iPad Air Interface Recommendation?

Hi all:
I am a fiddle player, starting to use an iPad Air for practice and performance. I also use a pedal board w/a volume controller, reverb, etc.

I'm planning to purchase a SoftStep 2 to use with some PC software (Transcribe, and Reaper) and also to control Loopy HD on iPad.
I also want to purchase an audio interface for the iPad.

After shopping around a bit, I see 2 choices - the iRig Stomp, which then requires an adapter cable from the SoftStep to the iPad's lightning port, which would prevent the ipad from charging while playing.
Or
A device which has multiple inputs like the Alesis iO Dock II.
Any insight into or recommendations for an audio input device for this use will be appreciated.
Thanks much.

  • Food for thought:

    • the iRig Stomp does not have midi. And unless there's some undocumented feature, there would be no way to add a midi interface as the iPad dock connector is used to connect to the iRig.

    • the Alesis ioDock 2 (same as previous version but provides an adapter so 30pin and lightning work) is made for iPads 2, 3 and 4 to fit. While you can connect an iPad Air, it will not be held in place. It does have midi (in/out - 5 pin din). The USB ( type b) midi is not a host and is designed to connect to a PC/MAC. A keyboard/ controller can't be connected to it.

I haven't seen (or played with) a Softstep, but it is my understanding that you need the Expander to use it with out a PC. The expander looks like it only has 5pin din Midi. I've sen some post by others that have Softsteps, so maybe they can clarify.

No great suggestions at the moment, but I think the iRig Stomp is out if you want to have Midi.

  • Thanks for the feedback. The iRig Stomp connects via the 1/8 inch jack, so the softstep could be connected via lighting (requires a $30 adapter). Seems like the cheapest way to go at a time when there isn't a well tailored solution for this setup. However I've seen some complaints about noise from the iRig Stomp...
