but still works fine for me. No connectivity but really unique
It’s a great rabbit hole haha. Also Dawnbeat is free to try and highly worth it. You can also buy an IAP to use AUV3 effects inside it.
Ah, you can't disable the reverb? Damn, guess I'll pass, thnx!
I’ll definitely give Dawnbeat a try then! Using AUv3 inside the app would be game changing.
And there's a desktop version available too - just standalone but at least it's easier to pipe the audio to a DAW.
DroneFX is one of my favorites. Done in unity if i'm not wrong, that was the main issue of it having no connectivity.
But yep... you can use desktop version. Or even the web one (free)

I did use an interface with loopback in the past... but today I just record from my iPad to my android device, PC or external recorders/samplers for extra layers of grit and fx.
Unfortunately not. No prob, happy to help!
Oh I didn’t realize that. I’m trying to get a new MacBook this year so I’ll have to remember this. Thanks!
Lemme know your thoughts. Right now it’s effects only but Dawnbeat itself is feature full enough that it doesn’t need AUV3 synths within it. Though I wouldn’t complain if it was added 😂
What are you recording with on your android?
Im iPad/iPhone only at the moment but I’m planning on getting the Minifreak soon and another OP-1 as well. I sold it to try out some other samplers I had been eyeing but none of the can touch the OP-1 for my uses.
I wish it was with my Zoom U-44 but that one is plugged to my ipad. On my Android, I use my old Behringer UCA-222
Sometimes I'm lazy and just plug phones out from ipad into the UCA
Don't have a Lightning to USB-C cable to try plugging one directly into another.
On Android I record into Zenbeats
Oh wow I didn’t know Zenbeats was on Android as well. How is it compared to iOS? I love Zenbeats, it really grew on me.
Can drone lab / drone fx reverbs be turned off? I don't mind lack of connectivity etc so much if an app does something useful for me, but having dry audio to use my own fx on is essential if I need to use it in a demo vid.
Can confirm that drone lab produces some nice dry reverb-free tones. Very happy with it so far.
Sweet, thnx!
Ya'll want drone material? Check it:
Droneo https://apps.apple.com/us/app/droneo/id313811077
flexible miro tuning drifting
Shoom https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/shoom-synthesizer/id1086363141
3 voices tons of parameters unique interface (and tuning)
no reverb on the first
you can turn off the FX on the second
Yes both really cool apps!
Very excited to get both of these, thank you!
If I can steer the conversation further… I’m a total beginner who really has no idea what I’m doing. I’ve got a small collection of apps that I’ve accumulated over the past month or so. I’m interested in figuring out how to make droney ambient sort of music.
What other apps would you guys recommend for transforming these drones, or for the genre in general? I get the impression that the other members of these forums have vastly more knowledge than I do.
I forgot Layr
As for as transforming drones almost any effect will do, especially:
reverbs
delays
panning
filters
and some saturation/distortion
rhythmic apps like gates will help too. Imagine gently sloped gates at various intervals which allow transitions between sounds...
Watch some YouTube vids! How to make drone music etc
In terms of apps, Fundamental 2 is pretty good though the manual is fairly hard going. The factory presets there tend to be more on the extreme side but it can be used subtly for very nice drones.
Thank you very much! Layr looks like another really interesting one.
I’ve gotten a couple of reverb and delay apps now. Panning/filtering/saturating/distorting/gating look like my next steps. Thanks for giving me the leads/keywords for my searches, I still don’t know enough to know the right questions to ask. Really appreciate all the generosity and patience. 🙏
Thanks I’ll definitely try to find my way down some YouTube rabbit holes. I’ve actually seen some of your videos, and found out about this forum because you mentioned it on your channel. I’ve really appreciated your content!
I’m excited to give Fundamental 2 a try as well. Thanks for the lead!
