grasping AUM
I'm really trying to grasp and get a grip on AUM but after watching a few youtube videos i'm still super confused can you guys please give me some suggestions ot tips? its just so complex, its by far the most complexion app that i have ever come across...I really thought watching tutorials would help but still it confused me even more and it brought on more of overwhelmed behaviour

What are you having trouble with? Can you be more specific?
Check out @gavinski 's wlakthrough ...
AUM is not an app that you use, like Synth One. It's an app that solves a problem. So, first you have to have a problem; you want to interconnect apps via audio, MIDI, or both. Then you use AUM to solve that problem. Maybe you want to apply some effects to a synth, or connect a controller to an instrument.
Have you read the manual?
What are you trying to do when you get stuck?
Just think of it as a virtual Mixing Board, with AUX/Busses and super flexible MIDI routing capabilities.
Hope that helps.
I don’t own AUM but I’ve a stupid question - will it allow me to use the KB-1 keyboard with GarageBand? I believe GarageBand won’t allow midi effects (such as KB-1) so that’s the problem I’m trying to solve
No it will not. GarageBand doesn't show up in AUM since it's not an auv3 and does't show up in AUM via InterApp Audio.
You can use KB-1 standalone to send midi to Garageband. You don't need AUM to do this.
Just load KB-1 and set the output to Virtual Output. Garageband should pick that up automatically.
The best way to think of it is as a mixer that can also host your AU3s. It does other stuff also (MIDI routing, connecting IAA applications and external audio, recording and hosting files) - but if you think of it as a mixer that can host plugins you won't go far wrong.
People like it because it's super flexible, is very stable, has a nice UI and is ultra efficient. For audio and midi routing it's super-flexible and pretty easy to understand. It rarely crashes and its the one app that you can pretty much guarantee will work with any app that isn't buggy (i.e. if it doesn't work in AUM, it probably doesn't work in anything).
The major limitation is that it isn't a DAW. That can be an advantage (DAWs aren't great for jamming), but if you want to do conventional Cubase/Logic style recording and editing it isn't perfect. You can work around some of that stuff to some degree using external sequencers (e.g. Xequence, which is also very nice) and AUV3 apps that support audio playback - but none of these are perfect. However, it might tell you something about how good AUM is as an audio host/mixer, that lots of people will try to make it work.
Sorry, I don’t understand. I set up KB-1 standalone, set to virtual output. How does GarageBand pick that up? How can I use KB to control a synth inside GarageBand?
I don't know how GarageBand picks it up. It just does. KB-1 will play whatever Garageband instrument you have active on the screen at the time. Make sure GarageBand has background audio enabled though.
Got it! But there’s no way to record that in GarageBand?
You can record, but it's somewhat lame. You can press record in GarageBand, then quickly switch over to KB-1 and play. If you're fast enough you can do it during the count-in.
Thanks!
