AudioBus + Roli + GeoShred + Noise + Loopy HD... What is the best way

Hi everyone,

I have a Roli + iPad Pro 2020, and I like to improvise using the setup I gave on the title.

The thing is, the CPU, especially when using GeoShred gets filled very easily and I hear cracks and missed notes occasionally.

My quesion is; what is the best way to use AudioBus. Let me explain:

  • Should I add the Roli as a midi input and send it to GeoShred (and Noise) within AudioBus, or simply use GeoShred as an audio input (with Roli sending the messages to GeoShred app)? Does that make any difference?
  • Should I add (by pressing the + sign) multiple apps on the same "line" on AudioBus then send to Loopy (e.g. GeoShred+Noise --> X --> Loopy HD ) or have separate lines for them. Would that make any difference?
  • The iPad is known to optimize performance for the app that is currently being used and dumping a lot of the apps in the background. Does that mean that I would hear less cracks with AudioBus focused or GeoShred focued?
  • Lastly, I use Patterning 2 for having some beats to follow. Should I add this to AudioBus also, or have it running in the background? Would that make a difference?

I hope my questions are clear. I am trying to find the best practices for using AudioBus so that there is least CPU usage. Maybe none of the things I ask would make any difference, or maybe one of them has been proven to be the best way to go about this.

So I decided to ask the community :)

Thank you all for your help in advance!

  • Nice question. I don't have any sage advice but partially replying to make sure your question doesn't disappear in all the noise. Someone around here probably has an answer for you. Or at least some paths to investigate.

I don't have a ROLI device and don't use GeoShred or Noise so I'm probably not much help but a few thoughts...

    1. AudioBus is almost certainly not the problem. It's very very efficient. I'd use it as an audio/midi router to whatever extent you like.
    2. The ROLI likely sends out a TON of MIDI events. Can any of those be filtered out before sending them on to apps? I get that part of the reason to use a ROLI is the ability to send all those events. :) Still, make sure Patterning, for instance, isn't bothering with trying to process them all.
    3. Have you tried using the audiobus "Clear Session" button in the lower right corner? And/or restarting your ipad?
    4. Have you tried adjusting your audio buffer size? Sometimes, bizarrely, folks find that lowering the buffer size has a positive impact on noise/glitching. Some apps just prefer certain sizes it seems.
    5. Short of a more learned answer from another forum member, I'd try eliminating items from your setup to see which has the largest impact on your machine performance. RE item 1 above: again, I doubt AB is the problem but it's worth removing it as a part of your debugging here.
