Hi @tja ,
Most of the older series have “stories” consisting of various numbers of episodes, probably the most typical number was 4 for each story.
Which stories from the 4th Doctor did you purchase? This might help us understand why it’s not gelling for you.
I went to Pluto on my iPad and iPhone I still get Doctor who. It
Must be a US thing but you can use a VPN
The Leisure Hive was the beginning of the end for the Tom Baker era. I think he was going through the motions by that stage. "Revenge" is also rather dull, I find, possibly because it came off the back of Genesis of the Daleks, which is widely thought to be one of the standout examples of fine Tom Baker Who. Try that one, or Pyramids of Mars. If you don't warm to those, Tom Baker probably isn't for you.
Also: some people have mixed feelings about Douglas Adams' tenure on the show, but City of Death is also fantastic.
Two stand outs for me are “The Talons of Weng Chiang” and “The Pirate Planet”
Also, "The Brain of Morbius" & "Horror of Fang Rock".
I watched some of the ‘classic’ Doctor Who when I was younger (up until the introduction of K-9, which told me everything I needed to know about the direction it was heading), but recently started watching some of the modern ones as I noticed that multiple seasons are on HBO Max.
In general I’m not much of a sci-fi fan, but they are quite entertaining. Very different from the classic show, and so far I’m really enjoying David Tennant’s Doctor.
And David Tennant is back as The Doctor later in the year. Why The 13th Doctor regenerated back into the 10th Doctor we don't know yet. 60th Anniversary Epsiode later this year.
As i did liked Dr Who in the 70's, i also watched Blake's 7. British Sci-Fi.
I was an avid watcher during the Tom Baker and Peter Davidson era and spent my pocket money on Dr Who books along with my weekly bag of sweets.
The new era started off ok but I was put off by the more cinematic styling and bombastic nature of it all, and haven't watched it since Matt Smith's period.
When I started making music on my iPad back in 2021 an early attempt in GarageBand was a Dr Who theme version.
Dr Who is a 'synth classic' (appreciating that the early versions weren't done on synths!)
I wouldn't post this on my Soundcloud, but if its possible to upload a sound file to the forum I might do so on a Creations thread.
Could be fun to hear other folks interpret the theme in celebration of 60 years of Dr Who!
I actually like that it’s so bombastic - it’s way beyond the point of having a solid base in science, so the over the top works fine.
The only thing that stands out as poor is the incidental music - it’s just so cheesy.
Murray Gold's music "cheesy" - how dare you! You cad - you bounder!
I loved his music. It added a huge amount of value to the show but when Jodie became the Doctor they changed the music guy to someone who does a lot more modern, electronic music. Not nearly as good.
Murray had some lovely themes for many of the main characters. He also was good at setting the mood of scenes - scary scene, urgent scene, funny scene, victory scene. His music was not subtle, but was used like lighting to set to the mood very clearly.
That’s exactly it - I would much rather hear subtle over what I’ve heard so far - too in your face most of the time.
I preferred the incidental music from the classic series where it was (mostly) more subtle and sparse.
As for the theme music, I don’t know why it’s been arranged so many times - just use the original - no one is going to match it, let alone better it.
