Screenshots of the Fabfilter AUs on 11" iPad Pro?

Hey all, looking at upgrading my iPad this Friday and debating about getting the 12.9" for the first time or sticking with the 11" Pro I've always used. If anyone out there has the 11" and Pro-L/Pro-Q, could you post a screenshot so I can see how much screen real estate they take? Bonus points if you can do it while hosting in Cubasis.

Thanks for any help!

  • I second that. Same difficult choice for me. I'd love to have more screen estate but I also want to be mobile. Is the 12.9 too bulky? Does the extra screen estate really add value in Cubasis or AUM? Are there many apps that cannot utilize the extra space?

Almost same size as a macbook. The macbook is a little bit wider (and heavier of course)

  • Comparing screen resolutions:
    11" - 2388 x 1668 pixels
    12.9" - 2732-by-2048 pixels
    That's +15% width and +23% height

  • I get black bars on the side of my 2018 11" iPad Pro for many of the music apps I use (e.g., Ripplemaker, Ruismaker, Arturia iSEM, Digital D1), which means they were never optimized for the pro. When I've tried apps that do this on a 12.9 they just look like crap. One of the main things that has always kept me from owning a 12.9 iPad Pro. If the better screen was going to be in the 11" there would be no decision in my mind for myself.

Interesting, but I think that's not so much an issue for me as I never use these apps standalone. For me the important point is that the AUv3 host does scale to the higher resolution properly and then the AU windows does consume less space.

  • Hope this is helpful!
This is the default window pane size, it’s highly usable at this level, though I’ll often expand it for a more granular view, particularly with Pro Q.

  • Thank you very much, I really appreciate you taking the time to do that for me. Starting to think I might just stick with the portability of the 11" at this point.

  • Thank you!!! For me it looks not like much more workspace. Your zoom level is quite high, though. I probably also go better with the 11" but spend the saved money for the 1 TB model.

I just went from 10.5 to 12.9. I haven’t adjusted well and wish I would’ve gotten the 11”. It’s no longer comfortable to hold in portrait mode and type (and I use it a lot for texts/crosswords/emails, thank Jesus there’s the pencil for free writing or I would’ve returned it), and I have pretty big hands. On the plus side, it’s great for videos and movies. But I broke my rule of portability (I really like small things) and won’t be doing it again.

You see 1 additional channel in AUM if that helps….(last I checked)

Curious if you get 16GB RAM with the 1TB 11" Pro, or is it just with the 12.9" models that the additional RAM kicks in at 1TB and 2TB?

Ah, never mind, the answer is both models follow this allocation scheme.

Thanks, I think I need to listen to my gut on this one and stay with the 11" I know and love, even though I've been really curious about the larger size for ages now. It's definitely a portable device for me and not a laptop replacement if I'm honest with myself. With all the traveling my wife and I have coming up this summer (hopefully, covid pending obs), the smaller one is just more convenient.

I ended up buying Cubasis and some FF plug ins today and trying them on the 11" I currently have, and they were more than usable on it.

Thanks everone for the tips, screenshots, and experiences!

  • I've used the FF plugins on my 13" laptop before moving to my 11" iPad and found them to be fine size/resolution wise. Had wondered about upgrading to a larger size iPad but based on this thread I think I would also stick to 11" also.

  • I think the most significant adjustment moving from 10.5 or 11 up to 12.9 is losing the handheld portability. The largest iPad is just big enough that holding a 12.9 is almost always impractical. I have to use a lap or a desk for any task that’s going to take more than a minute, or else get used to holding it your forearm (kind of like a football).

That can be a significant limitation depending on how you expect to use the iPad.

If you can get past that limitation, then I would go against the majority here and say bigger is always better. The new 12.9 screen is undoubtedly going to be gorgeous, and the extra screen space just makes more room for possibilities, whatever your workflow is.

If your Apple Store is close... give it a try?

Yeah, I have to add, the most important factor is I’ve noticed zero improvement with my experience in Cubasis/AUM/apeMatrix. The only other real plus I can think of is it feels more like a luxury item cuz it’s big I guess so I don’t use it much any more to waste time—only when I’m gonna play or record.

  • Sadly all the Apple stores near me are online purchase pick up and tech support only, you can’t just wander in and play with things anymore :(

I think the handheld aspect of it is what’s swaying me to stay 11. I read books, I play games, I take it with me on vacation.

Oh yeah forgot to add, the extra finger stretching makes games more of a pain too. I just have to hold the device when I’m playing a game. And with the standard Apple folio case, it’s a heavy MFer on the wrists.

I use a 12.9 for music, writing (I do a lot of writing with scrivener), drawing and watching dramas films etc. this is a difficult decision for me. I have kept my old air 2 9.7 and use that for reading manga and books.

For me, It’s a laptop replacement. I don’t know how I’d fare writing so much with an external keyboard and organising notes on an 11 inch, and mainly watching films and dramas, I think would suffer a lot. I originally got it for drawing.

I read loads of manga and books, and I have the opposite problem there. I’d love there to be an all in one solution but I feel like the 11 inch would be too big, maybe too heavy I don’t know, but with the larger screen size I might find manga pixelated or not as clear. I’m really torn. And books maybe too big too. I always feel 2 iPads is excessive but not sure.

If they’ve dumped 9.7 altogether going forward I’m really unsure what to do.

Interesting, I would not expect this but looking at the screenshots above I feel the same. Having one more track in AUM is also not really a winner. I think the 12.9 is the best choice for graphics and video but that's not what I'm up to. I actually created a paper model and now I believe the 11" model hits the sweet spot between portability and size. I also don't mind the aspect ratio. The 11" also allows me to buy the 1TB/16 GB, so I'll be future proof and I plan to use this device for some years. Decision made - THANK YOU ALL!!

  • Nice! I think you made the correct call. I wanted the 12.9, showed up to the store, they were out so I got the 11 and I’m very glad I did. Even the 11 seems quite big at times (games, reading) it’s large. To me the 12.9 is for having it set on a desk 90% of the time.
