iPad USB audio query, digital to analogue (DAC) conversion

Hello,
I have a guitar to USB cable (NUOSIYA Nylon Hybrid Woven USB Male to 6.35mm 1/4 Inch TS Mono Jack Connector). I connect this to my iPad via the official Apple camera connection kit. This allows me to use amp simulation apps. I am then able to listen to the audio by plugging in headphones into the headphone jack on the iPad.

What I would like to do is to listen to the audio via USB from my Behringer Q502 USB audio mixer. To clarify, I am able to listen via the mixer by plugging in a suitable cable (3.5mm to red and white 1/4 inch) from the iPad headphone jack. However, I would like to send the audio via USB, rather than via the headphone jack. This is for convenience (not having to plug in the headphone jack) and because I understand the audio quality is better this way. But when I try to do this (by using a USB hub), it does not work. I have researched online and it seems that iPads cannot deal with more than one digital to analogue converter (DAC) at a time. This appears to be the issue for me, as there is a DAC in both the Behringer and the guitar USB cable. However, I just wondered if anyone has found a way of achieving what I would like to do, perhaps using different kit?

Many thanks, Adam

  • Hi. It's not just the DAC, iOS can only use one Audio Interface at a time. So you need to select one interface, and route all audio input and output through it. Can you input the guitar through the mixer, and monitor the iPad output through the mixer? Otherwise, I believe many of the small audio interfaces do allow this.

Hi, thanks for taking the time to reply. I can plug the guitar into the mixer using a regular guitar cable 1/4 to 1/4, but that means I can't use the amp sim apps on the iPad - the audio is just the plain pickups on the guitar itself. I wondered whether it might work by plugging the guitar to USB cable into a mixer or audio interface with more than one USB port, if there are such things? Cheers again

  • The 502 does send and receive audio from USB. I have one and have this connected to my iPad, but I don't have a guitar.

I think you might be able to do this, kind of a workaround, but instead of connecting your amp / speakers to the main bus out, you'll have to take this from the headphone output.

All the inputs except USB and the 2 track in automatically get sent to the main bus.

There are two buttons that control routing of the audio from USB / 2 track.

USB to main - disable this and the audio out of the ipad won't get mixed in with main bus

USB to Phones / Ctrl room - this is designed for monitoring the audio from USB via headphones. Enable this and the headphone out will just contain the USB audio from your ipad.

So hopefully, your guitar plugged into the mono line input (under the microphone xlr) should appear on the main bus, the main bus gets sent via USB audio to your ipad where you apply fx etc..

Then the output of your ipad gets sent to USB in on the Behringer, where you've routed it to the headphones.

No, that won't work. It's not just a question of USB ports, but whether the port is a USB master or slave. I suggested your mixer because some USB mixers work as bidirectional USB interfaces, sending the mix over USB, and allowing monitoring over USB as well. Something like the iRig Pro is what you need. It handles these two functions for a single input.

Edit: I checked the manual for your Q502USB and it think it will do the job. You need to use the "USB/2-Track to Phones" switch to hear audio from the iPad, while sending the main mix to the iPad.

  • Hi both, thanks very much, that does indeed work! I will have a play around it with it as it seems to need the gain and level up very high to sound correct. Cheers for your help

The iPad volume control may be involved; you might need to turn it up for this.

^ This, plus also, this may or may not be obvious but make sure the main mix knob (bottom right on the mixer) is at 0db (center)

I sometimes use my 502 as a loop back to record audio from the ipad (to record audio from a browser or YouTube) and I have to do both of the above to make sure it's loud enough.

  • Great, yes that worked well. Thanks for all the help!
