Any Apps (or software) with a Similar Workflow to iMaschine2?

Wondering if anyone knows of another app on iOS or even Mac that shares a similar workflow to iMaschine2? Specifically, the “step mode”? This is the mode where the pads themselves turn into the sequencer and you program where you want the samples to fire by lighting up the pads.

I didn’t really like this app, at all for quite some time but I stuck with it as I was considering buying a controller at that time and Maschine was high on the list of potential purchases. I assumed the work flow would be similar but I think that assumption was off base. I’ve checked out the software on Mac and it actually doesn’t seem even remotely similar to the iOS App.

Anyway, after spending some time with this app, I actually really like it a lot for certain types of music (namely, hip hop). There’s no other piece of software or iOS app that I’ve used where I can consistently lay down a the main groundwork for a track than on this app. Something about the workflow using that step mode just clicks with me for programming drums and other hits that are traditionally one-shot sounds. From there, I do live record over the top of the beat as well for piano, or whatever instrument sounds I’m adding.

Problem is this app is super limited. No 3rd party plugins, no real mixer, no way to import samples, the list goes on but it’s missing a lot. It doesn’t even allow you to export stems, so despite being able to knock something out very quickly, it’s not all that useful to me except for coming up with ideas or goofing around.

Anyone know of another program or app that shares a similar workflow to this? I feel like I’ve seen a similar workflow but no idea where. Any tips?

Thanks guys

  • Right after posting this, I thought of WerkBench which I have and am familiar with. That’s somewhat similar to the step mode but I find that app to be pretty cumbersome to work in. I like the idea and it’s fun but I can’t see really using it quite like I have in mind.

I love IM2, yea it’s been awhile since I used it, but I still bust it out once in awhile. I also moved some of my fav kits from IM2 into Digistix.

Generally speaking I would say check out Beatmaker3, although it does not specifically have this sort of step mode, it is very inspired by Maschine. It actually got me to buy a Maschine MK3. But yah, if this kind of step mode is manditory, hmmm, I think other apps have it (Maybe iSpark if that is still around, but i dont think it has a lot of the other things you mentioned).... really BM3 is king of iOS hip n’ hop.

yeah, I definitely dig BM3 as well. There are times where I just want the mindless feel that comes with that step mode. Funny you mentioned iSpark. I’ve owned that for a while and just recently spent quite a bit of time on it last weekend. Sorta/kinda similar - I guess to your point, there are quite a few sequencers out there on iOS that use the pads in the way i described. Something about the way they’re laid out in that 4x4 pad mode in iMaschine though... (instead of one horizontal row of pads, you get the traditional rectangle lay out of the drum pads - just like on BM3 actually but you can sequence right there!) It must be a visual type thing for me - it really shouldn’t make any difference if it’s 16 pads in a row or 4x4 in a square but it does!

How do you like the Mk3? After I got a copy of the software on my computer, it kind of killed the excitement I was feeling towards the hardware but I can imagine, the software is only a small portion of the workflow in practice. Will probably end up buying one one day.

Hell ya @Poppadocrock, that workflow really is pretty amazing once you understand it huh? I’m just stoked to find someone else who digs it! Anytime I’ve brought it up, seems like I’m the only one that likes the thing! If I recall, the reviews are also pretty bad in the App Store, super strange to me, especially considering how cheap your can get those little sound packs and how huge of selection there is. If they’d keep adding on features, it really could be my favorite place to work on iOS

Wait, how did you move them? Did you sample them with SynthJacker or something? Super curious!

  • I love the Mk3. Yah I did find that using it without the software was indeed fun and novel but combined with the software for me is the best of both worlds, especially since I am now using Stutter Edit 2, Egoist and others with it. It is simply amazingly flowy. So many cool things I have not fully exploited yet in the five months I have had it.

Nope. It’s super easy. Start with new empty project. In the 4 instrument slots, Load 4 separate drum kits (preferably ones you like) one for each color, A, B, C, & D. To change piano instrument to drums, hold down any instrument tab until you get a pop up. Then with nothing in the sequencer only the 4 kits loaded, select hamburger menu, in upper left corner, select Export to Maschine, then select Audioshare. You will get a zip file in Audioshare. When unpacked it is the 4 separate drum kits into individual folders in wav format. Voila!

  • I learned that awhile back from this forum I think, someone made a YouTube video on how to do it but that’s basically it.

I’ve always liked IM2, but as my iOS music making progressed over the years, I grew out of it so to speak. I’ve become very fond of the DAW-less workflow with AUM and Atom 2. IM2 is a closed system, so a personal preference. It has great sounds, it’s fun, somewhat simple, and has an intuitive workflow. In the beginning Gadget and IM2 were my favorite 2 apps, both still great, but with im2 it only has the 4 instrument channels, plus it lacks Au, midi, cc, etc....

    What about GR-16?

  • @Obo you can do just 1 Kit at a time but I always did 4 at a time to speed up the process.

@espiegel123 thats probably the best bet. GR-16.

Good call! That’s been lost in the stack of apps I used to love! Thanks man 🙏🏼

  • I would agree GR-16 too.

I think the chances of NI making iMaschine usable now are slim to none.
