Neo 90s House Produced in Gadget, Mastered in Cubasis 3

I call this Neo 90s House rather than Future House since I use more traditional 90s House drums.

So here we have a cheesy happy little melody I came up with the other day. I decided to set it to a 90s House groove with some modern ideas and production values popped in here and there. Once again, this was 95% produced in Gadget, with the other 5% being mastering in Cubasis 3.

Okay, about where the sounds came from, the drums are Recife, and the impacts and record scratch are Amsterdam. The M1 Organ Bass is actually Marseille, and the sub bass layered underneath the M1 Organ is Chiangmai.

The lead in the A section is 5 synths layered - Chiangmai, Montpellier, Dublin, another Chiangmai, and Marseille Toy Piano (you know, for that "childhood" sound).

There's an M1 Piano slightly hidden in the background for a bit of extra rhythm, which actually comes from Marseille. The hi strings and string pad are both Marseille (the hi strings are slow strings with the attack all the way to 0ms, and the string pad comes from the strings ensemble).

In the B section where the track goes into the parallel minor key, we have Montpellier as the main lead, and the higher background synth is an instance of Chicago (which is not just for basses ;) ). And the riser is Brussels.

Fun fact - the silent sidechain trigger track is actually Recife's CHat Detroit, not a kickdrum. I find that closed hihats are better for triggering sidechain ducking effects in EDM.

After rendering the track, I popped it into Cubasis 3 where I used my usual FX chain of MagicDeathEyeStereo into BarkFilter Tripleband into TB Barricade. And voila, we have a decent track.

  • Amazing track, mate...
Classic 90s House with crisper+better production
Sent me back to my partying days  :sunglasses:

  • Does what it says on the tin - cheesy happy little melody set to a 90s House groove.
    It's really well done.

Nice! Thanks mate. Always fun to return to the days of our youth. I grew up listening to these sounds and styles of House.

Here's a tip. Despite the IFX mixing limits in Gadget, I tend to do my final level adjustments into the default limiter (not Deemax). Something I learned to do from Ferry Corsten's FaderPro course. 😂 Somehow my mixes come out clearer and more precise that way.

Thank you so much. :) Yep, I've been feeling happy and energetic lately, so something cheesy and fun seemed to be the emotion I wanted to evoke in this track. Hard to produce Dark Ambient when feeling like this. But damn do I love listening to that.

  • Love it! Great track, great to smoke one to. Haha

Lol. Thanks mate. :) Much appreciated.

  • I admire your production skills. Always a lot of clarity.

  • This is really fun. Happy and bouncy. Never tried the Gadget stuff because I'm already suffering Gear Acquisition Syndrome and I'm afraid Gadget would only make it worse. This makes it all the more tempting. Great recording.

  • Hey @jwmmakerofmusic cool track, sounds great!

I agree about using short percussive sounds as a sidechain trigger. You can get a faster release from the comp this way. I also mix into a limiter Whether on iOS or desktop studio. I use it even when choosing sounds if I can get away with it.

Hey what In Gadget did you use for the record scratch into the B section?

Thank you so much. :) That means a lot coming from a legend like you mate. :)

Thank you so much. Oh yes, GAS is real when it comes to being a Korg completionist, lol, and it'll cost you a shitload of money (think $500+). That said, one can make decent tracks with what's there already. I think (correct me if I'm wrong) Recife comes free in Gadget already. The only synth I used in this track that is an IAP is Montpellier (iMono/Poly). Wolfsburg isn't as meaty as Montpellier, but you can get some decent sounds out of it.

And that's EXACTLY why I use a short closed hi-hat. I can control the release of the sidechain that much better. And mixing into a limiter is like using a pair of reading glasses. You don't need them all the time, but a limiter gives clarity to what you're doing. ^_^

That'll be Amsterdam. The sound is called "FX SD Rub". :)
