Using a iPod RCA cable as a line in for iPad sampling apps

Ok so something pretty cool if you like sampling stuff. I have found that an iPod Video RCA cable designed for output will actually let you record on the iPad into apps like BeatMaker2, Samplr, etc..

So you just need to plug the yellow RCA (video) into the audio out RCA (red or white) on your TV, soundcard, stereo, or turntable's mixer. Then you can record audio as if it was from the mic, but it will be a line signal from your audio source.

It makes a very cool standalone setup with just a turntable and an iPad. Minimalist beat making, especially with iMPCPro and UVI Beathawk on the way :D

So heres what my cable looks like:
I plug the yellow into my sound source, and i haven't done this yet but i just realized it's perfect for then plugging the red/white into an amp or mixer for playback!

And heres a video of me using this to sample a youtube video into Samplr:
(still processing)

Hope this is useful to some on here.

    No worries :D

  • Nicely done sir!

  • Nice tip! I was searching through my 'cable box' the other day and noticed that I had that very cable and had never used it. Time to relocate it to my 'portable music' bag:)

Nice one! I figured a few people on here would have on lying around somewhere.
Just 1 more quick tip, make sure the volume output is quite on whatever your recording, it seems the iPad has a clipping filter or something like that. So instead of distorting if the input is too loud, it just registers silence (even though there is an input signal). Handy in the portable bag for sure :)

  • Thanks buska :D

  • For those who do not have this cable just go to radio shack and buy a red and white into an 1/8 inch jack. That is what use for sampling audio from places.... Cheaper most likely

Does this work with the ipad? the reason (as far as i can gather) that this works on ipad is the plug is broken into 3 sections instead of 2 on a standard red/white RCA cable. the third band is for video out on old ipods and the mic input uses the same band, so the video cable works as an input.

I have plenty of the red/white > 1/8 jack cables here and will try this tomorrow and confirm :D

  • I also use that same radio shack cable to pipe music into my computer tascam us-122 interface, from idevice. I do use an iPhone and iPod, but i cannot imagine it being different than iPad for such a basic connection. I have used cheap wires to hook everything together for a long time. That is one reason, while I love Audiobus and it makes me money, it's not the end all be all for music apps. With some experimentation you can do very interesting connections and mix everything together. My studio has a tv screen, regular multiple home stereo speakers, 70's turntable, cassette tape decks, and idevices all connected using a myriad of cables and interfaces. (Just yesterday while recording a podcast intro I was picking up a christian radio station. I thought it was my insane connections, but it turned out my Crybaby Wah was picking up the station... weird right?).

I actually wish I had a yellow video band on mine to start sampling video on the new video apps
