Apogee One

So, I finally ordered my A-D/D-A converters for my Air, decided on the One and it arrived yesterday. Got things up and running and, well, I've got my work cut out for me!
:-D
Spent countless hours researching online on best bang for buck. I'm a little leery about it's build quality, but I'm trying to appreciate that they designed it to be light for transport. So far, I'm not blown away by the sound, but I need to take more time on that aspect. I only had an hour to work with it, but got a chance to try recording bass guitar straight to Auria(which worked fine) as well as Crystalline(which was sort of mind blowing). I have to get a mic stand and try percussion and vocals very soon.

  • I too purchased the apogee one after exhausting research and consultation with trusted people. I also posted here and got some solid replies.
The cables are my worry but I try and be careful and treat them with a light touch.
I never appreciated the sound until I got to five or six tracks. Then I started to notice how the separation on instruments and clarity started to be apparent and the overall mix was improved. I realized my vocals were there in all their weaknesses and had to do a better job because the ONE would expose my flaws. I purchased better headphones also [Audio Technica M30 } which were required to hear just what the One was doing.
Overall I'm very happy with the One. My wife and others have commented on the improvement in my recordings especially live played acoustic guitars and vocals.
    Hope this helps,
    Don

  • I got a One and am very pleased with it. I think the mic is where it shines the most. If you're recording into Auria, apply some compression to your vocal track as I find it helps for monitoring and sounding more stable. Also, make sure to download and use Maestro, which is the app that helps control the output and levels for the One, along side with Auria. As for guitar/bass, they sounds awesome when playing through jam up or bias before heading into Auria. If you have Saturn, that'll do the trick too.

You'll figure things out and love your purchase.

I have the one as well and am really enjoying it. I also have an alesis io4. I too thought I wasn't blown away by the one's sound quality, until I listened through the internal headphone amp of the ipad and the alesis (neither of which sound bad), then heard the difference- there was much more subtlety and separation with the apogee, and the image was definitely wider. Someday I'd like the quartet, that day is not today though. Well, I'd like it today...

  • thanks for the tips and encouragement everyone! :0)

especially glad to get feedback on the separation aspect of a mix. I bought AT M50's to monitor with my Air. I'll be using the internal mic for awhile. I'd like to do the EV RE320 & Cloudlifter package Sweetwater is offering, but I have to justify that.
