@CapnWillie dude…. Man you have worked so hard on your craft. Imagine the power of the shiny new M1 IPad Pro in your capable hands!!!!!
Nudge nudge…. 😁
@Edward_Alexander the storage is probably the most useful part of that upgrade! Also, don’t you get extra RAM with the 1TB version?
Quick question; I've been on holiday so big late to the party..
The WWDC / Apple Love-in...
has this been and gone now?
And what were the results?
Any hint of Logic or wotnot? (I doubt it but thought I'd ask)
Other thing I'd mention.. I use lumafusion once in a blue moon and output via HDMI (iPad pro 2018).
--when you have TV out selected, you can preview your edit, on the TV, while the editing window on the iPad, goes blank. It's either one screen or the other for any video content. Bit limited.
Literally my fav mac. Quad core. Dirt cheap. Runs baremetal out of the box. Great little expansions for a VEP rig with next to 0 footprint. Fit 2 of em in a 1u chassis from sonnet (which you can pick up on ebay for about 70$).
I use BM3 as my main daw on the new 1TB 12.9. Super happy with it. All the Projects which crackled on the 2018 pro are now super clean and i can use 30-50% more tracks.
I’ve got my iPad Pro (2017, 10.5 and 256gb) and it’s still working perfect for my use. I even just scored an Otterbox Defender for way less then normal to keep it in shape. At home I use it with a Camera Kit to make a connection with my ES-9 or Zoom soundboard and it’s simply plug and play. Even my iPhoneX which I use for 3+ years is as new and in an Otterbox case, still works perfect. The only thing I upgraded quite recently is my MacBook Pro from mid 2012, last weekend bought an Air (M1) for that. It’s a bit quicker and I can update my OS and run several other apps. The absence of a headphone jack on the newer iPads + current pricing doesn’t motivate me to upgrade to another iPad right now. Shame because iPads definitely have a good use/deserve a place in music and audio production.
Ironically, as far as I can understand the criticism to the new M1 iPad Pros if you are using this for image or video editing, music production is in the other hand one thing that it vastly benefits from the increased specs.
I picked a normal 2020 iPad this spring, without even knowing that I will use this for music purposes. And at the end, it was impossible to develop any of my music ideas due to its processor and RAM limitations. The 90% of my AUM sessions will always end with a crash after peaking the DSP to its limits through an abuse of effects in each channel. Sometimes, a single channel with FRMS and some heavy demanding effects like the ones by Eventide or Velvet Machine will take the DSP above 100%, with the consequent crash. It was impossible to record live sessions.
Because music production with AUv3s units and IAA programs working in the background is currently the only real multitask use case for iOS in which you can push to the limit every core and GB of RAM, by simply opening multiple instances and programs in the background.
Now, with an iPad Pro M1, 8GB RAM, 256 GB of internal memory, I haven’t had a single crash, it doesn’t matter how many audio channels with tens of effects I put in AUM.
For me, this is the only thing that matters with these new iPads. I’m not a specs guy looking comparison charts. The only thing that I care is if it will be powerful enough for my particular use cases. And until now, I haven’t had a single problem, everything has been smooth and with zero crashes. Even with some demanding apps like Bitklavier, that will vanish every 5 minutes in my last iPad.
I love my 11” M1/8/256 , it’s super fast and stable, not a single issue. It stays cool even on big projects, and I can certainly feel a big power improvement over A12 and A10. Even bigger AUM projects can run stable at 64 buffers latency, it’s not that often that I have to change this setting, if ever. Screen is very bright for exterior use. iPad Pros fast 120 Hz screen allows for much faster on screen playing, like with Xequence AU pads and keys for example. I’m super happy with my purchase, coming from AIR 3 and 7 Plus. I don’t think it’s overhyped, as all that power is also future proof, and it will certainly extend that use range when you don’t need to freeze any track and keep producing, it has certainly changed the way I use AUM and midi sequencing apps like Helium or LK for example. USB-C port allows to give power to your audio interface without any dongle and that’s a big advantage. Audio on USB-C to Jack is also super stable and very good conversion quality, I keep it attached to my Apple Earbuds or ATH-50MX all the time. With big battery life and fast charging (30W gives 110 mn full charge) it’s comfortable to use.
I wonder if we've now got enough power at hand to post SWAM instruments in polyphony.. hmmm (M1 I mean).
(Like you can on desktops for instance).
I'm still toying with the idea of buying the strings bundle (£70) ... When I listen back to isymphonic sounds, after using SWAM for a bit, I'm amazed at how much better the audio modeling option sounds ...
Anyway...
I’ve had no problem on the 12.9 iPad Pro 2018 using the LumaFusion timeline and editing while simultaneously previewing the video output on a 4K monitor (not sure what resolution is being output). I wonder if you need to change your settings or HDMI interface…
Oh ok. Not sure what, if any settings u can change.. this is iOS we’re talking about! :-p
I’m not using any interface as such, just an hdmi cable straight from a usb-c hub attached to the islab.
iPad Air 4 is looking good... 256g...
I have been weighing Air vs Pro lately too. The Air is almost ten months old with the Pro being a little over two months.
The Pro is only 160$CAD more here and it doubles the ram to 8gb over the Air which has 4gb plus the CPU single core is slightly faster at 1712 with the Air at 1584. The ram bump would probably make it more worthwhile longterm.
I guess iPadOS 15 will make the new Pros shine.. I guess it will be wise to sit out a few and let my iPad v6 continue...
Thanks..
Also on an iPad v6. Recently been testing specs aside to find out what I really would ”need” besides the pure fun factor of a fast tablet. I found I can run 5x Model D and a drum track in Zenbeats but adding a sixth track makes the CPU choke and crackling starts. I can run 9x ZC1 and drum track and 13x (!) SM2 and drum track before choking the CPU… not that bad for an old A10.
I will try to wait and see what shows up in September from Apple. On the table right now is either an iPad v8 or Air but that might change depending on what Apple comes up with in a month or two.
I probably won’t take the Pro/M1 plunge yet since I can’t justify the added cost, I believe I will be well off for years to come just getting the Air with its A14 chip and 256 GB or the budget version 8 128 GB…

I am using a 5th gen right now (pretty much the same), had a 10.5 pro before. But yah I was considering the exact same things as you waiting for the 9th to see if it got an A13 (now sounds unlikely though?) or more storage or ram or... something not just cosmetic. But anyway Apple Canada is going to apparently kick off a limited time interest free payment plan deal tomorrow so my plan is now potentialy changed where I am considering a Pro again. It is not so much that I want a lot of synths but I find exploring the Fab Filters, Tone Boosters and Fac Transient on just about everything is super important to me now.
