Stupid Deal of the Day
I'm a big fan of this Musician's Friend promotion, where they have a huge discount on a single item for a single day (today is 21 April), like this Marantz shotgun mic. Usually $79, it's on sale for $29! I mean, for the field recorder among us, how can you pass this up?
Although I'm not sure I'd want to walk around the streets of Brooklyn (or Chicago, or Cleveland, or Sanford, Fla.) with an instrument that looks like this:
I'm reminded of Hunter S. Thompson, tooling around in a convertible with a big ol' shotgun microphone in "Fear and Loathing":
“Las Vegas is not the kind of town where you want to drive down Main Street aiming a black bazooka-looking instrument at people.”
Comments
The only problem is that I already have too many mics purchased via the Stupid Deal of the Day.
Definitely with a Vegas/desert backdrop
Me: oh cool, that pigeon cooing is recording crystal clear
Police: bang bang bang, get on the ground!
Currently seeing a Roland cable instead of the Mic. Am I doin it wrong?
Same.
The OP probably sees the Marantz deal because he's in a different country (not the US)
I'm in the US and saw the Marantz deal this morning and now see the cables. I'm guessing they sold out of the mic and have moved onto a new deal?
I've never seen that either, but apparently they sold out of the shotgun mics.
Huh.
They do this most times when they run out of a deal. If you are subscribed to their email list, they sometimes will send out a second email letting you know of a new deal. They didn't send a second one to me today.
It's a useful design. Great for field recording, but if a riot breaks out, you're covered.
Pretty sure I've never seen a more lethal microphone ... needs a shoulder holster.
From what I see at a safe distance, for young black musicians that mike's a suicide note... a seriously hazardous device in the wrong place with the wrong cop.
Marantz gear is good ... but not that good. Home of the brave indeed.
It’s not a good mic. It’s basically analogous to the QTX SG300 which is usually cheap from China and can easily be beat.
Would be a better deal if they spelled it “Stoopid Deel of the Day”
If you are looking to pickup a G&L Tele, it's worth hitting their website every morning. They put up one for $299 fairly regularly and every time I have to repeat to myself, "you already have a Tele."
Got one. I love it.
Now that doesn't help me at all! They do look really nice.
@u0421793 : would you have a recommendation for a good cheap shotgun Mike suitable for field recording?
Ha. I mean, I'd never buy a guitar online — until there was a pandemic and there was a G&L tele for $200 off.... The frets are a little sharp, but right out of the box it plays beautifully.
I've bought a few cheaper guitars online. The sharp fret ends is pretty universal. It's dry where I live too, so even if they aren't sharp when I get them, they will be in a couple of months. I use one of these, https://www.stewmac.com/luthier-tools-and-supplies/tools-by-job/tools-for-fretting/shaping-and-crowning/fret-end-dressing-file.html
It's pretty easy to use and is nearly foolproof with a bit of masking tape. I see they are out of stock now though. If you can get one, they'll take off the sharp fast.
Not personally, all the shotgun mikes I’ve experience with are basically cheap crap. But, I’ve just noticed this video, which might be useful to you:
Audio Technica AT875R Budget Short Shotgun Microphone Review
On the other hand, I’m not completely convinced a shotgun mic is the best thing for field recording. I mean, it’s a good thing for field recording, but I’m a lot more interested in mid-side recording techniques for that sort of thing, as are a lot of other people.
