iMazing backup questions
I am looking at buying iMazing to make it easier to manage the data on my various devices and have a few questions in case anyone here is using it:
- Does the application backup/restore functionality still work, i.e. can I still grab a copy of an app from the store and save it away in case it disappears in the future?
- Is it possible to manually back up and restore IAP? It looks like the app gives you access to the filesystem so am I naive in thinking I might be able to back up some folders from an app and at some point in the future be able to restore IAP simply by copying them back?
- If you can get an app back onto the device after it has been removed from the app store then does “restore purchases” for IAP and function unlock still have a chance of working if Apple host the assets?
I would like to hear of any positive/negative experiences people have had with this app, especially those who use it a lot in their workflow. Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. I’ll need to work out now how many licenses I will need...
I have the free version of iMazing, and I've been doing some backups, mostly before updating the OS.
Does the free version fully restore these backups, or should I buy the full version?
@MisplacedDevelopment Access to app specific data which is not shared by the app itself (including the state of IAP) can only be done by making a full backup and exploring the resulting archive.
Only a jailbreak can give you direct access without all the hassle.
It's also one of the reasons why I think that apps need various mechanisms to access app related data. Some like iCloud, some like Dropbox, some need WebDAV, others want a web interface or ftp client/server to exchange data over the network.
You can make a backup of any app as an IPA archive, and then you can install this on any new iOS device which uses your same Apple account.
Even when these apps completely disappear from the store, it doesn’t matter if they also disappeared from the download section in your purchase history.
But it’s important to note that for doing this, it’s not enough with having a backup of your iOS device.
Let’s say that an app completely disappears, from the store and from the list of previously purchased apps. If you have this app installed in an iOS device, you can’t extract the app from this device, moving it to a new device.
The only way of doing this is if you previously saved this as an IPA file, downloading a backup of the app directly from the Apple servers.
So if you want to be 100% sure that in the future you can move your previously purchased apps to new iOS devices, even when they completely disappear from Apple servers, you need to download the IPA to your computer while they still are in the download section.
When I purchase an app, the first thing that I always do is to connect the iPad to my MAC, downloading the IPA archive in an external hard disk.
So as far as this app remains compatible with newer versions of iOS, I can always install it again in other devices using my account. Even if they disappear from Apple servers.
Thank you for this great explanation. I know that users sometimes hope they can "copy" an app from one device to another. You make clear that you can only download an app from the AppStore, but iMazing can then install it on a device.
But I have an additional question. Lately (since iOS 10?), when you install an app, you only receive selected components adapted to your device. This particularly affects graphics adapted to screen size and shape (think iPhone, iPad, Air, Pro). Do you know if the
ipa
file downloaded by iMazing includes all components, or just those for your current device?@uncledave, I think that the IPA archives contain all the necessary files for installing it in any iOS device, in the same way as a DMG file in Mac contains the installers for the M1 and Intel processors. The only thing to consider is that this IPA file will be signed with your user account, so it can only be installed on iOS devices running the same Apple ID account of the original purchase.
All of that said, this is a simple supposition. Maybe a developer who has read the Apple documentation can share more light in this subject.
is it possible to chose a backup location on an external HD?
iMazing let’s you put your backup folder anywhere.
But AFTER i do the backup or can i chose before even starting to backup?Moving the files afterwards is not a big deal but the HD in my M1 has the same size like my ipad (i regret now that i was a little stingy) which makes backup a little…complicated
You set up the default backup folder to be wherever you want. Once you have selected it, you don’t have to touch the setting again.
thatˋs great,thanks👍
Just wanted to bump this because I noticed on December 2nd iMazing released an update that supports ios15. You don't have to do a subscription at all. You can do 3 devices for lifetime for $49.99. Easy decision to purchase this just as app insurance. I have 3 iDevices on the same icloud accoutn right now and if I want to add more I can buy another 3 device block. Seems fair to me and they seem committed to keep it updated.
Testing right now on Catalina, I'll report back.
Seems to be working well so far with my iPhone XR and IPad Pro 4th gen. Excited about this because now I can clean out some apps without risking losing any of them if at a later date I change my mind. Really trying to thin down my choices and go deeper in fewer apps this coming year.
Make sure you download those apps in iMazing. An iPad backup is not enough.
Thanks didn’t catch that part! Don’t have my iPad with me but hoping I can batch download my apps.
Pretty sure you cannot share your apps from the installed iPad copies to iMazing. iMazing downloads the files from the App Store and stores them on your computer. The magic part is that you can install them on the iPad directly from iMazing.
It does download them.
Their website says, “ Any app you own and which is still on the App Store can be added to your app library from here - simply type the app's name in the search field, and click the download button to add it.
If you have not purchased or acquired the app before, the download will fail and iMazing will suggest you get the app from the iOS App Store first. No need to download it to your device, just to purchase it, or 'Get' it if it is free.”
Just wanted to clarify for anyone else reading that it seems that you can only back up apps that still exist in the App Store or that you have a .IPA file for which works fine for me but may not work well for anyone else trying to backup apps that are no longer available in the App Store.
It doesn’t matter whether it is available for purchase in the App Store if you own it. Many apps no longer visible in the App Store can be downloaded if you purchased them. When Aphelion stopped appearing in the store and stopped showing up in the purchased apps list, iMazing could still see it. Some things do become unavailable but not all.
Yes that’s correct @uncledave.. as I discovered while trying to backup MixBox (1.2 installed on my iPad).. if I would’ve downloaded it before they put out the first new version (1.3), I would have the 1.2 backup to install.. alas, I waited too long and the option to get 1.2 had gone..
iMazing grabbed the latest version of MixBox (1.3.3) and so I’ll be keeping 1.2 on my iPad as long as I can.. I don’t see a need to update it as it works just fine..
Long story short.. iMazing will grab the latest version of an app.. NOT the (possibly older) version that you may have on your iPad/iPhone.. so backup the version you want to keep before it changes..
One bonus I had during my last iMazing session was finding and installing WaveStorm.. I thought it was a complete goner.. it didn’t show up under my purchased apps anywhere.. BUT it was somehow still showing in my “App Library” within iMazing.. 🤷♂️ installed it and ALL IAPs (I had bought) were ready to go.. 👍
Anyone know where iMazing stores the app files on the Mac?
Thanks.
Isn’t just search for .ipa files in Finder?
I don't think so. When I do that, I get a list of the apps that I downloaded back in the day when you could download with iTunes.
But apps downloaded today with iMazing are not in that list.
Sorry…
I’m away from my Mac for the moment, but I can check this later…
If you sort the search result for .ipa to show Recent, what happen then?
Are you talking about apps download with their app management? If so, they are downloaded to the folder you set as the Library. You can find out what it is in the iMazing preferences.
My iMazing Preferences is greyed out. Can't select it.
Maybe because I'm using the free version?
iMazing looks good - I guess I should delte an app and try to restore it to check that it is all working properly.
No, preferences should not be greyed out in the free version.
@Simon - default library location on a Mac should be: /Users/
username
/Library/Application Support/iMazing/Library, I believe.
