  • Thanks Gavinsky. You’ve really helped me a lot.

I have really enjoyed (and learnt a lot) from reading this. @shinyisshiny it was very sweet of you to start this. Thank you everyone, and thanks for your suggestions. It is great to see how much so many people love the channel. (Yes I do feel a bit like I am giving an Oscar speech lol, what a buzz)

On a more serious note (sorry guys) I feel I need to address one or two things, mainly this: People sometimes complain about me discussing the financial aspects of the channel. Well here goes.... If I complain about how little youtube pays me it is only because I really need people to understand that PayPal donations are necessary. I'm not joking here, I work on this pretty much full time and yet the youtube revenue is tiny. See the screenshot showing the last 28 days youtube revenue. And remember that is before tax. Not only that, I'm in my 40s and need to put money away for my future. I can't live on pocket money lol. I work on this pretty much full time, as I have said before, and between youtube and my very sporadic day job (as I have also mentioned, my industry and my income has been badly badly affected by this covid year). Over the past year I have made nowhere near enough to cover my expenses and have dipped significantly into savings. I'm sure there are people here who make my youtube monthly revenue in one hour of work.

People appreciate regular in depth reviews on apps soon after they come out. It takes time, it takes work, and it can be very stressful to get these out quickly while also keeping them up to the standards I expect. I'm not kidding when I say that this job is more rewarding than my regular teaching job, but it is twenty times harder and more stressful. So this is why I feel the need to make people aware of this, as I hope it will spur more people to actually make donations. There are a few regular and generous donors but these kind souls are very much a minority, albeit one I appreciate massively). I will eventually start a patreon but I need to make content for that first and have been too busy, as well as having had to wait for certain things related to tax to be sorted out. If I can't make this work within the next year or so to give me a modest but sustainable level of income, I will definitely be forced to abandon my dream of being a full time youtuber and things will revert to the occasional video here and there while I go back to the unfortunately essential business of actually being able to put food on the table and make sure I will not spend my old age in dire poverty. So let's see what happens. So yes I get defensive, and anyone who doesn't like that, well... Sorry but that's not gonna change.

About specific ideas related to videos, some are interesting and others are not going to fly because of ways the youtube algorithm works as well as my personal preferences and visions for the channel. Its just impossible to keep all the people happy all the time. You don't like the mention of free giveaways as part of the video, well, it only takes 10 or 20 seconds, so skip over it if you wish, but it isn't going anywhere. And my youtube videos will continue to be mostly long form, for various reasons due to personal taste as well as the youtube algos etc.

Anyway, thanks again for your love, appreciation and suggestions, it is a pleasure to be part of this wonderful community and I respect and appreciate so many of you, some of whom, as. I've pointed out, have become bona fide friends even if we have never met irl!

  • @Gavinski, have you ever watched any Shelby Church YouTube videos? If one is on YouTube to make a living, her videos give a little insight as to what works best.

And she also mentions that writing on the site called Medium actually made her more money than YouTube:

@NeuM thanks! Thing is, all these things depend a lot on niche. Is anyone looking for anything remotely connected with the type of content I am doing on Medium? Definitely not. Same goes for things like Quora, which a lot of youtubers use to get exposure but is not remotely popular for iOS music related questions. Youtubers who make stuff with broad appeal can make a good living just by playing the numbers game. Doing something very very niche but invaluable to many of its viewers is a different ballgame altogether, and is why I encourage people to support me directly if they like my stuff enough and have the financial means to do so. There is no pressure or no begging there, just describing the reality and letting people make their own choices.

It’s a tough gig to make a living at, so if I come across further information which might be useful to you, I’ll pass it along. Best of luck.
