Audio from Mac to iPad - totally dim question
Long time reader, first time poster.
Am sure this is probably the dimmest question on here for some time but here goes - is it possible to record audio input from a Mac desktop (eg a VST/plugin being played) as audio direct into an iPad DAW (eg something like Blocs Wave or Garageband). So not Midi data but the actual audio? Is that daft?
Thanks to everyone on this forum who's posted over the last 18 months - you've opened a whole world of fun and creativity for me during this time

It's possible, but you will need an audio interface to do that. You could use the headphone out jack of the Mac into the audio interface on the iPad, but two interfaces would be better from a sound quality point of view.
IDAM lets you do this the other way around without any audio interfaces (iPad -> Mac via lightning or USB-C cable depending on what iPad you have) but not from Mac to iPad.
However, I personally never bother recording audio into my iPad from my Mac. i just render the audio on the Mac and save it to iCloud drive (or use airdrop) and import it into BlocsWave from there.
I've never really found a situation where recording directly into the iPad from my Mac would work better for me. In my head it's way easier to record on the mac then share the resulting audio files, all nicely chopped and ready to go.
I use BlocsWaves a ton and have never recorded directly into it, I always import the audio from elsewhere. Other methods are obviously available :-)
I think most members would agree when I say All questions welcome. No dumb questions. Especially if you are having trouble finding an answer. Every single person who knows a lot about all this stuff, started somewhere. Plus there’s always more to learn. New releases, new features, etc.. it’s an endless quest in the pursuit of knowledge.
It sounds like you are asking about getting audio fro Mac to iPad. You might want to change the thread title to reflect that.
Sonobus is one method. There is some info about it in the Audiobus forum wiki and elsewhere on the forum.
I believe SonoBus can do it. It's still in beta though.
Haven't tried it myself, still waiting for an ethernet adapter to arrive
Maybe Solocontutti, and it’s partner app.
Thanks for the link!
Thanks so much for the pointers - think Sonobus might do the trick
Good luck dealing with the latency. Sonobus over WiFi is problematic. If you have an Ethernet adapter for your iPad and your PC then maybe it'll be better, but still not fantastic.
IMO it's far less hassle to just record to a file and then to simply airdrop over to the iPad. With live audio you have to deal with all the setup BS and then you have to manually adjust your tracks to get them to line up.
There's a new version of StudioMux in Beta. This was a bi-directional way to go with audio over a usb cable, sometimes reliable, sometimes not. I tried the beta a few months ago and it was sort of OK. It's probably better now.
If you really want to do live audio from Mac to iPad, an audio interface that can accept the headphone output from the Mac is a decent way to go. Two interfaces is even better.
That's my two cents.
If you still want to try live audio then I hope it works out great for you.
Oh and btw, not a dim question at all. It's been discussed on many threads over a several years. It's one of those things you'd think would be easy but isn't.
Yes, using SonoBus over WiFi is not a good idea. Gonna try it over Gigabit ethernet, those usb adapters are so cheap now.
I also had some success connecting the ipad to my MBP with a USB cable and sharing the network connection. I haven't tried SonoBus yet, just did a quick test - disabled WiFi, connected two devices with a cable and turned on Content Caching service on my mac. Didn't think it would work but I was actually able to access my LAN and also the Internet. The downside is the ipad is not charging when content caching is enabled.
You can Air Drop audio files from MAC to IPAD and vice versa..
You can use an audio interface connected to the iPad and input audio with an audio cable.
