iRing FX/Controller (Freemium,Popup ads, Audiobus & IAA supported multieffect & MIDI controller app)
Ok so this one seems a bit more interesting then the other iRing app. It works without the iRing controllers, which makes it interesting for anyone looking for more effects to play around with. You can control two effects X/Y-style at the same time just using the touchscreen and your fingers. In addition to that there's two ribbon-lanes on the sides that can be configured to send out various MIDI data/notes (Edit: scratch that, the lines on the sides are just indicators that lights up if you configure any of the two available circles on the X/Y pad to send out MID) .
Pricings...
Filter Effect:
- Free
MIDI out controller(s):
- Free
There are 16 different effects available, divided into two packs with the pricing at:
Bundle One - 9 effects - $7.99
Bundle Two - 6 effects - $4.99
So a full unlock here is:
- $12.98
Alternatively it is possible to buy each effect separately for $0.99 per effect.
The filter effect is free to try, which I just did inside Audiobus with Audioshare just playing a loop from the input slot and iRing sitting in the effect slot (it uses the old Audiobus SDK at the moment though, hoping for a save stat compat update here). It works and sounds good to me. Also, the MIDI controller aspect of the app is FREE. One huge minus is NO LANDSCAPE mode, which is weird since it would work just as good from a design perspective.
Give impressions if you buy anything. Personally I'm most interested in if this has popup ads (I believe IK push out popup ads a couple of times per week to their older apps). Maybe IK can chime in here and tell us if this does popup ads?

You can use it to control apps like Loopy HD and Korg Gadget as demonstrated here, completely free: I saw that you didn't get popups but I do not know what will happen in the future, that is not a decision I make.

So most likely a "yes it will get popups". Thanks for being honest, and the quick response,
I dunno...I'm so not liking this whole popup deal. But on one hand this is a bit different being an fx app, so perhaps a popup won't ruin my day (like in Sampletank where it actually interrupts your playing), and I'm a total fx junkie!
Hey IKM, whatever about the popups, I think I'm gonna like this app (lol). I do have two feature request already tho that I think will be appreciated by a lot of folks (at least one of the feat)...
Landscape mode (=More sales, and makes it all easier to use obviously).
Ability to add few more then two effects, all with the same X/Y and "hold" functionality (This just makes sense for a DJ / Smashup effect unit. And would make it more in line with other high-end mash/smashup effect units like Sugar Bytes and others offerings).
Few more...
Ability to set BPM manually. And perhaps a clock sync (in). Edit: Already in there (hold the bpm button to enter a value).
Recording shorter automation-loops with the rings/dots like something ala Elephant Candys LiveFX app (which is very similar to this one in how you control multiple effects on an XY pad), Holderness Medias EchoPad is another app that can record the ring movements for some automation craziness.
Phaser effect needs tweaking, it's definitely not up to par at all.
Level meter on screen (now it's hidden under settings)
Anyone seen/heard any preview of the 6 effects in Bundle 2? They look like more special-effect oriented stuff, unlike Bundle 1, so I'm curious on how they sound (before bagging the whole thing)
Nintendo wii?

We'll take that level of success, so YES PLEASE!
And thanks for the suggestions an ChrisG. Good stuff.
I was thinking secret decoder rings. Hehehe!
Looks a bit dicey to me...

