Are you guys happy with SoundCloud?

Hey, I can't complain too much, because so far SoundCloud has been free for me. Most of the time it works just fine for me to share my songs, including directly from Auria or other music creation apps. But there have been a few times lately when something does not upload correctly, or it inexplicably gets posted without any audio. And just today I had a devil of a time trying to change a track from private to public, and I just gave up. The other complaint I have is that the iPad app does not have all of the editing functionality available on the website.

Anyway, are you guys generally happy with SoundCloud?

  • I dunno, I'd have to say to "yes" because I've never given them a dime, and they give me 2 hours of storage space not just to share projects with other people, but to check in on what I was working on from work, from a mobile device, or even through my car stereo on the way to work (bluetooth from phone).

Could there better services and functions? Sure. But for a free service, I think of it the same way I think of YouTube or DropBox.

  • I have not had any trouble with Soundcloud - except for some initial confusion in setting it up and a few text oddities on my iPhone 5 while onsite as well as failing every time to do a search for my page (bookmarking helps, but why doesn't the search find me?) - it's been just what I needed - a place to put my iOS music attempts.

  • Apart from the fact that every so often it tells me that I don't owe copyright for my own music it's been ok. Also upload to soundcloud is one of the exporting option on some apps like audio mastering so it all makes sense.

    Yep.

  • Perhaps not a problem if a track is private?

  • I got it about 6 times at the beginning of this year. Very annoying, I had to re-master the tracks and cutting off a few seconds which would normally do the trick. I was going to look for an alternative but then it hasn't happened since. @PaulB I thought that if one uploaded a track to soundcloud it was mainly to make it public?

  • Could be, but the option exists for some reason.

  • I've uploaded some music as private because it was a work in progress, and I wanted to work on it on different devices later.

  • soundCloud is a convenient option for me to store my practice sessions on guitar, which use JamUp and other iOS apps. I practice on my iPad and use the web or iPhone to listen from work or the car. This is mainly private use. But I am making a point to make a few of these sessions public. Anyway, that's why private to public switching matters to me. Cheers, Joe

  • When collaborating with _Underscore, the private tracks and comments where invaluable for us to discuss each other's contributions.

I love Soundcloud. It is great time to be a music producer. It's also great to be able to hear what the music scene is actually like and not just what the radio stations would have us hear.

Lastly, the reason I got a paid account is for the feature to replace the source file after publishing. This is useful if (like me) you want to tweak the mix after publishing ..because when is a song ever finished ? ;)

  • I also love soundcloud and agree with everything said above.

Two things I would change in the interface:
    1) I would enable the "like" button for a person only after he hears the track.
    2) Alert when someone un-follow you. Or even better an un-follow meter for a person to track specific type of abusers.

There are some people who abuse soundcloud facilities to attract followers and then remove their following link back to you. I think most of us meet some of them online.

Cool, that makes sense but, isn't this easier using Dropbox? I don't really upload until the mix is close to ready unless it is to show stuff on this forum, comps etc.

  • Sorry, just got to read the rest of this thread. Was it me who questioned usefulness of private? Nope, not really. I was just replying to Paul. My copyright issue was bothering me because I wanted the tracks out there so in that case keeping it private as a walkaround to that issue wasn't really the right thing. :)

  • Dropbox works for that too, but some apps don't support it directly yet support Soundcloud.

  • Love Soundcloud!

  • I think soundcloud is a useful tool, and it's hard to argue with the features even the free account gets you.

My biggest issue with Soundcloud though, is that for a site dedicated to musicians, they sure know how to slaughter the audio quality of everything you upload for streaming. I wish there was a way to enable streaming at the same quality as the source file, instead of everything being converted to 128kbps MP3. Even if it's already an MP3, leading to transcoding.

  • Post demo tracks on Soundcloud, stick links to higher quality files on other sites in the comments section of each track, if higher quality distribution is your aim...

  • That's exactly how I do it too, highest quality AAC's on my site for the fans, full-quality wav and aif on Addictech.com or Bandcamp.

Soundcloud is just a message board for announcing those. :)

  • Doesn't matter if you're linking from Soundcloud to Bandcamp...

  • Well logically, if someone searches on Soundcloud and comes across your creations, they can then dig deeper on Bandcamp. Only those with any real interest will take it further. A one-off listen on Soundcloud ultimately means nothing imo.

  • Soundcloud can be a great networking tool, but it's like any other social media site in that regard. If you put in the time and engage a lot of people on the site, you're bound to grow your fan base.

If you're just using it as an easy way for other people to hear your music for free and aren't into the networking thing, then I think there's definitely other options out there.

  • Just saw this new SoundCloud client ($3 app) called Soundflake: https://itunes.apple.com/app/id865336890?mt=8

Looks like it's mainly for consuming content, but it might be worth keeping an eye on it.

  • Soundcloud is very good, but the user interface should be upgrade, sometimes I can't even change my profile photo, this is so annoying.... But the music upload procedure is simple and smooth....

  • I dig it for what it is....just a free service to get tunes out there for people to listen to, comment and give feedback on. I have regular tracks I send to favorite people from my hard drive. Easy to upload stuff to using iOS though...I like that about it, and it's an easy widely accepted way for musicians in different parts of the country to jam together.

What are they ? I think YouTube gets the most people looking for music.

YouTube would be my choice as well.

To solve the private to public problem:
1 - Click on the edit (pencil) button below the track in your profile.
2 - Under Basic Info tab (DON'T go to Permissions tab; that's for setting download permissions etc. I dunno why they didn't just put private/public settings under here).
3 - Below that block you will see 2 radio buttons. Choose the one you need and Save Changes.

    Done!

  • Not happy at all with it, especially the ios app having NO features for content providers, and the fact that on iOS Safari I cannot even DM people, post tracks to groups, edit tags etc..

And soundcloud have shite customer service and absolutely no intention of making life easier for us millions of content providers..

    +1

  • I used to be able to access my account from my iPad. Now I can't. The iOS version is essentially useless based on the last couple of times I used it. I have't been back in a while. So no, it's not working for me.

  • Yes and no, I think it's a great place to 'store' your music, in terms of having somewhere to point listeners to, but Bandcamp is probably better for that now. In terms of community and trying to promote your music there, I wouldn't concentrate too much on Soundcloud for that. In some cases, there's far too much reciprocal (and fake) likings and commentings going on to get any real feedback.

Customer service I've found to be very good, but I've had a pro account for years so I couldn't say how it is for the free accounts.
