Apple M2 Rumors
Today dropped some rumors about an upcoming M2 chip with up to 16 high performance cores. As the M1 with 4 such cores already beats the sh*t out of the competition regarding mobile processors, it will be armageddon for them if these rumors will come true. Who will buy a windows laptop then?
All of Apple's investment into processor know-how and the gained experience with the iPhones and iPads over the last 10 years now play out so well that they will be light years ahead of the competition if they keep this pace. The move to ARM was an excellent choice. Moreover it is nearly impossible for the Windows/Intel camp to do a similar move. Oh my...

It needs to support >16GB RAM and more than 2 Thunderbolt ports.
My guess is we will see a new chip by the end of this year but not in mobile devices
I'm really curious about iphones and cheaper ipads - what CPUs will they have?
Definitely waiting for M2 to update my MacBook Pro from 2014. Looking forward to this, hopefully out later this year.
Apple doesn't usually do hardware at WWDC, but they do occasionally with something that is particularly dev focused. I could see a MacBook Pro 16" being announced at WWDC this year.
Also, according to beta testers they are restoring support for some AMD GPUs in 11.4
I wonder what that means. External GPU support coming to M1? Or new Mac Pro's having AMD graphic cards?
I do feel the main focus of WWDC'21 will be future versions of macOS and iOS/iPadOS/TvOS/WatchOS and streamlining AppKit<->UIKit development and maybe even some new tools to make it easier to port/create touch-friendly versions of apps suitable for touch devices. I also feel a lot of focus will be put on AR and I would not be surprised if 'Virtual Gadget' will get a demo. With the arrival of thunderbolt on the M1 iPad I guess it's time for iPadOS to get 'user space drivers' for printers and other stuff that need additional drivers.
And yes I would not be surprised if Apple used their own 'Pro Apps' as examples on how to do touch friendly versions quickly and with relative ease
M2 will eventually come but I think it'll take another year...
...Apple will milk the M1 for all it's worth.
I don't know... it's like having a 2000 HP sportscar while 500 HP would more than enough for me
If I could go back in time I would tell to the younger myself to get the 256GB one
I'm totally fine with the performance of my iPad Air 3. My only problem is the 64GB storage
Anyway once I upgrade I'll go for an 512GB with 12.9" display.
Not an easy task, I don't know how they can do it. I mean to meet somewhere in the middle, they need to dumb down macOS and to make iOS more sophisticated - and that's gonna make both mobile and desktop camps angry
Unless they support discrete GPUs then I don't care how good the CPU is, most graphics Pros and gaming people need discrete GPUs which they can get depending on their requirements. Apple have removed themselves from the equation for a lot of people. If you're not a specialist graphics person or a gamer then I can see the appeal.
For my use the M1 is not that great for professional work in comparison to PCs, I'm happy with iPads and iphones and more upgradeable PCs unless they come out with a good upgradeable option (unlikely).
So I'm interested in what they do next but nothing about the new Macs are tempting me so far.
I know...
What I think the focus will be on how to accomplish the same 'task' either using traditional methods vs touch and how the frameworks will handle the user interaction in the background letting the developers focus on function rather than having to focus too much energy on user interaction.
It doesn't have to make the 'camps' angry as it would get closer to 'write once run everywhere and on everything'.
The CoreOS (macOS or iOS/iPadOS) are quite capable but iOS/iPadOS lacks the 'user interaction layer' for many, many things.
Apple could, if they wanted have a 'simple/advanced' switch in iOS/iPadOS settings similar to what is already present in macOS when you create accounts with limited capabilities with a dumbed down finder etc.
It'll be interesting to follow where things go!
Are you speaking from experience on the graphics use? I’m hearing great things from the blender teams, and I’ve seen some rendering demos that made my hair curl, out competing 3 series gpus in cycles for instance...
There’s a very small chance they’ll have some kind of preview of their AR Glasses at WWDC, but I wouldn’t bet on it yet. I think that’s still a product that is 2-3 years away.
As user @yug reported there seems to be some support for discrete GPU boards baking in the oven. I acknowledge that this is important for graphics / video / games but for music making the M1 or M2 is a great chip.
I'm sure certain apps will work well. But from what I've seen and read over countless videos and reviews, video editing with certain codecs isn't good but works great for some general codecs, rendering is much slower and most GPU benchmarks don't even come close to mid range 3 series.. I know it's great for some use cases though especially if you're more audio only.
I'm not ruling it out getting one of course one day, but I've just not seen the evidence it's worth it yet.
I don't want to use an eGPU anyway so it looks like it's just not aimed at me.
Interesting, I’ll have to take a deeper dive, I for one welcomed our nvidia overlords at first, but diminishing returns and the continuing crypto debacle have disabused me of that warm feeling - I nearly had to buy (in desperation due to needing to deliver a bunch of renders quickly) a hefty 2 series last year for over £800 until I was rescued by a friendly/dopey sales person who let me have one of their oem 3060ti cards for the ‘cheap cheap’ price of £550 😆😂😭
If what I’m hearing from these folks is true, they interact with Disney/Pixar teams, then as an animator, M1/2 is going to be right up my street, and it’s a welcome relief to finally be moving towards high performance/low power consumption after so long going in the other direction...
Just like MMU's, FPU's, and DSP/Vector units the GPU is going to end up being only integrated. We are probably still a couple of years away, but it is coming.
The M2 or whatever they call the chip in the MacBook Pro is probably going to have 12 or 16 GPU cores. The thing that ends up in the Mac Pro could be 32.4 on CPU and something like 16 or 32 on GPU. There are already ARM processors out there that are on this scale.
TSMC has just announced they are on track for 4nm and 3nm. These processors are going to get massive over the next couple of years.
The other thing for graphics on the Pro level machines is to look at what Apple has with their FPGA accelerators. I'd be surprised if these didn't find their way into more machines in the future.
Yeah it's not a good time for getting a GPU, but it will change again hopefully!
I have an RTX 3070 OC and would like a 3080 of some kind soon, but not at the prices we're seeing currently.
Certainly less power consumption is a good thing, but real time performance is most appealing.
Who will buy a windows laptop then?
Tough question! But maybe not all is lost. A few ideas:
ok time to stop now
I wouldn't count MS or Intel out yet. MS is making the move to ARM too. Intel used to have the fastest ARM processor you could buy. Intel is still probably positioned best for the future once they get their fab situation fixed. Outside of the x86 world, Intel has done some pretty impressive stuff that was mainly held back by Windows. It'll be interesting to see what they do with their new (old) leadership.
Spoiler : there will be a M3 soon...
i shall wait, then 😎
Yep. We have to remember what automakers call 'Dynamic Obsolescence' and how tech companies apply it by aiming to narrow the gap of time between new device purchases. The second Apple finished the M1 chip they were fast at work on the M2 and then M3. Which are likely already completed.
But they need to release only marginal technological improvements each year to keep consumers buying. Build too perfect a device and people will buy it and never buy another one. Not good for sales.
