Reason 11

Well, i took the plunge, and bought an upgrade from Reason 10 to 11, just because i hate the piano roll/editor window.
Now i can work in Ableton and Bitwig with Reason. No more headaches, I hope.
What are your experiences?

  • I don't own it but the new Friktion instrument looks great.

  • I like the sounds in Reason. (Don't like the new subscription model they're pushing, though). I think they are bringing our Reason 12 which has zoom function and hi-res graphic interface. Like you not a great fan of the piano roll/ editor. I use the VST plugin in Reaper - works well for what I do. Never been able to get the plugin to work in Zenbeats desktop though - odd, as it works in all other DAW's.

  • Finally reason 12 will have high definition graphic🤟🤟
    Huge fan.

  • I quite like the piano roll editor. I suppose I’ve had Reason since version 2, so I’m used to it.

  • I did the same. Upgraded to 11 just now to use vsts. I didn’t have much interest is anything 11 or 12 have to offer functionality wise, but it seemed like the right move to upgrade to be able to work in Ableton.

I guess they're aware of all the users who won't buy into a subscription:

  • Maybe OT but I didn't take the plunge and have a Reason 10 license to sell. If interested, DM me.
So many things to love with Reason - instruments are great and very fun workflow. But, always get stuck with the less than ideal handling of control surfaces and midi routing 🤨

I’ve been waiting so long for a hi-res interface, if they finally make it scalable and zoomable I’ll probably buy the next version.

  • i love reason, but as a collection of instruments not as a daw.

Damn it’s really going down huh, might have to jump back on the Reason train
    September 1st

  • I hope i'm in the bandwagon for an upgrade to 12. They definitely need an sampler upgrade. The 2 samplers they have, are a hassle to program and not good for workflow in my opinion.
One of the reasons i upgraded, is that i want to use a good wavetable synth. I love Europa and it's easy to program. I also love the drum racks.
90 Euro is a good upgrade to have so much stuff to use in another DAW. I see it as a cheap instrument/effect AU/VST bundle.

Their subscription offer sucks. They should have copied Bitwig’s 12 month upgrade plan

I have to confirm that. Thought about purchasing 11 but then found out it's not the real deal, the most important instruments are missing from the package. wtf.

That's exactly what I was interested in but that'll force you into subscription.
Not so bad if I wanted to use Reason just for a few months but useless if I'm going to stick with it.

  • Of all the daws I’ve tried, Reason has my favorite factory instruments - Especially Grain and Complex-1 .. Never really fit me using it as a DAW though, but 11’s VST rack was a no-brainer upgrade for me. It’s a phenomenal sound design toolset.

You don’t need to sign up for a subscription though, you can buy it outright on sale for $279 right now , the full version. In my case I just updated from intro for$209. Reason + has a few more instruments and effects but the regular full version has all the main instruments and effects I need and of course comes with Reason Rack.

Yeah that's what I hoped for but then I've seen the list of instruments that come with Reason 11 now. 😢

  • I'd really like to know what their endgame is. I have a feeling that R12 might be the last version before they switch to subscription-only

It'll certainly depend on how well Reason users buy into the idea of subscription and how many prefer to own a package for a fixed price. For guys who want new material regularly, the subscription looks good but not everybody is like that.

At the current subscription price, buying a perpetual license + instruments that are not included will be cheaper in the long run. And you keep everything you've bought. And you can sell and transfer your Reason license if you want.
So I doubt they will have many subscribers. Less than 20% I'd say

For short-term use, it's probably not that bad and I can see why would some users would prefer a monthly subscription.
Though it really sucks that you have to be always online and can lose access if they experience technical difficulties

  • As for subscription, i hope they don't do it.
Reason, as for other DAW's is a tool to get things done, but i think the market-share is small in comparison with the great DAW's like Logic and Ableton.
I see it as a Carpenter that needs tools. A professional carpenter need the latest tools, for production-effiecent work. It's an investment with a return. A hobby-carpenter tries to keep as long as he could with his tools, until something breaks. I see Reason more in the corner of hobby/artist than professional/producer, although there are some artist who work with Reason.
One of the reasons i switched from Adobe products to Infinity for graphics, because i'm no Pro.

  • Wasn’t the subscription model brought in after the original owner/ dev sold to a VC company?

  • Does anyone know if Reason+ can run authorized without internet access? Does CodeMeter for Reason work with Reason+? I checked the FAQs but couldn't find a definitive answer.

Since Reason+ is the subscription-based alternative, the note below (from the FAQs link) doesn't look promising:

Note that only fully purchased Rack Extensions can be authorized on your computer/Ignition Key. Trial, Subscription and Rent-To-Own Rack Extensions always require that you log in using Internet Verification.

Interesting. That basically out-rules using Reason on stage and at times of internet outages... which are probably rare in Sweden.

It checks your subscription status on start and every time you open a project, so Internet connection is required

  • Thanks @yug.

They need to update their licenses and authorization FAQs.

Note that Reason+ requires Internet connection for running Reason and the Companion apps.

That was the plan, not in Sweden though.

  • Slightly OT, but as much as I like Bitwig's 12-month upgrade cycle plan.... as a recent convert to Bitwig I really don't feel I've got the typical value for money in updates over this last 12 months. Very little has changed since I last paid them in June 2020.

Yeah... I know... COVID. But still.

I still love Bitwig though, and will continue to support development... but now I'm also contemplating upgrading my ancient Reason license to v11 and getting v12 for free in Sept.

Yes, but you can cancel the plan and renew it only when they release new features you'd really like to have. Basically, it's a traditional perpetual license, they just make you pay more for updates (every year vs every major version) - but you don't have to, you can just keep using the version you have
