Audio + Generative Art app?

Are there any apps for the iPad, or a combination of apps... where you could specify some aspect of the audio, be it beat... or preferably frequency... that you could send that data to another visual app and tell that app that in that frequency range, or whatever data you're sending via midi... to then make generative visuals based on that data?

I'm not talking so much about audio reactive apps with canned effects that react to audio... but more control of the parameters of how the visual elements are generated based on the incoming midi data?

Maybe something like Holon.ist could be used for this. But as far as the visuals... all I know of are apps that have more canned and basic video effects that react to sound. Not actually drawing or possibly effecting fractals based on the sound.

Is there something obscure out there that does this already? Or, a combination of apps that can do this?

I would look at K machine to start

Poop, which is no longer on the app store (that I can find)

    • Playback and mix two channels of video with independent playback speed control and 10 different blend modes

    • Display the output on an external screen or projector using any iPad-compatible video-out adapter

    • Use the iPad's front and back-facing cameras as input to integrate live footage into your set

    • Record video of the app's output in real-time, and use immediately in your set or transfer to a PC later

    • Apply one of 54 effect filters to each channel and the master output

    • Control effect parameters using the multi-touch enabled preview area

    • Preview the output in full-screen on the iPad

    • Save and load your set to recall, backup or transfer sets between iPads using iTunes File Sharing

    • Configure the interface layout to your preference

    • 10 demo clips by hexler and pixeldelay included

    • CoreMIDI support allows full control of TouchViZ wirelessly using OS X CoreMIDI Network sessions, using iPad MIDI interfaces such as iRig MIDI, iConnectMIDI, MIDI Mobilizer II, Yamaha i-MX1, or by connecting a compatible USB MIDI-controller using the iPad Camera Connection Kit

    • Open Sound Control support allows full control of TouchViZ over WiFi from any application that supports OSC such as Max/MSP, PureData, Max4Live, TouchOSC and others

    Mar 21, 2020 Version 1.5.1

    • MIDI note messages trigger clip playback of same number on currently active channel

    • Better support for dark mode

    • New splash screen

I've already got TouchViz... and it's good... not quite what I'm looking for.

I'm basically looking for something that's more or less the equivalent of combining a graphics/painting/drawing app... or one that already makes more generative art.. like some of the fractal based apps.... but is capable of taking data from sound creation to sort of drive the generative graphics creation.

I don't think anything like this exists... but I thought maybe there might be a combination of apps that might work.

My guess is that you'd pretty much have to code something like that yourself. But, there are somewhat generative graphics apps out there.... and there are lots of apps that can send musical sound data from one app to another... and there are graphic effects apps that can react to beats in sound, and I think react to frequency as well (at least I know that Motion on macOS can do that)

So, I don't think it's a huge leap to have something that does what I'm describing... I mean, the components of what I've described are already available in various apps.

  • There are actually a bunch, varying in quality, and usually each app is an individual piece, or group of pieces that contain audio, video, visuals, and interactive elements.

  • Let me know if you find something, I’ve been looking for the same to no avail. Of course anything remotely close has looked like an absolute nightmare from a UI perspective or like you said, requires some coding skills

  • Auv3 video synths would make my ipad setup complete

Yeah, I don’t think there’s anything like I described. But I’ve been surprised before with recommendations on incredible apps hidden in obscurity.

I think I could likely get close in Apple Motion on the desktop. You can control parameters of various effects including the various builtin generators by specifying both beat and/or frequency ranges.

Was just curious if anyone had found something interesting on iOS.

  • I slightly misunderstood your question... though there is one.. crap I just saw it the other day and can’t find it. I’ll get back

  • I remember seeing that one and checking it out. Seems it was mostly just changing colors and stuff... but there might be something more there now. Will have another look. Thanks for the reminder! :)

  • I'm not wild about any of the demo/samples... but I can think of interesting uses of this app's core functionality. I'd prefer that it also recorded the audio + video of your midi/graphic "performance". I messaged the developer and he said he figured people would just use screen record, but that he was going to add record audio/video to the next update. He said it'd be about a month though.

If he does, I'll pick this up and experiment. I'll drop a note when/if that update comes. :)

  • Recently got the following.

Glitch Clip VJ for Everyone - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/glitch-clip-vj-for-everyone/id1487987092 - I really like this. Wish it had slightly for range for tweaking and more effects. Feels like it will be great for warping video just enough that my hideousness will not be made a worldwide problem. Will probably use it to do a bunch of short videos to use in a single project put together in Lumafusion or something similar.

TouchViZ - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/touchviz/id486139371 - Sweet. Not sure I get it yet but works well. When I am across the best way to import video I reckon it will be a good way of putting together a bunch of video clips I can use for a YouTube track. I imagine it would be great for live work as it seems so instrument like. Very much invites the user to tweak and use sliders on the go.

vidibox - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/vidibox-music-video-mashup-vj-dj-musicians-movie-makers/id643295952 - These guys should either be congratulated for writing such a cool app or publicly flogged for letting it turn into the steaming pile of completely non functional horse poo that it currently is. I'm voting for the flogging over the congratulations. For VJ tasks it works as well as a completely blank piece of black paper about the size of an iPad. Refund!