Ban hammer !!! ...for a really bad one liner lol...
Ok so I purchased both available bundles today. Will let anyone know if it indeed do get the popup ads, but so far I haven't seen any (they do only seem to happen couple of times per week or so though so there's still times for those little joy killers to show up).
Anyway from some quick messing around, this seems like a really nice first entry into the iOS dj/smashup multi effects category (think LiveFX and Turnado to get an idea what most of the effects are like). I haven't delved into anything related to tempo timings etc yet, but should work ok seeing as you can tap to get the bpm or hold it to enter bpm manually (with decimal values). Compared to something like Turnado, Effectrix or birdStepper, this one is quite limiting in regards to the nr of effects you can have going at the same time, which would be only 2. Hoping to see a few more effect rings available here, even if it doesn't necessarily goes hand in hand with the external iRing controller thingys. I got 10 fingers here IKM, let me use at least a few more! Oh, and no way to get any kind of automation going, either internally or via incoming MIDI, from what I can tell, which is another thing that would be a welcome addition. And again, landscape mode mmkay?
Edit: By the way, a huge plus here is that the app is universal, unlike the others. Currently that makes it the only available option if you want a multi effect unit like this on your iPhone/iPod.
Edit 2: The only effect I don't like here is the phaser. It could really use some tweaking, it just sounds wrong, and introduces clipping really easy. Other then that one I think the effects are really solid (for this type of fx unit). Been messing around for an hr or so, and it's a mucho fun unit to use for sure. Oh and btw, if anyone is thinkin of printing out copies of the iRings and use them as controllers, you can just forget it. You need to scan a QR code or enter the serial nr for the iRing "hardware", which is = lol, but whatever, it works just as well without them so..
Oh and btw, if anyone is thinkin of printing out copies of the iRings and use them as controllers, you can just forget it
Haha, I wonder who thought of that?
I gotta admit that I did wave an iPhone with a picture of an iRing on it, infront of the iPad just to see if anything happened. The options for activating the iRing and camera are greyed out under settings, and I could´nt first figure out why that was (hence me waving and iphone infront of the iPad), until I checked the quick start and account section where it becomes clear that you need the actual packaging to activate and use it. That said, people who buys into all this motion iRing controller thingys need to keep the packaging around, and you can´t like give the rings away or sell em either since it checks against IKs servers (just like a software license I guess?). So that´s a big minus on how they set it all up, me thinks.
Sheesh, really? Hate to suggest it, but if they are that worried about it, they should have just charged for the APP, let people make paper rings if they want to, and maybe include a code when you buy the ring to get the app for free.
@IKmultimedia
On the Crush effect (which btw I think your guys really nailed the sound and range on,love it!), there's a "Boost" parameter on the Z axis. What exactly is that one supposed to do? I would guess boost the volume going by the name, but I can't seem to get it to do anything to the sound?
Also, more of a feature request I guess, the two twist up/down effects basically samples a small portion of the audio and repeats it really fast to make these "drops" or whatever right. But, I'd really like to have a much wider parameter range on horizontal axis, it's IMO still way too fast when you have it all the way to the left. Which basically makes the two effects identical, and they act and sound like Bebot synth app and other similar. Those FXs could be so much better with just a little tweaking from your side.
And again, please take a look at the phaser effect, it's either really really muddy like a low pass filter been slapped across, or way too bright using the z axis like a high pass filter been slapped on top. It really needs tweaking.
A tiny thing, but thought you guys might wanna change in an update...In settings, the audio background option uses "Amplitube" as the name for the app.
Thank you for the suggestions, can you contact support about the boost issue (as well as issues with the Phaser)? That way they will get these in the system and be able to quickly shuttle it to the dev team if it is a global issue: http://www.ikmultimedia.com/support
About registering the iRing units themselves, it is just like registering any other product so once you do so it should be tied to your IK account just fine and be very unobtrusive and the serial should thus remain in your IK User Area from there on in.
+1 Zymos
Registering is simple and generating codes (really Apple, not us anyway so that adds more to manage on top of it all) to put in boxes is a very complex nightmare when you manufacture and sell as many accessory units as we do globally. Speaking of manufacture, these are one of our products made in Italy at our own factory facility in Modena.
App devs get a limited amount of codes with each update, so you can't use those for the purpose suggested either. We feel we came up with a more than reasonable and convenient method, I'm sorry it doesn't suit your needs.
And speaking of app devs now, we also have an SDK available to any developers interested: http://www.ikmultimedia.com/iringsdk/
After giving it more thought, I'll admit that charging for the rings and issuing the code is the best option for profit and piracy. I do think it is cool that IK doesn't outsource their labor, kudos! I don't perform live, I don't produce electronic dance music, and I defiantly do not DJ (ha!) so, even though the thought of the rings were cool, I couldn't imagine any use for them.
That is until I browsed their site. Being able to control midi on AB and mac/PC I immediately ordered the rings. I had no idea!
I know the App Store will be overwhelmed with junk, games, and toys, but I do think we will be able to produce to amazing sounds with these tools. I'm planing on midi glissando and theremin!
I can't wait to try these bad boys out and I can't wait to see what other developers make with them!
Theremin FTW. Hadn't even considered that.
I have no desire to use the rings, but I am anticipating code bloat when devs include the library that comes with the SDK. That means being able to run even less apps in my recording setups...
:P
@PaulB, their static library is 7MB, so not terrible (I only just grabbed it to get you that information
[Edit] Oh wait, the OpenCV (computer vision) library in there is 64MB (5 architectures), so a built version won't use that much space.... but still, there will be some impact.
Being static libraries, if I have 3 apps loaded that all support the iRing, then I suspect I'll have 3 copies of the libraries loaded for a gimmick I'm never going to use, true?
True, but also being static libraries, there's a good chance not all of OpenCV will be linked in at build time. I will judge for myself how gimmicky it is when they ship me some. Time will tell whether any apps end up using it.
@ChrisG. Ability to set BPM manually. And perhaps a clock sync (in). Edit: Already in there (hold the bpm button to enter a value).
Where is this BPM button?
@jfeheley said:
Next to the "Hold" button, down on the right side. It says "Tap" instead of "BPM" for some weird reason (we all know to check if tap works, IKM).
By the way, when I opened it today to check the above,,,
I GOT A POPUP AD!
What the fuck IKM...
@ChrisG I had the wrong iRing app. BPM button is quite obvious with correct iRingFX app.
