  • This looks pretty cool too.

TEAC makes a really good component tape deck. They're still producing them new in 2021. The TEAC W-1200. Definitely on the higher end but it has pitch control and a quality tape mechanism.

I have a semi vintage component system in my living room that I’ve put together over the last couple years. Only used or 2nd hand thrift store type stuff; an Onkyo amp/receiver, an ADT graphic EQ and a Pioneer turntable.

A good tape deck is the only thing I don’t have, but I was thinking if I got one for here, I wouldn’t have the portability > @Svetlovska said:

    Yes it does!

  • Where are you all buying blank tapes in Europe? I used to get mine from Cassette Comeback, but he moved to Canada.

Yep. I’m about to pull the trigger on that very model. My old Technics deck bust a long time ago. I’ve still got many cassettes that I wanted to back up using my minidisc deck but never got around to it since the old deck broke. Nowadays getting back to this backing up thing, I won’t even need to use the minidisc deck. I can probably back up from this TEAC cassette deck onto the iPad or something.

  • What do those component decks go for these days?

I got a second-hand Technics for around €200 or so, with a warranty, from a local repair shop. It’s pretty great.

  • Anyone know UK sources of belts for Aiwa tape decks? I’ve got one that I need to repair but the only searches that come up are suppliers in Portugal, which is fine, but it’s rather not do the customs shuffle for something so small if I can avoid it - I’m not sure how precise I need to be with the sizing, or if most are generic sizes as there’s not much info about on them...

  • while i fully encourage supporting small time artist / etsy creators, just throwing it out there that these walkmen mods are very basic, and very easy to diy....

For those that may not know how awesome tape speed control sounds, heres an example. This is one i picked up at a swap meet for a buck.. only one knob, super simple. I have others where i added "keys" to play variable pitches. Gets really good at about the 30 sec mark.

    Excellent work!

    Link?

  • @ExAsperis99 heres one example

theres plenty more too on google / youtube. some are more complicated than others. you want a cheapo one like the walkmen. that has a variable resistor thats easy to replace with a wider range potentiometer. You can also do the voltage starve on the motor for some.

Its fairly simple, all you need is a soldering iron and some basic components / wire.

Still haven’t cracked this radio open to see if some speed control mods are possible with this one.

I did stumble upon this case of cassettes at a thrift store today. Several complete sets/volumes of “Greatest classical” music! Pretty much a gold mine of classical music here and all of these tapes are in pristine condition. This was someone’s finest collection!

    $2.15

  • I just ordered one of these:

    https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/854949337/the-tapeworm-speed-etc-modified-tape?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=The+TAPEWORM+Speed+etc+Modified+Tape+deck&ref=sr_gallery-1-1&organic_search_click=1&bes=1

I appreciate that in theory the DIY is simple enough, but the premium on this seems worth it to get something that is a known quantity. Not all these cheap decks are accessible enough to mod, according to some accounts I’ve read of people trying it and wrecking them, and you do need to have a basic level of understanding what you are looking at to muck about with it, which I don’t have.

On a related note, until recently it was hard/expensive to find the kit to do a professional job of making your own endless loop cassettes (a simple but fiddly job) here in the UK (mostly inflated prices for ‘vintage’ BIB kits), but something is clearly afoot, as I was able to get one of these easily:

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/154180453508

It’s a good quality solid metal block, and comes with a pack of one sided razor blades and a reel of splicing tape. Looking forward to getting warbly looptastic soon! :)

  • @Edward_Alexander i ordered it, but sent it to my studio address by mistake. I havent been going into the studio very much, but will swing by this weekend and pick it up!

  • @Svetlovska looks awesome! enjoy, and post some clips!

Wow - I didn’t know higher end cassette decks like the TEAC up there was still being produced. How do they sound? Once in a blue moon I come across a pack of new blank tapes at yard sales for almost nothing. Instant buy. I have a nakamichi mr1 and a mr2 that work. Great sounding decks.

Nice! I have a very similar splicing kit made by Realistic (Radio Shack), but the block is wooden. Or I did have one, I think it’s in one of about a dozen boxes of stuff in my attic. Ordering a new one online would probably be easier than climbing up there and digging out those boxes.

Totally agreed, modding these tape decks isn’t for everyone and that is a small price to pay really (less than a hundred bucks?) to have a ready made unit from a modder that stands behind his work.

Don’t forget to post some examples when you get you get everything together. I’m excited for you!

    Cool!

Looking forward to what you might discover. Knowing that these are still being produced and sold eases my fears of wrecking one if I try to mod it. I do have solder, an iron, a de-soldering sucker thing, and some electronics knowledge, where I could do little things like replace resistors or caps, and maybe add a potentiometer somewhere, but I’d have to be shown where exactly, so I’ll be waiting to see what you find.

  • @Edward_Alexander its either really simple, or complicated and not worth it. If its just a trim pot or voltage starve Pot, its super simple. ill take a look and get back to you soon!

My TEAC W-1200 arrived this week. Haven’t had time to get it set up in my component system yet. A job for the upcoming bank holiday next week, I think.
I love the way it’s so new but they made it look like it was made in the late 80s early 90s. Most of my component system is still going strong from the 80s when I first purchased. The TEAC will fit right in as if it was purchased with the other components 30-odd years ago! So cool.

Good idea! I’ll check in next week with a pic here! Haven’t bought a new component like this for decades! Forgot how exciting it is to unpack and examine...and that first smell of a fresh new electrical component...they always have that certain smell...yeah sniffing it was the first thing I did after welcoming it into its new loving home. Lol. It’s got me all fired up to look at more components again! 🤣🤣

😂 I once saw Dr. Mix do an unboxing of one of his new synths. The first thing he did when it was out of the box was sniff it excitedly. I thought, yeah, I’m not alone! 🤣
