Desktop DAWs

Indirectly AB related, at least if you use your iOS in a mixed environment with a desktop. I'm curious what your preferred DAW is. I have used Logic, Reaper, Garageband, Ignite, and Ableton. I just purchased a Behringer QX1202 mixer and got a copy of Tracktion 4 with it. Has anyone used that? Thoughts?

  • Logic Pro X here. iPad integration is great (Touch OSC, Logic Remote and so on ...)

No experience with that mixer or Tracktion, but I do have a number of DAWs. I'm partial to Sonar X3, FL Studio, and Ableton Live myself. The results from the KVR Reader's Choice Awards has Reaper as the best for recording (Honorable mention for Cubase) and Live as the best for Performance (Honorable mention for FL Studio). Results here

  • Traktion is interesting for a really simple workflow, the newest version is worth the upgrade if you like it. Personally I find it a litle too basic for my needs, and the included FX are only so so.

I use Ableton a lot here, and Studio One for client mixdowns. Occasionally I'll use Logic X too, but typically Live and S1 are my go tos.

  • Reaper although I haven't touched it in over a year.

  • Tracktion is a brilliant piece of software. The KVR Audio forum is a good place to learn more.

  • I use Ableton for about 90% of my music, Maschine for the other 10%.

  • I've used several in the past: Sonar, Reaper, FL Studio, etc., etc. I have specifically chosen the iPad realm over the laptop audio realm for an easier, more portable, more instantaneous way of doing music.

However, I still try to stay up on what's going on in that world. Tracktion was dead for a long, long time. a year (possibly two) ago, the original developers bought back Tracktion and have been furiously developing it again. It is very much alive and well today. It has a unique interface that you'll have to try to see if it works for you or not.

  • Studio One Professional on the mac. But I don't use it much anymore thanks to iPad.

Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

  • I try to stay up to date with the desktop DAW, my DAW of choice is Ableton Live 9 Suite and Presonus Studio One. I also have Logic X ,but don't use logic much .

  • Haven't fired up the PC for a while now but I used Mixcraft 6, which I loved for its ease of use. Ableton 8 got loaded but hardly touched.

  • SunVox and Renoise.

  • Reason 7 and Maschine

    +1 each for Renoise, Sunvox

Also I like Energyxt, and based on my experience with MTS Mobile, I just got MTS Pro Plus, which is quite a powerful piece of software...

  • Logic.

That's great news about traction coming back to life. Was really ahead of its time for a minute there.

  • I haven't had a chance to really dive into Tracktion yet, but the videos I've seen of it look pretty promising.

  • Those that fancy Renoise and SunVox might find something here: 12 tracker tips and tricks

  • @telecharge
Yeah that's a good piece- thnx, I think I checked it out in analog form, good to scan it again

  • I use Cubase, but mostly I use my iPad to record guitar sound, as Jam up pro is easier to control compare to Guitar Rig.... The guitar sound will go through Auria and export to Cubase...

  • I'm keen to buy an iMac with Logic as Logic seems to offer the most pro experience at a reasonable cost. It also seems to have a great VI and effects bundle. For those who have it but aren't using it, what limitations does it have?

Secondly, I want to continue using many of my favorite ipad music apps as sound sources. Do you take it out the headphone jack or can you use USB to get live audio from the ipad?

  • I've been going between Logic and Ableton. Started in Logic, but Touchable2 made me convert to Ableton. Logic Remote is a joke compared to T2. I'd love to use Logic through my iPad but the remote app is a little buggy still.

MacProVideo just posted a course going from Garageband (iPad) to Garageband (Mac) to Logic (Mac). I'll be interested to see if it's a workflow that can work for me.

  • @Schrodinger Logic's extremely reasonable cost has a bit of a dark side: no upgrade pricing. It's $200 per version period. Not bad at all compared to the total cost of ownership with other DAWs but something to keep in mind I guess. I've skipped X and will upgrade next time.

I don't use it often but not because it's limited in some way - it's really pretty incredible. I just prefer the iPad for most things. It does have good VIs and effects but the UI on some of the older synth/sampler instruments is pretty horrid. Way over designed—lots of eye candy that sort of obfuscates what should be basic parts of editing the instrument. I haven't spent enough time with them but whenever I open one I'm always like "wait, how the hell do I change it to sawtooth?" "Where is the tune knob?" They all have lots and lots of power/possibilities but as compared to something clean like Sunrizer or iMini, they kind of get in the way of themselves. I'm sure once you know them, you know them. I don't get that with the new VI and not with most of the effects at all - clean and usable and 'apple like'.

And yes, headphone jack works fine. If you have two interfaces (one for the ipad and one for the mac) that works too (that's what I do). Or you can check out the iConnectMIDI line of interfaces that allow you to connect them both and do all digital transfers.

  • @thesammiller

Yes the Logic Remote app is a joke but I use Touch OSC and Lemur and they work flawlessly on Logic, which is my one and only DAW

  • @TGiG

Yeah, Lemur works great with Logic and the TouchOSC Logic template is pretty much what the remote should be. I'll also use the Lemur LiveControl2 template for MIDI on Logic

  • Thanks @syrupcore. This helps a lot... I'm quite intimidated by the idea of another DAW as I've gotten very comfortable with Auria over the last year.
