  • Could be a dead or faulty battery, how long have you left it plugged in for?

  • edited May 2021

Hooking it up to a computer should wake it up even if the battery is 'dead'.

I'm on an iPad Air 2 (iPadOS14.5.1) and I'm quite impressed it's still going strong...
...sure the battery doesn't last super long and some apps can choke the CPU but still...

  • It's happened to me before with my Air 2 when the battery has completely gone flat and it's not taking it's charge easily and I thought it was dead too, but leaving it plugged in for a few hours gets the charge enough to start it up again. My air 2 battery is pretty dead now and it needs plugging in all the time.

My 2017 is hilariously crapping out now. Once it gets down to around 30%-40% it just starts counting down to zero within minutes and will even go down by 2% at a time... can just sit and watch it... mocking me...

It must be fully dead I think I’ve left it on charge for 12 hrs with still no joy. Ever the photo isn’t, however, maybe the charger was bad…

Per your earlier question it had sat flat for months…

As an aside, I still have my first iPad, (which the first iPad, an iPad One…) and It has sat for far longer uncharged, and has had way more charging cycles…and it still charges, and holds a charge, like a boss.

  • leave iPad on all night .. Next day.. take a hair dryer.. warm up the back of the iPad.. dont cook it.. or you will soften the glue which the battery is connected to?. Plug in iPad on the charger.. if it comes on, then the thermo on the battery is shot.. battery needs a replacement.. If it works, you need to use it with the charger always connected & switch on.. i had this on my AIr 1.. but gone to Apple heaven, as i dropped it last Christmas.. Shattering completely the screen.. But i did this for over a year so i could use it.. The temperature effect the battery operation.. Now no iPad.. & i cannot afford another one.. I can get a powerful Laptop for half the price of a iPad.. Why i stopped making music on iPad.. I been more successful with what im doing now.. Only pain, is that i was once an App- holic.. so i wasted shit loads of money on app i dont use.. where now im making a nice little bonus income from my Window Laptop, as i can do more than use my finger on a touch screen.. im even mixing & Mastering for people on my little lappie.. & making a little income from this.. People who know me here.. knows what i mean, especially if you like Disco/Soulful house.. Being an Old Audiobus old boy... ;)

    Worse case, replace battery.

  • Having replaced a battery/LCD/digitizer on an iPad mini 2 myself about a year ago, I wasn’t able to achieve full functionality out of the do it yourself process. I’d recommend having it done by an experienced repair service if the cost is worth it for you.

  • @Littlewoodg Could it be that simultaneously the battery ran to zero and your charger port went wonky? Several of my iOS devices have charging ports that require jiggling before actual charging happens and for the ones that go down to zero charge there's no instantaneous way of knowing if they're getting juice.

If you've not already tried: push the charging cable in firmly then angle it left or right with a bit of light pressure (holding finger on cable) and keep an eye out for the battery graphic to appear onscreen confirming there's a connection.

  • Also if you haven’t, try some compressed air in the port to clean it...worth a try.

My 2017 12.9 is pretty good still, although I’m plugged in to my interface most of the time I’m using it so it’s not regularly depleting battery much. Still wish Apple would stick bigger batteries in the pro models and make em a bit thicker.

Thanks for the notes, I’m goin to try the hairdryer and the jack wiggle, batt replacement…hope springs eternal

  • Good luck

Thanks. “Hope is a feathered thing”…
And battery replacement though Apple is $99

  • It‘s well worth the 99 bucks - I bought a damaged Air-1 for cheapo, had to open it, messed sides and cut through the digitizer cable... a few minutes later the glass broke by just a bit of too much force. Opening the thing is a challenge alone and needs a lot of routine o:)

  • Any luck with this @Littlewoodg ?
