Yes I agree. The Daphne Oram story in particular has long fascinated me. At one point I was hoping to do some editing work on this film, but alas for me it didn't work out. Fantastic subject matter, long overdue some exposure and due respect.

This link has international streaming options:

Here in the UK it's £9.99 to stream and half of that goes to your chosen local arts cinema - I think that is a magnificent gesture and I heartily applaud such an arrangement. Booked in to watch with my domestic sisters tomorrow night, can't wait.

  • I was just coming here to post this. Looks great.

Yes, this is such a great option. Haven't seen this before, but it's lovely being to pick any cinema anywhere. I think tonight I'm feeling a Dundee Contemporary Arts energy.

  • Nice one, I think that could be a good chance for me to give something back to my beloved Prince Charles Cinema in London, surely one of the best indie cinemas in the world, where I saw so many legendary films at dirt cheap prices despite the fact it is just off Leicester Square!

  • I might have to poke our local one to get involved in this, Hebden bridge picture house is definitely the best I’ve ever lived near, they do home made cakes and cups of tea at the concession stand and its community run, great programme and incredibly cheap when it’s open... I love the Prince Charles as well though, it was my home from home for a few years when I worked in that part of town :)

I didn't see the Prince Charles on the list of participating cinemas (I went with the Dalston Rio in the end), but I should also have mentioned that there are various non-cinema partner options as well, including Rough Trade, The Wire magazine, and even the Camden Horse Hospital (which for clarification to non-Londoners is not an actual horse hospital…).

It's a lovely film. It's given itself way too much to cover, but there's some stunning archive footage of everyone involved and their gear, including Suzanne doing a gig with her back to the audience so all they can see is her Buchlas and patch cords, and Laurie demoing Music Mouse! It's mostly in Justice League ratio to fit the archive footage, but there's a tremendous coda where it opens out into full screen to catch up with the survivors today. The closing shot of Eliane reacting to hearing her music played live by an acoustic ensemble is just wonderful.

  • Unfortunately can't find a streaming link that will work for me in China.

  • UK viewers heads-up: Freeview premiere tonight (Saturday) at 10.30 on Sky Arts as part of their electronica weekend (repeats of I Dream of Wires and Rise of the Synths were on last night), preceded by what seems to be a new Gary Numan profile at 9.

Thanks for posting that! Timer set!

  • This is a truly excellent documentary - essential viewing for synth heads!
