Using Polyphase with Pure Piano Issue

Hi all. When I use Polyphase with Pure Piano, after maybe 30 seconds Pure Piano stops receiving midi from Polyphase. I’m using these apps in AUM. I can see that Polyphase is still sending midi, but Pure Piano goes silent. I tried setting up four instances of ArpBud to send midi to Pure Piano and it worked fine indefinitely, which leads me to believe there’s some problem with Polyphase. Has anyone had this issue or have any advice? Thanks in advance!

Have you been able to replicate this with polyphase and other instruments?

  • I wonder if this is at all related.

No, all other instruments seem to work fine. Perhaps it’s a specific issue Polyphase has only when controlling Pure Piano.

Do you think that Pure Piano listening on all channels would cause such an issue?

  • So, I just tried setting Pure Piano to listen (in AUM) only on channels 1-4 to Polyphase—same result. However, when I tried having PP listen on just one channel it played for several minutes before it stopped getting midi. Then I turned off that channel and had it listen on another channel and had the same result—longer play time but still eventual stops responding. So, every time it stopped responding I just switched to another channel and it started playing again. Is this info helpful?

Yeah sounds like something odd in the specific combination of the two and how they send/receive midi.

Try AudioBus and see if you get the same result?

I'm 99 percent sure I know what this is. Polyphase uses a lot of sustain, unless you turn it off. This is very demanding on polyphony. Try increasing Pure Piano polyphony in Pure Piano's settings. That will almost certainly fix it. If not, try turning off the sustain in polyphase. If you watched my video on Polyphase, you will have seen that I had the same issue several times with Ravenscroft. By the way, when this happens, switching preset in the app is a quick and dirty fix, at least for a while, but obviously not a good one. Try max polyphony 👍

That’s a good idea. Unfortunately, I’m not used to working with Audiobus and I can’t figure out how to use it to set up Polyphase to feed midi to Pure Piano. Any tips?

  • Try max polyphony first, 99 percent certain that's the issue, I've encountered this many times when working with polyphase and various apps.

Do you mean max in the voices setting of Pure Piano or is there a max polyphony setting in Polyphase?

I tried setting Pure Piano’s voice setting to max with no improvement. How do I turn off sustain in Polyphase?

Yeah I meant max poly on pure piano. Hmm, I wonder if the piece you are playing has fast patterns with lots of notes? You turn off sustain in polyphase by deactivating the words 'sus' at the side of the screen. If that doesn't work, I have no idea, you would need to contact the devs

It seems that Pure Piano can handle sustain from Polyphase up to .5n indefinitely but can’t handle inf very long. Thank you Gavinski, and thank you for your excellent tutorial videos—they are my favorite iOS music related videos and have led to many happy purchases!

    Great to hear, thank you!

  • Just tried Pure Piano with Polyphase and sus on and it failed after about a minute. Turned sus off and no problem. Turned sus back on an it’s still playing. Weird
