Three LFO values

Hi, i am trying to run three lfo values, occuring one after the other, two extreme ones (0, 127) and one in the middle, using a square shape. I'd like to use it to drive one parameter (let's say strum in Mozaic). Nothing should happen in between. How would you do it? Thanks.

  • it is normal behavior, square gives u only max - min.. if u want “something between -move MOD parameter for example

No, it has to be constant, without fluctuations, so MOD will not solve it.

  • You'll hate me for saying this, but Drambo can do it. Just use a ramp LFO at the desired repeat rate, and a Graphic Shaper to convert the linear ramp into the three output steps. Send it to a CC Generator and there you are. Remember, Drambo is AUv3, so you can just add it to your AUM setup.

Stepbud let’s you get very accurate with your cc modulations, I use it all the time for things like this.

You can use the range setting of parameter you are controlling in AUM to set what the max and min are.

yeah, I know - the app is powerful but kind of difficult to grasp. I will have to wrap my head around it someday :)

    I mean, I need ramp LFOs ..

If you want three distinct values then stepbud is perfect.

The way the question is worded makes me think you want three discreet values. 0, 127 and one in between, say 64. Stepbud is an easy way to do this I think.

If you have ramps you don’t have just three values by definition.

If however you want to ramp up to 64 and stay there then ramp up to 127 and stay there for a bit I’d just use a DAW with cc support and draw it in.

yes, of course you are right about ramps, I didn’t explain it enough, sorry for that. What I need is to stay for a bit at 127, and then ramp down to 0 or 64, so exactly as you’re saying. Do you know any DAWs capable of doing it on ipads?

I have a mozaic script called Blueboard Switch Ramper. Although it has Blueboard in the name, it can be used with any note or CC source. It produces a timed ramp between any two values. If you fed it the target values in the right timing, it might work for this purpose.

I tend to think that modulating one LFO by another in midiLFOs could accomplish this too, but I haven't managed to figure out the combination yet.

Thanks Wim, I’ve just installed the script and it’s driving strum in a desired way - take a look at the clip. The problem is I have to do it manually. Hooking it to another lfo (rozeta) gives me strange results.

I tend to use NS2 but that can only automate the parameters you set up as macros. Might be enough for your circumstance though?

When I do this kind of thing I add a track lane and put the cc stuff in its own lane. That makes it easy to just draw the cc once into its own region which is then easy to loop independently of the notes.

Yeh, that script will work better if you just feed it notes or CC's rather than an LFO. Just sending it three notes at the right timing might do it. I don't know if it's a good solution for you or not, but the word "ramp" made me think of that script.

There are some modules in miRack that could be set up to work this way. Maybe more of a brain bender than you want though. :D

It seems to me like what you're really after is more like a looping envelope than an LFO. I might be able to come up with some solutions for you, but they'd probably be a bit out-there. I'm not sure how far you're willing to go or how important this thing is for you.

  • As I suggested, this is not difficult in Drambo. This generates an LFO waveform as you seem to have described.

Or this generates a one-shot waveform, triggered by a note input.

You can use Drambo as a MIDI AUv3, and route the generated CC as desired. And you can edit the wave shape and rates as desired, tempo-sync, etc.

  • Thank you guys for all the answers. I'm new to the party, so currently I am steering clear of brain benders and complicated stuff, so as not to get lost:). It's even difficult to explain it properly (a non-native English speaker here).
This is why I seek simple solutions, and maybe I'll give Drambo a go if you say it's possible there. Once again, if you take a look at my terrifying drawing, you will notice what I'm after. Making the changes (between these values) occur automagically would be even more dope. Since a picture (or a movie clip) is worth a thousand words, let me also show you these:

As you can see, switching back and forth between certain values in strum parameter, pairing it with touchscaper or suggester, rhythmbud and atom, creates some nice rhythmical varations in chords..That's why I've started a thread:

  • Stepbud can do that. Cheap and easy.

You need to turn off notes for each step when you’re only doing CCs but once you’ve done that once you can save a preset with your desired CCs set up. Each step can have its own rate so you can make each value last as long as you need. You can have any step count so can get poly rhythmic effects (say having 7 steps over an 8 step melody)

Yup and you can set the length of each step, and the amount of steps, so you can get really good detail in how you want the modulation to happen over time.

  • edited April 2021

Also MidiMixer has 3 user mappable cc values that allow you to literally draw in the modulation amount over a timeline. So you basically draw the shape of the modulation exactly when and how much you want.
