App to create/play back chords with your own voicing

I wanted an app that would let you quickly create and play back chord progressions, add I found chordbot which was basically exactly what I was looking for. The only thing I wish it had was letting you edit the chords to create any voicing you want (currently it only has inversions or change bass note).

Is there any app out there that just lets you select any keys and let you play them back together as a chord. I.basically just want a way to try out whatever voicings I want without having to hold down all the keys at once on a phone screen..just hit a button and it plays back.

    Tonality

  • Import cordbot into Atom2 and edit. OR you could try one of these apps:

    • ChordMaps2 (ipad) has all the voicings and arps and scales and... seriously everything
    • Chordez (ipad) which is somewhat unique in that it offers EASY access to chord substitutions
    • Tonality (uni) lets you identify chords play chords on pads with various options including strum. AND it lets you edit the chords very easily to get the voicing and add & slash chords you want
    • Suggester (uni) is good as well. Similar to Tonality but more single-minded in what it does. If you want to compose in ONE key and sequentially play back your chord changes its got ALL the chords. You wont even have to construct them.
  • ChordPolyPad can handle the chords aspect. I think it even has a built in library. Then you can assign each pad (which contains your chord) to a midi note and sequence/trigger the chords in CPP from your preferred sequencer.

Routing would look like something like:
    Sequencer>CPP>Instrument app.

  • I'm a total sucker for Tonality and use it all the time to record chords into Atom 2 or other sequencers.
Tonality also offers midi input Incase there's a need to trigger them pads from a sequencer.

    It's definitely worth a look!

Other options might be ChordBud for sequencing chords, it offers plenty of option to invert and create custom chords.

When I'm super lazy I just use QunatiChord...

+1. It supports slide-over so it can be used with any app.

I love tonality but yea no sequencing, however it’s easy to make a custom voicings and then play the pad into Atom or Helium or any daw.

Chordbud 2 might work for you. You can do chord variations, change octaves & inversions, but not custom voicings. I’d love to see a little more control over the notes in ChordBud 2.

  • I was always scared away from QuantiChord even though I thought it was really interesting, because of some initial bad reviews. I should take another look.

IAA you have Navichord and Chordion.

  • Tonality is the best chord playing app by far for my money

  • Wouldn’t it just be quicker and easier to play your own voicings on a piano keyboard?

Only if you can play piano. I can play all those fancy chords on a guitar, but I have no idea how to play them on a piano.

I can play guitar and piano, but they’re actually a lot easier on piano. Inversion and extended chords seem to take more thinking time on a guitar, but on a piano they seem to be much more obvious.

It’s worth putting in the time on keyboards as there are many voicings on piano that are much harder to play on guitar, especially when you start stacking many thirds and augmenting and diminishing notes.

  • Sure, I’m always trying to learn to play piano better. But right now it’s definitely not quicker or easier to play them manually.

Sometimes I use MIDI guitar to record extended chords into Ableton. That often sounds unusual, thanks to the guitar-centric voicings. I once recorded a whole set of clips this way, and saved them for future use.

    ChordPolyPad’s brother: QuantiChord
    https://apps.apple.com/us/app/quantichord/id1439713799
Press any key and the selected chord is played.
