Kicking my youtube series off! - Outside the Synth 01 - Dynamic Drums
So after a lot of sitting on my hands, I finally bought myself a mic to begin my youtube channel. I've made a lot of little screen grab jams, but had yet to commit to a full video. The channel is motivation to improve my video editing and graphic design skills, and to serve as a place to document and share my discoveries with electronic instruments and music tech, and hopefully connect with like minded musicians and tinkerers.
The first in the series is examining a midi rack (drambo) I made to for easy sequencing of the Klevgrand apps. However, the channel is not going to be limited to just IOS music. I'll be filming experiments with both hardware and software, with an emphasis on modular and semi modular gear and workflows.
Anyway, this was my first time recording my voice for youtube, so go easy on me! Big thanks to @Gavinski who's been urging me for a looong time to get serious about this. If it wasn't for him reaching out to me about Slammer recently, this video probably wouldn't have ever been made! (not that the video is anything special, but it's a first step)
Well, here's the video! I've got a detailed description in the about section, as well as timestamps, so you can skip past the slightly rambling intro if you want.

Good luck, nice video!
Cool. Can’t wait.
Good stuff! Thanks for sharing it and good luck.
Nice work!
YES !!! Let's go @aleyas . Congratz bro ...... still trying to have some time to DM youuuuu
Are you on FB?
If so why not post it up in the dRambo group.
There are quite a few users there who would appreciate walk throughs like this.
Sounding good.
@aleyas Good work, really great! Will follow this.
Thanks for this, excellent vid right out of the gate! Well done
Rad! I was already subscribed to ya but now I’ll be following closer!! Good luck on the channel man
I’m sorry you got kicked off for a poorly worded headline
That's excellent and inspiring to use. Have to admit first time I saw your sequencer I brushed it off as too random for my taste but after having watched the video I realize I had no idea of what it actually did. Now I do, I'm super impressed and keen to implement into my workflow.
Thanks for making the video, they also take a lot of work!!
@aleyas Nice video. You are the new @Gavinski. He’s too corporate now ;P (I’m kidding Gavin)
Excellent video. count me in.
Thanks for the kind comments all!
I don't use FB, but now that you mention it, having one dedicated to the channel would be a great idea. Always keen to check out Drambo groups. I'll make an account today.
Yes bro! DM anytime, about Drambo or just to chat!
That's the challenge with making these racks for Drambo, trying to balance features and usability with the limited GUI elements available. Wish there was a way to hide specific knobs in compact mode, or to add some visual separation of different sections.
Hope you get some good use from it! I'm gonna add a 'tune midi note' knob with midi monitor next, to make it easier to use with other drum apps.
Looking forward to watching this later! Tutorials on how to do advanced stuff, are my favorite.
Cheers man! I have a video on granular synthesis for harmonization that I'll put out soon, which you may like. I remember last year you hooked me up with your midi dispatcher script that I also used for some granular purposes.
I'm so glad you finally did it @aleyas afyer my many months of urging. I always told you you would make a rad youtuber, I'm diving in now!
Much obliged shifu! 🙏 Although I know I'm about 3 weeks late on this one lol
Well done @aleyas 👍🏼
Great use of Drambo & groovy beats 💃🏻🕺
As they say in China,
闻而忘之; 见而记之;行而知之
I listen and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand
In other words: There's nothing like teaching something to make you learn it!
Nice! Great to see this type of content... experimental/modular/hybrid 👍
Looking forward to see more 😋
Very good. I think this series really fills a gap. We have a number of youtubers who deliver great reviews or app tutorials for iOS but I think we do not have a youtuber in our cute little community who focuses on production techniques. Well, I hope I did not miss someone and I also hope I got right what you are up to... I mean YT is full of production technique videos but none of their producers are iOS musicians, instead I see Ableton and Logic all over the place.
Lol my 1st ever use of Drambo! Yes I bought it on release but modular stuff of any kind frightens me...
Thank you so much for the sequencer and the video explaining it. Just set up a Cubasis template with your sequencer, Slammer and Ruismaker. I can see this getting a lot of use.
Good stuff. I added you to this list https://wiki.audiob.us/doku.php?id=youtube_ios_app_demos
You sir have won the internet today!! We need more like this!!
Hey, great job on the video! Congrats on kicking off the series!
I'm honored the project was one of your firsts! Please do let me know if the video wasn't clear on any details or if you have any questions, totally happy to help!
Appreciate it. Good company on that list ❤️
Thanks my man!
Great work @aleyas // subbed and will dive in
@aleyas Looking forward to seeing more of the series!
I have a question regarding one of your earlier videos:

You said "Gate counters receive gate from 2 separate sequences, played by 2 FM operators." Where did the 2 sequences come from? External sequencers?
Righto, it was indeed 2 external sequences. This was all generated from the left and right hand midi outputs of Piano Motifs. Basically all percussion events get triggered by gates from Piano Motifs. I used gate sequencers and gate counters to 'thin out' the sequences, and then retrigger modules multiply the now sparse signals, to time those ratcheting highest for example. I believe I was also using a gate counter to thin out the lefthand melody, by removing some steps so that only every X steps plays.
