Updates Galore
I’ve seen like 40-50 Apps get updated in the last few days all with the phrase “This App Has Been updated by Apple to use the latest signing certificate” but if you open up the “more” button it appears all those apps have also added everything from small fixes to decent updates. Mostly slightly older apps, not updated recently. Just wanted to let everyone know to check their app updates if you haven’t recently. Sometimes I have to pull down on the window a few times to refresh the page to get all the updates. Cheers!

I saw that too and nearly had a heart attack when I saw that Caustic 3 was updated. I looked at the list of improvement and they are from the previous release. I don’t know why Apple is putting the previous release note included with their minor certificate update .
Hmm, they must be preparing for a big iOS/iPadOS update. Isn’t there an Apple event soon?
I’m kinda looking forward to news on a new iPad Pro.
I believe the update descriptions just describe the last update by the dev, showing its date, generally long ago. They are not new improvements.
The updated signing certificate probably makes these old apps compatible with new (upcoming?) devices. App binaries are encrypted, and this cert is part of the encryption process.
Yep, Apr 20
New iPad Pro, Pencil 3, iOS 14.5 expected
@yug. So: everything broken again then, expensive hardware rendered useless, investment in apps trashed...? You know...
...The usual.
Thank you
This is the way, at least according to Tim Apple
Hopefully not, as it's not a major version update. I'm really looking forward to it though, I will finally be able to sort my reminders. Took them years to add it
Well, you don't have to update. But I do consider apps that get certificate updates from Apple to be at risk of not working in the near future on the latest iOS version. They get them because the developer hasn't updated the app(s).
I have to say I was little surprised to see BitWiz, dot Melody, and Filtatron getting the Apple certs. Hopefully, @j_liljedahl, @benkamen, and @MoogMusicInc can keep these apps going.
I thought they were getting them because they're now in compliance with Apple's requirements about reporting user data collection. Maybe I'm mistaken?
That doesn't seem to be the case unless the app store is lagging on updating app privacy details.

@telecharge : agreed, and none of this would matter if Apple just allowed you to do proper local backups and roll backs. As they once used to do... As is, you are inevitably faced at some point with either kissing goodbye to an old zombie app which hasn’t kept up with the times, or never downloading the new shiny thing because it only runs on the latest OS. Proper local backups would make this all go away, but hey, who cares when there’s new Ipads to flog and mobile games to cash in on?
I’m not aware of any new Pencil rumors, but new iPad Pros (or “iPads Pro”) are a given.
Ohhhh so some are previous notes not new ones. Cool.
Actually, all are.
If there's a developer-released update it won't have the Apple signing certificate verbiage. Certificates are transparently updated in the background if available when apps are updated.
Also, the certificate update doesn't signal any preparation for new operating system features. Signing certificates are expired and replaced periodically. When developers release a new version, the newest certificate is used. If they don't then the certificate doesn't get updated. Apple replacing them is a preventive measure so that the apps can continue to work when the old certificates are expired.
Gotcha. I did not know that. It was like a lot of apps in a few day period so I didn’t know exactly what it meant. Thanks for the info.
I doubt that I will give BitWiz in its current form much love, but I might do a new AUv3 version of it instead.
The thing is, it takes two sides to keep an app alive: the developer of the app, and users buying the app
The current state of BitWiz is that it produces almost no income at all, and updating an old app might need considerable amount of work and time, because it needs to be adapted to modern iOS SDK / Xcode versions etc.
@j_liljedahl : fwiw, I will happy repurchase a ‘BitWiz 2’ AUV3 version. I love the gnarly and unpredictable noises I can ‘code’ just with a three finger sweep - the closest I am ever going to get to being a programmer!
.
Just a heads up if you do do it - it might be worth emphasising that you don’t need to be a programmer to use it. I held off for ages thinking BitWiz wasn’t for me until I saw a vid which showed me that I could generate random code with that swipe.
I totally understand and appreciate that. Thanks for the reply. My hope is more about Apple not introducing any app-breaking changes which make the apps unsustainable.
As is mother fucking god damn fuck my life tradition!
This is actually the #1 reason why I won't be spending 300$ for the SWAM brass app suite. I can buy a used trumpet, flugelhorn, trombone, AND tuba for that price (with patience on craiglist this is absolutely doable) and they will work for the next 100 years if I take good care of them. You can not call an ipad app an investment when it updates itself out of existence within a few dozen months. Which is why 10$ is about the max most people are willing to pay for an app. Which is a shame because SWAM absolutely deserves to be paid well.
You don’t need all the swam brass anyway. One high one, one low one, and you’ve got more than 80% of what the entire suite can do.
In the specific case of SWAM iOS apps, I don’t think Audio Modeling will neglect their maintenance duties as these are their only and flagship apps.
